Mine, because I finally got around to watching it this weekend, Hamilton is all that great.(though I do have the dadadaaadadaaa chorus from the king’s song in my head)
So come on, those sacred cows of film and tv, why don’t you like them?
Oh yeah, the Beatles. The Kinks were better.

Most musicals are utter shite

In general, they have one or two big, catchy (still often very irritating) songs that everybody remembers and then fill out the rest with utterly forgettable filler dross. You could maybe forgive poor dialogue, as its purpose is only really to link and lead into the songs; but then, if the songs are meant to be the showpiece of the whole thing, why are almost all of them so terribly meh?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 13/10/2020 10:59

Nonsense verse isn't an amazingly astute art form that takes a huge amount of talent to pull off - it's just somebody who can't (or can't be bothered to) skilfully mold and weave real words and so is totally blagging it.

"On the Ning Nang Nong/Where the Cows go Bong!/and the monkeys all say BOO!/There's a Nong Nang Ning/Where the trees go Ping!/And the tea pots jibber jabber joo."

"Twas brillig, and the slithy toves. Did gyre and gimble in the wabe; All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe." (that one doesn't even scan properly)

It's what the Emperor sits listening to and howling at whilst wearing his lovely new clothes.

Downunderduchess · 13/10/2020 11:31

Fleabag? More like shitbag. I don’t understand all the praise it gets. I watched it thinking it was going to be amazing. It wasn’t.

Mrsjayy · 13/10/2020 11:48

I hated flea bag and controversially Pheobe Waller Bridge isn't a favourite of mine either.

IrmaFayLear · 13/10/2020 11:52

The Greatest Showman... The Worst Thing Evaaaaaah.

Glossed over his womanising, glossed over animals in circus - both modern no nos, yes? But... love yourself ! This is me!! (And I don’t understand why, if the bearded lady was unhappy about being bearded, she couldn’t have just used a razor... )

The Greatest Crap.

Kernowgal · 13/10/2020 12:02

I'm not ashamed to say that I love Mrs Brown's Boys.

But pretty much everything else you've all said - yep.

I'll also add: the plethora of panel game shows popping up featuring the same tired old comedians trotting out the same tired old shit, usually on Dave. Notable exceptions include Taskmaster and Richard Osman's House of Games.

BabyItsAWildWorld · 13/10/2020 12:03

Russell Brand is very intelligent and interesting.

Jeremy Clarkson is funny.

fantasmasgoria1 · 13/10/2020 12:03

I'm in agreement with 80% of what's been said here. However I think queen were very good and Freddie was an awesome showman, nirvana were not that bad, loki was better looking than thor, and Tom Hardy isn't a bad looking man!

TheSeedsOfADream · 13/10/2020 12:13

Now I am a huge musical fan, and a huge Abba fan and have never got beyond the first 15 minutes of Mamma Mia. Just embarrassing shit.

Brad Pitt is an average actor who looks like a hamster.
Russell Crowd is a below average actor who looks like a potato.
Matt Smith looks like if you walked behind him he'd turn out to be one of those cardboard policemen they put in the poundshop.
Benedict Cumberbatch has a clammy handshake and smells faintly of cheese.

Friends was just ridiculous. I shared a flat in 1994 with someone who knew it by heart and I was wtf? Canned laughter, opening and shutting doors. Dreadful actors missing their cue. Urgh.

I agree about Russell Brand. He's a twatz but fuck me he's clever. And right.

This also Itv2 panel shows with Joel Dommet and scarlett Moffat I saw a "celeb" karaoke advertised with the pair of them

powershowerforanhour · 13/10/2020 15:29

Eva Cassidy's changing of the phrasing on "Fields of Gold" and "Over the Rainbow" sounds like it was just done for the sake of it. Neither song is improved by it, it jars and I suspect she only did it to have a more distinctive individual style- just ended up sounding like a bit of a schticky exercise in brand marketing. Both songs sung straight would have sounded better, she did have a good voice.

victoria0132 · 13/10/2020 15:31

Friday Night Dinner is the worst thing on TV

GrannyWeatherwaxsBroomstick · 13/10/2020 17:35

The Walking Dead is crap. DH told me how amazing it was, so after about 20 minutes into episode 1, I had to know one thing:
There’s been a zombie apocalypse?
Right
Every one not dead is hiding?
Right
So who has been mowing the lawns?
I’m not watching tv with you anymore 😂

At least I don’t have to watch the Walking Dead again

TheVanguardSix · 13/10/2020 18:13

Love Actually is just horrific.

Ryan Reynolds makes my teeth itch. He's ALL shtick!

I can't watch Helen Mirren.

Panel shows. For the love of God, panel shows. They're like a Live at the Apollo graveyard. Though I do love Cats Does Countdown. I'll admit that in a whisper.

Mrsjayy · 13/10/2020 18:16

Nooo I love Ryan Reynolds this thread has just crossed the line Grin

TheVanguardSix · 13/10/2020 18:16

Oh yes, Russell Brand and Rupert Everett. I read both their memoirs years ago and was just 'sold'. Russell Brand is insanely clever. Rupert Everett should be a national treasure. He is a fabulous writer!

TheVanguardSix · 13/10/2020 18:19

I'm sorry. I knew that one would hurt. I was apprehensive about writing what I did about him! Grin

Mrsjayy · 13/10/2020 18:20

@TheVanguardSix. Rupert Everett has a new. Book out.

Mrsjayy · 13/10/2020 18:21

It's finnee we are all friends here Grin

Redcrayons · 13/10/2020 18:22

All American tv series go on too long.
Parks and rec didn’t need the last season
The office should have finished when Michael left
Modern family was terrible once the kids grew up
24 one season was enough
Friends went on too long
Breaking Bad was great till they involved the chicken bloke
Currently watching Season 3 of Ozark and I’m thinking it’s done.

confusedofengland · 13/10/2020 18:24

Watching The Greatest Showman was a complete waste of a couple of hours of my life.

I have never read & never intend to read any Harry Potter. Or watch them.

I have never seen Frozen & am glad.

Strictly is also utter tosh.

SoPanny · 14/10/2020 20:13

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

Monty Python is not funny. Just smug, patronising posh boys amusing themselves.

You only think that because you aren't intelligent and educated enough to understand just how hilarious it actually is. In the same way that, if you don't recognise a banana gaffer taped to a wall as the very pinnacle of artistic brilliance, it's because you're just not smart enough to 'get' art.... Grin

I completely agree with you: they had the odd good sketch, but their miss-rate was sky high. I detest 'Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life' an can't stop myself silently cringeing when it comes on at a funeral. See also 'My Way' (as per my previous comment).

If we're honest, most people only really like it because it contains a rude word (unless it's the bowdlerised version, in which case they just drown it out anyway), which will be shouted by everybody singing along at the top of their voices and grinning like 3yos who've just discovered the word 'poo'; the same as when that Chubby Brown version of 'Living Next Door To Alice' comes on.

I don’t think I’ve ever given a post on MN an actual standing ovation but here you go
TheOrchidKiller · 14/10/2020 20:33

I don't get the hype about Coldplay. Yeah, they bang out a decent tune but Chris Martin can't sing.

What do Ant & Dec do to win so many awards?

TheOrchidKiller · 14/10/2020 20:46

Also, I hate The Sound of Music, always have done. No family is that squeaky clean.

SunbeamShadow · 15/10/2020 00:11

My most hated TV show is, without exception, Mrs Brown's Boys.

I loathe John Lennon and that bloody Imagine song! Even more so because people hold him up as some kind of bloody paragon.

I don't find The Inbetweeners or The Office funny, or even mildly amusing
