Is there anything you want, could afford, but won’t buy?

I love Jellycat products, and spend way too long looking at websites selling them, and Facebook pages where people show their collections. My favourite sections are Ocean Life and Fresh and Foodie. I could afford to buy myself one every month (and ask for them for birthdays, Christmas etc),and I would adore them and they’d make me happy

But I don’t. I’ve got two, both presents. A really old cat and a conker.

I really want more but I can’t because I know I’d get obsessed, and I can’t risk it. My daughter was given one beanie baby when she was born in 1998, and suddenly I’d bought over 300 and had them stashed in suitcases until I gave them away. I can’t go there again - don’t have the money or the space.

I just wondered if anyone else had anything similar?

I’ve had my eye on a Prada bag for a while now. I can afford it but I feel sick when I think about spending that much money on a bag. I’ve decided I might buy it as a gift to myself when I buy my first property next year but we’ll see if I’m brave enough to actually do it

Overpriced Turkish delight from the posh deli. It is delicious, but stupidly expensive and not a good habit to get into!

fitzbilly · 11/10/2020 14:32

A holiday abroad.

Really good single malt whiskey. Because it's want to drink too much of it!

bellinique · 11/10/2020 14:35

Champagne every weekend. I love it and I could afford it but it just seems too decadent for something that ultimately ends up down the loo.

JoJoSM2 · 11/10/2020 14:45

I occasionally end up buying some things that I consider a bit ridiculous and overpriced but can feel a bit guilty over spending the money even though the purchase doesn’t comprise my pension or living expenses etc.

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 11/10/2020 14:58

A Hotel Chocolat Velvetiser. £100, it just makes hot chocolates, which I rarely drink... but ohhh it's a shiny lovely gadget 😂

TinkersRucksack · 11/10/2020 14:59

A Pucci scarf. I spend hours on EBay looking at second hand ones.

Livedandlearned · 11/10/2020 15:00

An IPL. It just seems so expensive and has mixed reviews.

This was my first thought too! I could afford one, but it just seems... extravagant (and not in a good way!)

What's an IPL?
burglarbettybaby · 11/10/2020 15:26

IPL is a laser hair removal device
I tend to buy what I like within reason. But i am sensible.

VictoriaBun · 11/10/2020 15:27

A brand new car , can't see the point.

Oh no you must buy one, absolute game changer!
CatsArePeopleToo · 11/10/2020 15:29

An iPhone. A reason why not - I lose my phones or they get stolen. It's less grief when it's a cheap one.

Livedandlearned · 11/10/2020 15:31

@IncludeWomenInTheSequel nooooooo don't start me off again, I want one but what if it doesn't work on me?!?!

Floralnomad · 11/10/2020 15:37

A horse , I spend more on riding lessons than it would cost me to keep my own ( we have a retired pony) but I don’t want the commitment and I like the variety of riding a few different ones .

Lots of little things I’m not very good at just treating myself. I see something I’d quite like like a Woodwick candle 20 quid will last ages but you know food and kids stuff comes first so I put it down.
Quite sad really but I suppose it’s prioritising. I often lust after a glossy mag but again think 4 quid and put myself off.
I could afford these bits and bobs but they do add up. I wonder if I should allow myself one random item a month guilt free.

Oneofeachclub · 11/10/2020 15:44

FedUpWithBriiiiick and OrigamiOwl the velvetiser has £15 off at the moment FREEVEL15 is the code I think

Worth every Penny if you have dark hair. Wish I'd got mine when I was late teens.

Seriously. If you have dark hair it will work. In the summer I have pretty dark olive skin and the combo still works. Brilliant gadget.

Livedandlearned · 11/10/2020 16:03

I do have dark hair. Which brand do you have?

I give you full permission to buy yourself at least one treat per month. No guilt allowed.

I've always wanted a sports car thats from the late 80s, I've loved it since I was a teenager and I could afford to buy one. But I can't for the life of me work out when I'd drive it 😂

Thing is they are going up in value and I'm still dithering 🙈

I want 30 of these for my shoes and cashmere jumpers but it seems ridiculously extravagant...... What is wrong with me!!!

RWK29 · 11/10/2020 16:15

An Apple Watch 😅 I look at them constantly and could buy myself one but we’re expecting our first baby and I keep telling myself I should be sensible and that money should be saved for a rainy day 🙈😂
