Is there anything you want, could afford, but won’t buy?

I love Jellycat products, and spend way too long looking at websites selling them, and Facebook pages where people show their collections. My favourite sections are Ocean Life and Fresh and Foodie. I could afford to buy myself one every month (and ask for them for birthdays, Christmas etc),and I would adore them and they’d make me happy

But I don’t. I’ve got two, both presents. A really old cat and a conker.

I really want more but I can’t because I know I’d get obsessed, and I can’t risk it. My daughter was given one beanie baby when she was born in 1998, and suddenly I’d bought over 300 and had them stashed in suitcases until I gave them away. I can’t go there again - don’t have the money or the space.

I just wondered if anyone else had anything similar?

A Nissan Figaro. I love them so much and they’re not expensive. But I know nothing about car maintenance, which is kind of essential with a thirty year old car. So instead I look at pictures of them on a fan page on Facebook, and pretend that if a perfect one came up for sale that had low mileage and was completely pristine I would treat myself. But I probably wouldn’t. Sad

I do have a Velvetiser though! It was worth every penny. I use it all the time.

Oh God, so many things!
I am so inhibited when it comes to buying things for myself.
I can only have justify it, if it's to replace something that's worn out.
Otherwise it just makes me feel anxious and awful.

Fullof · 11/10/2020 20:26

@ruthieness

Good idea to get 10 a month for a few months! It seems very different to spend £20 not £60!
It makes it a lot more manageable
BrassicaBabe · 11/10/2020 20:47

@Isitactuallyme

A robot lawnmower and a robot hoover. Would love them but just can't justify it.
Do the robot mower! Best money we ever spent. Ever. EV-ER!
ShinyGreenElephant · 11/10/2020 20:57

A coffee machine. I have it in the basket every payday then talk myself out of it and buy the kids stuff instead

Kidneybingo · 11/10/2020 21:04

Absolutely loads of things. I talk myself out of most purchases. I just end up thinking of the consumption, and the resources, and how I can manage without.

AlwaysLatte · 11/10/2020 21:06

Lots of things but to be honest I really like having space and less clutter so I stick to things I really need - then I buy them.

Oryxx · 11/10/2020 21:13

Loads of things. I find it difficult to justify spending money on myself ‘just because’.

although I could afford it, I don’t have a posh coffee machine in my kitchen and I probably never will have. I know I would use it and it would make me happy to have a delicious coffee every morning before work. But then I think that it money I could spend on my kids so I don’t...

HairyToity · 11/10/2020 21:34

We like an occasional treat, to lift the spirits, so we have a posh coffee machine. No regrets on this one.

The last house owners put in a new kitchen, which is 20 years old, and looking dated. We could afford to change it, but it's still in good condition, and seems wasteful. Also whilst we could afford it, our savings would take a dent. Plus the hassle.

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie

£1700 for a phone?! Is it made of diamonds?

How much do you think diamonds cost? Wink

JonHammIsMyJamm · 11/10/2020 21:49

@Livedandlearned

An IPL. It just seems so expensive and has mixed reviews.
I absolutely love mine. If you’ve got fair skin and darkish hair, it’s absolutely fab.
burntpinky · 11/10/2020 21:52

a new car. but I just can't get over how wasteful it is so I don't bother.

Another one wanting a velvetiser but can't help thinking it's just another gadget that will get pushed to back of a cupboard after a few outings so never do!!!

Some Cornish honey gin (divine with ginger beer) but delivery is ridiculous so then I end up putting another 3 bottles of other gin in my basket so it's "worth" the delivery. Not yet gone through with the payment.

We rarely buy stuff for ourselves - not cos we can't afford it but we just don't. However, we do spend ridiculous amounts on food (supermarket and eating out)

JonHammIsMyJamm · 11/10/2020 21:53

@LadySlipper

Some Sweaty Betty leggings. I want them, can afford them, refuse to pay that ridiculous price for leggings though.
Me too. I keep going on the website and adding a pair to my basket and then clicking off before checkout. It’s just crazy money.
motorcyclenumptiness · 11/10/2020 21:54

Sweaty Betty joggers. So lovely but £70! For joggers! The guilt would suck all the fun out of wearing them so not going to happen Sad

weegiemum · 11/10/2020 22:02

More fancy Converse.

I'm disabled and have problems with nerve damage in my feet and with my balance, and Converse low tops are the one shoe that I always know fits.

I have them in black, navy, red and metallic blue. For someone who doesn't go out much that is plenty? Right?

MrsMime · 11/10/2020 22:02

A Bellicon rebounder. I want one so much but it is so expensive!

notheragain4 · 11/10/2020 22:04

An SUV, I think they look great, could afford one, but deep down know they're gauche and unnecessary so won't succumb to it.

Stillfunny · 11/10/2020 22:10

I would love a robot Hoover that vacuums and mops. Have shiny white tiles and a black coated dog.
But I have a Dyson that cost £350 and works well. I just don't want to do it as often as it needs to be done

Cactuslockdown · 11/10/2020 22:13

One of those fancy kitchenaid mixers.... so pretty... so expensive Confused

Whattodo121 · 11/10/2020 22:33

One of those fancy kitchenaid mixers.... so pretty... so expensive A lovely friend Knew I wanted one of these and sent me a discount code she got through via her work and I got 25% off! I have had it since May and use it at least three times a week. I also shared the discount code with another friend and she got one too and we now just send each other random pictures of cinammon buns and cupcakes 😂 it was expensive even with the discount but it is the best thing ever.

lljkk · 11/10/2020 22:43

Everything. I'm pretty anorexic with money.

Iamthewombat · 11/10/2020 22:56

I have broken my nose three times in my 49 years and it was not that great to begin with. I could afford a nose job. I don’t know why I haven’t done it. It’s not the money.

I think I’d feel a bit pathetic and vain, which is odd because my behaviour is often pathetic and I am certainly vain! Also, I’m a bit worried about ending up like La Toya bloody Jackson. And I’d have to explain to work colleagues that I’d had a nose job and they would want to know why and blah blah I can’t be bothered.

Love that Fred Perry/Raf Simons parka by the way.

I almost bought a figaro 13 years ago when I lived in the Uk. Probably a good job I didn’t as I moved overseas and I would have had to sell it Sad. I did see one here in Texas a couple of weeks ago, it still had the RH drive and he’d put a little luggage rack on the boot. Would still love one but H would have to stay home as we couldn’t all fit in it
JuiceyBetty · 11/10/2020 23:16

I’m another one who wants a velvetiser! I’m hoping for a Black Friday special price.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 11/10/2020 23:23

RE the velvetiser - it is totally wonderful!! So well made. Get one! My lovely auntie sent me one for my birthday which was such a nice surprise. I didn’t even know they existed, it was the start of lockdown and it really cheered me up. And the DCs love a frothy milk, so it’s used most days, and hot chocolate from it is delightful
