Is there anything you want, could afford, but won’t buy?

I love Jellycat products, and spend way too long looking at websites selling them, and Facebook pages where people show their collections. My favourite sections are Ocean Life and Fresh and Foodie. I could afford to buy myself one every month (and ask for them for birthdays, Christmas etc),and I would adore them and they’d make me happy

But I don’t. I’ve got two, both presents. A really old cat and a conker.

I really want more but I can’t because I know I’d get obsessed, and I can’t risk it. My daughter was given one beanie baby when she was born in 1998, and suddenly I’d bought over 300 and had them stashed in suitcases until I gave them away. I can’t go there again - don’t have the money or the space.

I just wondered if anyone else had anything similar?

I'm the same as a pp, I have spare money but never buy myself anything, I think it's not needed and don't bother. The last treat I bought myself was a discounted pair of gap jeans and I still haven't had a reason the wear them.

I can't bring myself to get the kitchen re-done.

We can afford it but the current one is still perfectly functional albeit a but tatty now.

Silly really because a new kitchen might actually make me want to cook it won't and bring me joy.

Eckhart · 11/10/2020 16:19

Ten McDonald's milkshakes a day. I'm reasonably health conscious and don't like the McDonald's ethos, so I never go in. But I used to have a chocolate milkshake every day when I was 17 and hadn't learned to care about anything. I love them. I could drink a bucket full.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/10/2020 16:23

A new kitchen here too. Just the idea of having to make a decision about it terrifies me, let alone having to cope with it being fitted.

But I’ve never had anything designer as I’m clumsy and spill everything on my clothes so I don’t dare buy it. I look at it every day.

Isitactuallyme · 11/10/2020 16:27

A robot lawnmower and a robot hoover. Would love them but just can't justify it.

BlueJava · 11/10/2020 16:29

A car. I've just stuck with my 12 yo car because whilst I'd like a nice, shiny, new car I also like the fact that I can sling anything in the current one and don't really have to worry about it! So it can take the muddy dog, stuff for a recycling centre run, plants from my dad - anything - and I don't need to worry much. I also worry that if I buy now and it's not electric it could really go down in value, but charging is a problem for electric.

LaVitaPuoEsserePiuBella · 11/10/2020 16:30

Molton Brown ylang ylang shower gel

dorispiffle · 11/10/2020 16:30

A loo brush

(Because they're unnecessary)

JessicaPeach · 11/10/2020 16:35

I'm hankering after a cricut machine to make little vinyl labels but they are £179 and I don't think they are worth it. I google them all the time looking for a cheap knock off version that I think is worth the price instead!

Meruem · 11/10/2020 16:44

A Samsung Fold. I thought it looked intriguing until I saw it was £1700! I just could never bring myself to spend nearly 2k on a phone. Also one of the big things I use my current phone for is reading when on the tube etc and doing that on a 2k phone is asking to be mugged!

NewAndImprovedNorks · 11/10/2020 16:49

New slippers.
I have some Birkenstock suede slippers, but the tops flop down when I take them off, and I can’t just slip my feet into them, I have to BEND DOWN to put them in (can you IMAGINE the hardship?) They are annoying twice a day minimum.

BUT they were expensive and still refuse to wear out so I cannot bear to buy different NON flopsy ones.

Meanwhile today in the garden centre I happily pottered about spending twice as much on plants and pots and bulbs.

ilovebagpuss · 11/10/2020 16:55

@TwentyViginti thanks Grin I will think of your words when I buy a glossy Christmas magazine just because it will make me happy.

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 11/10/2020 16:56

More tattoos. A custom tattoo by a really good artist is pricey and I can't justify it to myself.

Shoxfordian · 11/10/2020 17:01

I want an aspinal handbag but they're 600 squid and I don't even go into the office to use it anymore

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/10/2020 17:08

£1700 for a phone?! Is it made of diamonds?

Wheelerdeeler · 11/10/2020 18:23

2 things

Since I'm wfh , I've debated getting a bean to cup coffee machine. I even had vouchers. But I just can't justify it.

Designer sunglasses. But I always buy primark as I always lise them or sit on them etc.

coronafiona · 11/10/2020 18:25

White company stuff. Beautiful but can not justify that amount of money for a candle. Or a jumper!

MiddleClassProblem · 11/10/2020 18:27

Another puppy

LadySlipper · 11/10/2020 18:28

Some Sweaty Betty leggings. I want them, can afford them, refuse to pay that ridiculous price for leggings though.

Daisyplace · 11/10/2020 18:29

Boob job! Just feels waaaaay too selfish !

I want 30 of these for my shoes and cashmere jumpers but it seems ridiculously extravagant...... What is wrong with me!!!

Buy yourself 10 a month over 3 months and it won’t seem as bad. I was the same with slightly different boxes and I’m glad I did. It was my pay day treat for 3 months . Looks fantastic
AgeLikeWine · 11/10/2020 18:54

Subscriptions to BT Sport & Netflix.

I’m a big sports fan, so I already subscribe to Sky for the cricket, F1, football etc. I would like to be able to watch the Champions League and Rugby as well, and I’m told there is loads of good stuff on Netflix but I have a limited amount of free time and I simply can’t justify more subscriptions, despite being able to afford them.

MaudesMum · 11/10/2020 19:07

My problem is always with "could afford". My income goes up and down (freelance), I have savings but at my age (59) and because of the freelance thing I'm not putting much into these. So, with big purchases I always need to have this conversation with myself about can I afford them out of my income, is there enough in the bank to pay my next tax bill, is it important enough to justify taking money out of the savings? It takes all of the fun out of it.

ruthieness · 11/10/2020 19:15

Good idea to get 10 a month for a few months! It seems very different to spend £20 not £60!
