Tattoos on hands - trashy or ok?

So long story short. I broke my wrist and will be needing a surgery. Will end up with a visible scar. I started contemplating getting a tattoo to cover it up. Please tell me - good idea or a bad idea?

CatsArePeopleToo, If you are considering a tattoo only for fear of what you think the scar would look like, I really wouldn't worry. Many of us have scars for various reasons and they're fine, as PP says, a 'roadmap' of life.

Good luck with your surgery. Thanks

Scars are tattoos with better stories 😁

If you want a tattoo then go for it, but I wouldn't get one just to hide a scar.

I'm surprised as well at the unpleasantness when op is worried about an operation and the subsequent scarring.

Some women have nipples tattooed after breast reconstruction, presumably they'd be in for all this shit as well.

So nasty.

I don’t think you’ll get many positive opinions on it from here op - most of mumsnet seem to hate tattoos.
That aside, I love tattoos and I really love hand tattoos but I don’t think you should go for it, at least without thinking about it a lot more first. Partly because a scar is nothing to be ashamed of but also because going from no tattoos to a hand tattoo that can’t be hidden is quite a big jump. That’s not to say you wouldn’t end up loving it but it’s a big step. I have quite a few including sleeve but I’m still undecided on my hands because, much as I love them, lots of peoples attitude to tattoos hasn’t quite caught up yet - as evidenced by the replies here Wink

Why are tattoos trashy? What makes them so?

I have plenty.

Personally I find fake tan, whitened teeth, fake eyebrows far worse.

My favourite tattoo. There's only one, bespoke artists drawing of my wedding buckle on the belt of my wedding dress. Trashy?

PickAChew · 20/09/2020 23:44

Did someone really compare a (temporary) haircut with a (permanent) tattoo.

A scar is a scar. Most look pretty neat or even inconspicuous, after a few years. They all have an interesting story behind them.

Definitely make sure you choose one you love and be 100% sure. I have full sleeves along with hand and neck tattoos, nobody IRL has ever judged me by them.

Ilovesausages · 21/09/2020 00:03

I’m so surprised by all the judgement on this thread.

I sometimes feel like I’m the only person I know without a tattoo!

I'm a tattooist, and recently I tattooed over quite a large scar, with something very delicate and meaningful. We both were really pleased with it, and it was a lovely, healing experience. That said the very fact that you've posed this question on here suggests that your not ready yet, and maybe never will be, please live with your scar for a while.
People either 'get' the tattoo thing, or they don't. It's like marmite, but at the end of the day it's your body and you're the one who's going to wear it for the rest of your life.
This article is a good read for those who hold the belief that this form of art is only for the undereducated, underclass -
