Tattoos on hands - trashy or ok?

So long story short. I broke my wrist and will be needing a surgery. Will end up with a visible scar. I started contemplating getting a tattoo to cover it up. Please tell me - good idea or a bad idea?

I work as a journalist for a large public broadcaster (yes, that one) I have a full sleeve, a small finger tattoo and a couple of nose piercings. I’ve never been judged, asked to cover up or turned down for jobs because of them. In fact I get complimented on them frequently. In my experience they’re so commonplace now that nobody bats an eyelid - I’m sure some people do judge but it’s not something I’ve experienced. Perhaps I just work and exist in liberal media circles.

SOME tattoos can look bad, but certainly in professional circles in London they don’t make a jot of difference

SBTLove · 12/09/2020 13:25

For all the nasty ppl judging tattoos as common, trashy, uneducated etc
How will you feel if your child grows up and gets one? will you think they’re trash?
Do you judge ppl on their clothing? where they live? the colour of their face?
It’s divisive and disgusting that in 2020 we have all these ppl sneering at others for a bloody tattoo.
What about the footballers and pop stars your DC idolise do you tell them these ppl are trash? worth millions and talented are trash?
Would you refuse treatment from a nurse with tattoos? the police officer helping you? the firefighter saving your house?
It’s ok for them to be of service to you but in your head they are trash, common, uneducated?
I’d like to know how wonderful you all are to feel you can look down on anyone.
Prejudice is strong on MN and it only becomes something of the past if all
you stick up bints stop perpetuating your nasty outdated attitudes.

It was the OP who asked if they were trashy or ok. Of the two choices people opted for trashy - using the OPs words - and some opted for OK.

I hope your operation goes well. Why don’t you do as lots of PP have said and get a variety of bracelets to cover the scar and see how it looks as it heals before doing anything further.

Heffalooomia · 12/09/2020 13:38

I like tattooed hands but still it's an extreme look in most people's eyes 👀

SBTLove · 12/09/2020 13:54

@donnadenise
Have you even rtft? the attitudes on here are disgusting.

Pinkyandthebrainz · 12/09/2020 14:11

Awful and chavvy

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 12/09/2020 14:26

Your body, no one else's business. No shame in a scar or a tattoo (unless it's a swastika or similar) MN is very pearl clutchy about tattoos, probably best to join a few fb tattoo groups and have a look for a reputable tattoo artist who has lots of experience covering scar tissue as PPs have stated its not straight foward procedure. Good luck whatever you choose Flowers

Beyond ironic that the judgy posters on here seem to think having tattoos makes other people flawed.

Everysinglebloodytime · 12/09/2020 14:45

I gave up reading after a while, as you can see by the thread, some people will judge you. However, in my view, people who judge people with tattoos as being beneath them are knobheads whose views demonstrate the complete opposite is true.

So, if you don't want to be judged at all, don't do it. If you couldn't give a shit what knobheads think and you want one, go for it!

TheEmpressOfUtterBastardry · 12/09/2020 14:52

Doesn't Tulisa have "LUCKY YOU" tattooed just above her mons veneris? I'm pretty sure I'm right.

Now that really is trashy Grin

Bargebill19 · 12/09/2020 17:15

@donnadenise

For some people you aren’t allowed to read the question and answer it according to the OPs wishes. It is wrong in some people’s eyes to do that’s. Only opinions that agree with their own point of view will do, their world has no individual thought, consideration, reflection on personal circumstances or grey areas. A very narrow, dangerous dark place indeed.

NewAutumnName · 12/09/2020 17:24

Imo trashy.
Ultimately up to you and what you think

NewAutumnName · 12/09/2020 17:27

The OP .....ASKED for opinions....asked if trashy or not....

Therefore people reply with their own opinions.....

Along come people getting upset because some people don't like them.....strange ConfusedShock

dixiedo · 12/09/2020 18:03

I had one on the side of my wrist when I was about 18.
I actually like tattoos on some people but this one I feel is tacky. I hate it so much I've contemplated having it cut out... I try and wear long sleeves or cover it with jewellery if I'm going anywhere nice ☹️

Ginfordinner · 12/09/2020 18:04

@WingBingo

I have a tattoo on the side of my hand.

I’m a professional and it’s never been a problem as far as I know. No idea if people are making silent judgements.

I like it and it’s never faded.

It looks quite smudged. Is it several years old?
mineofuselessinformation · 12/09/2020 18:11

Dixiedo, a lot of tattoo parlours also offer laser removal.
Would that be worth looking into?

Yes, I have and they are but you can't blame the posters for using the word trashy when it was what the op asked.

SBTLove · 12/09/2020 18:17

@donnadenise
I think it went beyond that with the nastiness, uneducated, common to name a few and various ill informed ramblings about how low life’s have them and it will affect your life 😡

garlictwist · 12/09/2020 18:30

All tattoos look shit in my opinion

WingBingo · 12/09/2020 18:31

@Ginfordinner it may be the quality of the photo. Looks ok I think.

That's what Mumsnet is like these days.

mineofuselessinformation · 12/09/2020 18:57

SBTlove I agree - and am surprised because I honestly thought that our society had now moved past that, and had learned to accept people for who they are, regardless of what they look like - tattooed or not. It seems I'm wrong, on here at the very least.
Or maybe not, because I've just remembered when I went on a cruise as a single person and so was seated on a table in the restaurant with other people. One of the other guests could not let go of the fact that I work in a very 'professional' role, but had a small tattoo on my wrist - pic attached with watch strap for an idea of size. They'd have been horrified if they saw my most recent! (Also attached).
I don't give a shiny shit if people consider me to be from some kind of underclass. My tattoos are now part of me and I'm proud of them - they each mark a part of my life's journey.

Oops! Lost the first picture...

Tattoos on hands - trashy or ok?
SimonJT · 12/09/2020 19:26

The tattoo in the picture is kind of similar to mine, mine is less dense and not as ‘dark’ and more typically british trees and there is a little hidden deer. It covers my whole arm, left ‘boob’ and part of my left hand. I also have a crown tattoo on my ring finger and a tattoo behind my ear, so a few visible ones.

I often have my forearms on show at work, I have a professional job, I have also been a leader speaker representing my employer at large industry conferences. My tattoos have never been a problem at all.

I have quite a few tattoos, some are getting on a bit, I have uses good artists and none of my tattoos have any ‘bleeding’ etc and all remain very crisp.

jessstan2, Must you be so contemptuous? Your posts to Icannotcook and to audreyand are particularly snide. I don't like tattoos myself but there's no need for that.

I looked to see the poster's name when I read the first one and wasn't surprised to see that it was you.
