Tattoos on hands - trashy or ok?

CatsArePeopleToo · 11/09/2020 19:29

So long story short. I broke my wrist and will be needing a surgery. Will end up with a visible scar. I started contemplating getting a tattoo to cover it up. Please tell me - good idea or a bad idea?

My cousin is a police officer and has full sleeve tattoos on his arms.... no problems there whatsoever

AgeLikeWine · 11/09/2020 20:41

If you’re 100% confident that having a tattoo you can’t easily cover when you’re at work will not be an issue for your current employer or for any potential future employer, go for it.

If you think it could potentially be an issue, it’s probably not a good idea.

SBTLove · 11/09/2020 20:42

All the judgemental snobs, will they be calling nurses, doctors, police, fire service trashy when they help them or save their life?
This is why judging someone by their appearance is so very wrong.

I have one on the side of my hand, couldn't care less if it's "trashy" 🙄
I like it... my body my choice
Do what ever feels right for you OP

bowchicawowwow · 11/09/2020 20:46

I'm not a fan of tattoos and they look awful when they blur and fade (like mine has - major tattoo regret 24yrs later) I think hands and wrists would blur and fade even quicker?

Legoandloldolls · 11/09/2020 20:52
@Legoandloldolls
They aren’t actually that painful 😉
My friend who has a lovely tattoo going from her wrist onto her palm told me the same. I just presumed she lied to me. I could pass out just thinking it (watched my dh have a tattoo once, didnt look like fun to me 🤣)

I'm a wimp so I salute you

anxietrist · 11/09/2020 21:04

Dear God, the sheer snobbery on here about tattoos!
They are not trashy if carefully thought out and done by a good artist.
Work environments are changing and varied; my son in law has his own consultancy business plus lots of tattoos and is very highly regarded in his industry, tattoos don’t affect your ability or professionalism.
The snotty judgemental attitudes on this forum I have seen today is like something from the 1950s.

Agree! I'd swerve all of you over any person with tattoos 🙄

Do it OP & then stick a tattooed middle finger up any joules wearing snob who judges you

Icannotcook · 11/09/2020 21:09

I work in an office and have a large one on my arm and hand. Never had no problems professionally and I love them!

I'm not surprised, your second paragraph gives us a clear picture of your working environment."

What an absolute tosser you sound.

BrokenNotDead · 11/09/2020 21:11

It's YOUR body to customise how YOU want!! I get that scars tell a story of a life you've lived but so can tattoos, mine do. I have a stickman jumping on a trampoline on my hand and a very meaningful word on my thumb. I have never been looked down on for any of my tattoos (they're scattered round and pretty easy to cover with normal clothes). My kids can't wait to customise themselves either with hair colour, tattoos and piercings

NiceGerbil · 11/09/2020 21:16

Hello op

If you've not got any tattoos then being pushed into one in a place you probably wouldn't have chosen to have one if not for this is a bad idea.

You say you are worried about surgery. That's not surprising. You don't need to decide about tattoos now, I imagine you're focusing on it as it's something you can control.

The skin will need time to heal. You can see how you feel about the scar after. There are options for reducing appearance of scars I believe if it's bad.

Fwiw I had a lot of surgery as a child and have very large scars where they can be seen if I wear certain clothes. I like them, in a way. They're part of me. And they really fade with time. Having some types of scarring is not so bad.

Good luck with the op and see how you feel after you've got it out of the way and healed.

KilljoysDutch · 11/09/2020 21:17

If you want to decorate your skin then do it, you're the only person living in your body.

A Great quote I read once "My body is a temple and I am the deity it is dedicated to, do not think to tell me how I may decorate my altar" Do what makes you happy. If other people are judging something that doesn't affect them in any way then it just says so much more about how trashy they are then you.

pilates · 11/09/2020 21:18

Bad

LilyLongJohn · 11/09/2020 21:19

You will get judged. It's not right, but it will happen

It'll also look great for a while, whilst your young and can carry it off. Will look awful later in life and it's not something you can hide.

My back is heavily tattoo'd, imo I think it looked great when I was in my 20s, slim and had an edgy look, looks a bit silly now when I'm sat in the beach with my two dc's, I'm grey and overweight, plus I'm now pushing 50. I don't give a toss tho, but I can hide it. You can't do that with a hand tattoo

SimonJT · 11/09/2020 21:21

If you tattoo over a scar you may have quite a wait as the skin needs to be fully settled.

I have multiple tattoos, some visible when I’m wearing a suit at work, some not, I have a professional job and they have never been a problem. I also have a facial piercing that has never been a problem.

My sons audiologist has visible tattoos, she also has a stretch in one of her ears, I can’t remember which one.

Lollyneenah · 11/09/2020 21:22

Go for it OP! It sounds like you'll deserve something nice after a nasty op Wine
I'd love a henna type tattoo on the back of my hand and over my fingers

bellinisurge · 11/09/2020 21:22

Your hands age very badly and no amount of hand cream fixes it. A tattoo would look wrinkly pretty quickly.

Ughmaybenot · 11/09/2020 21:28

I don’t believe tattoos are inherently trashy, by any means. I have four, two mostly visible (inside of one wrist and back of one ankle) and they’ve never led me to be judged or held me back in any way at all... I’m reasonably successful as a human Grin
Anecdotally I used to date someone who was covered in tattoos, only his face, feet and... well, one other area wasn’t tattooed, and he was regional manager for a decent company, and great at his job too. People are getting less and less judgemental and shortsighted re tattoos all the time, I think.
The main issue though, for me, is that you wouldn’t have actually chosen to get a tattoo in that location, were it not for your operation and potential scar. Equally, you’ll be looking for a design to fit around said scar rather than a design you love and chose freely. Tattoos are a big commitment, they’re for life, and I think it would be a real shame to feel you had to go with a particular design or placement. That being said, no tattooist worth their salt would tattoo on a fresh scar, so you’ll have some time to decide on a design, if you so choose, while the scar settles and heals properly.
I’m sorry you’re feeling so nervous about your operation. All will be well Flowers

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 11/09/2020 21:29

@jessstan2 are you from 1950's Britain?

Lollyneenah · 11/09/2020 21:31

I love this for example..

Tattoos on hands - trashy or ok?
TheEmpressOfUtterBastardry · 11/09/2020 21:33

I've got LOVE on one set of knuckles and HATE on the other. Definitely not at all trashy Wink

SospanFrangipan · 11/09/2020 21:43

I've got a musical symbol on my right hand, below my thumb. Had it for 7/8 years, and to be honest I forget it's there, no one every passed comment on it, and has never been in issue regarding work.
Do what you want to do! FYI though, you have to wait minimum 4 years to tattoo over scar tissue.

ThorFull · 11/09/2020 21:48

I love a hand tattoo. They’re just beautiful when done well. I don’t have any but have been imagining a beautiful scorpion one finger, and an Aquarius constellation on my inner bicep. I’d never do it though. I’m not brave enough, and honestly, I think I stand out more by not having any! Everyone at my gym is tattooed. I’m trying to embrace the natural (going grey)
I didn’t realise that some artists would refuse to do them on hands.
But to choose a tattoo to cover A scar doesn’t seem like the right reason on to have one- you might not even want to Cover the scar once it’s there.

IlonaRN · 11/09/2020 21:52

Very bad idea.
Scars are cool.
All the places I have worked insist that visible scars can be covered with standard clothes - you can't cover your hands.
