Tattoos on hands - trashy or ok?

So long story short. I broke my wrist and will be needing a surgery. Will end up with a visible scar. I started contemplating getting a tattoo to cover it up. Please tell me - good idea or a bad idea?

Wrist or hand? Hand tattoos fade very quickly. My tattooist actually refused to do one on me because of that.
Wrist is fine I have a wrist tattoo that is one of my favourite tattoos.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/09/2020 20:16

Bad. But I don't like tattoos anyway.

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 11/09/2020 20:17

I have my "wedding ring" tattooed on my ring finger. The rest of me is pretty much covered too, but that's the one that shows unless I wear a massive chunky ring. It's your body, your choice!
Just find an artist with experience tattooing over scar tissue. It needs extra care and skill. Get loads of recommendations, view their work, and take your time to be sure they're the right person. Also depends on your design and style you want. Find a specialist.

Dear God, the sheer snobbery on here about tattoos!
They are not trashy if carefully thought out and done by a good artist.
Work environments are changing and varied; my son in law has his own consultancy business plus lots of tattoos and is very highly regarded in his industry, tattoos don’t affect your ability or professionalism.
The snotty judgemental attitudes on this forum I have seen today is like something from the 1950s.

I am a deputy head teacher with hand tattoos. Professionally it has never been a problem.

There's a good chance that any scar will fade to almost nothing over time - you'd really need to wait that long before having any tattoo on scar tissue in any case; by then, you might well decide that you don't need to cover it up.
missmouse101 · 11/09/2020 20:20

Utterly trashy. Also, it'll be navy blue and smudged in a few years' time. Horrible.

lakeswimmer · 11/09/2020 20:20

No - but then I don't like tattoos. If you do, then go for it.

Chloemol · 11/09/2020 20:23

Tattoos still visibly indicate lower standards though in terms of public perception. I have told my children they may be a barrier to success, that they will make them be judged before they can prove their worth and that it will be more difficult to succeed in employment as a result of visible piercings and tattoos. That is wise advice. I know everyone here knows a judge or surgeon full of them but truth is most respectable professionals do not have visible tattoos. They are almost a symbol to stop you progressing if in the wrong place.

What sort of school and where? Were you once in the Navy?
mineofuselessinformation · 11/09/2020 20:26

I have tattoos. I'm supposed to cover them for work but they are each there for a reason, so I don't - no-one has dared to challenge me because they know why I have them.
I agree with others that scars are part of who you are, so don't necessarily need to be hidden - I have a skin condition which causes white patches. I used to be very conscious about them, but suddenly wondered why I was. I don't even think about them any more apart from when the buggers spread.

Legoandloldolls · 11/09/2020 20:29

I dont have tattoos but I think they can look nice on hands. Something delicate like a vine going from.the wrist to the hand but not covering more than 1/3 of the back because it's hard to cover up then if you regret it. But if it was only a third some nice bangles and chucky rings can tone them.down - only imo.

Be aware that they often need redoing around the palm area. God that must hurt so much too!
It's your body. It's not trashy at all and I wouldnt judge. I just hate pain

You obviously live on some other planet🙄

There really is no need for this horrible outlook, the more ppl who have them the more acceptable it is, do you look down on police officers covered in tattoos? teachers? nurses?

Although I dont like them it isnt for me I am telling them. I do think people look down on them.

mineofuselessinformation · 11/09/2020 20:31

Showandtell, I'm paraphrasing you here....
'Tattoos visibly indicate lower standards'
'They are a symbol to stop you progressing'
WTF???
With people like you in society, yes, they will stop people progressing if those in positions of power use that judgement.
You really need to get over yourself, and let go of those judgy pearls you have such a firm grasp of.

SBTLove · 11/09/2020 20:33

@Showandtell1
No, YOU look down on them and you're passing on your nastiness to your kids. Let them grow up and make their own choices without your snotty attitudes.
I’ll ask you again would you sneer at the police officer or nurse helping you because they have tattoos?

Batshitbeautycosmeticsltd · 11/09/2020 20:34

Bad, just bad.

Not as bad as neck and face ones, though.

mineofuselessinformation · 11/09/2020 20:34

And just to add, when dc1 was very ill, we used to ask for the 'nurse with the tattoos' to come and put the needle in their very shit veins when she needed bloods drawn (up to 27 different samples in one sitting).
We knew she would do it first time, so we loved her and her tattoos!

SBTLove · 11/09/2020 20:34

@Legoandloldolls
They aren’t actually that painful 😉

Do you think the same of multiple facial piercings and facial and neck tattoos? When was the last time you saw a GP with a lip piercing? When did you see a police officer with visible tattoos? My friend was rejected at application for a tattoo although it was offensive and she later had it covered. But they did ask for a record of tattoos. People are put off by them. That may be old fashioned but it isnt being unkind to warn children that their future tattoo choices may not be prudent in terms of career
SBTLove · 11/09/2020 20:36

Nearly every Police officer I see has tattoos, full sleeves!!

ReginaaPhalange · 11/09/2020 20:36

A highly skilled surgeon where I work is covered up to their neck in tattoos. Would you turn down life saving surgery if he was going to operate on you? So many judgemental opinions here...

KitKat1985 · 11/09/2020 20:37

Honestly I think they look trashy sorry.

Are you sure the scarring will really be that noticeable? A lot of surgeons these days are very skilled and scarring often isn't that bad.
