Does your name have a song associated with it?

Do people sing it to you?

I have a name that has at least two songs associated with it. One less known than the other but I have occasionally had someone sing it to me. As a child I regularly had someone sing more famous song to me but now I, thankfully, rarely have to experience that. It's more irritating than infuriating but I don't understand why people do it.

Where do I start?

There must be several hundred variations of songs with my name in it. It's Maria.

I don't mind people knowing my first name on here.

Ave Maria by the boatload, How Do You Solve a Problem like Maria?, Maria from West Side story, etc.

I usually just fix them with a look nowadays and a very sarcastic "How original" before walking away. Takes the wind right of their sails.

TrashPanda · 16/08/2020 20:22

Yes lots Passenger, John Mayer, The Kooks, Neil Diamond, AC/DC to name a few

VaggieMight · 16/08/2020 20:23

Yes, it's a well known song and I've had people even walk past my house singing it. I feel very uncomfortable when the song is played 'for me'. From a young age it set off my creepometer. No one decent in my life has done it. It's not a bad song but I've noticed it's a certain type that makes the connection.

Jojoanna · 16/08/2020 20:24

Yes two songs that I know of have my name

Scarby9 · 16/08/2020 20:25

Yes. Title of a reasonably successful song in its day. But I have never had it sung at me.
However, I have never said my surname without someone saying 'Any relative of...( insert one of three choices here)? No. I'm not.

Mooey89 · 16/08/2020 20:26

Yep, Amy Winehouse made my name (with a different first letter) famous and it’s 100% my song and my friends always request it from the DJ and I dance to it 😂😂

FredaFox · 16/08/2020 20:26

@Everysinglebloodytime I’m a Jude!!

It tends to be drunk people or strangers that sing it. It could be worse!

It's a great song!

Yukkalye · 16/08/2020 20:30

A 70's song here too. One of my ds's has a song with his name in it but, fortunately for him, I've only ever heard my dh singing it. And that was when he was pissed on the night he was born (my dh was pissed obviously not my ds), and I was so cross with him (again my dh not my newborn ds!) that he never sang it again!

Izzabellasasperella · 16/08/2020 20:31

My Dad used to sing mine to me. It's from the 60s so not very well known now. Sad song.

SimplySteveRedux · 16/08/2020 20:36

Taylor Swift's Hey Stephen (although she really needs to learn the proper spelling...)

"Hey, Stephen,
I could give you fifty reasons
Why I should be the one you choose.
All those other girls—
Well, they're beautiful,
But would they write a song for you?"

I mean, I'll take that Grin

Terry? Although that is about a boy.
lilmishap · 16/08/2020 20:41

My full name has a very famous old song and involves Alabama and a banjo, sadly I'm known by several abbreviations and have a full compendium of songs that were sung at me, apologies and warnings about the devil were less common but still annoying.
Hilarity ensued whenever the class dickhead asked Do you knew me like I knew me followed by I'm still alive (obscure but many schoolboys knew it)
Turns out Runaround isn't a car reference and she needed to Wake Up because she was post coital not late for school.
Don't get me started on Leonard Cohen, and No it wasn't funny when they sang My name is not Susan.

Pregnant ladies take note certain names provide a wealth of 'fun' teasing opportunities. The novelty wears off quick.

I wonder if you might have the same name as me! Is one a shortened version and one the full name? People including my husband still sing the short one to me a lot!
SimplySteveRedux · 16/08/2020 20:43

I remember a much loved teacher called Iris in high school/college, the day she retired the entire sixth form sang "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls, was amazing. She was in floods of tears.

But at that point you don't necessarily know what those 'fun' opportunities will be. My parents thought my full name had Royal connections and didn't like the inevitable abbreviation.

sweetheartyparty · 16/08/2020 20:45

I have several, 'Julia' by the Beatles and Chris Rea also 'Julia says' by wet wet wet. I had the latter sang all the time when I was at college. I love my name

1970schild · 16/08/2020 20:49

I'm named after a song by the Hollies but also have had Leonard Cohen sung at me.

To the Judes - I've just been singing this for my children. Its one of their bedtime songs.

SimonJT · 16/08/2020 20:51

Yes, an odd country song by Bruce Cockburn.

hollyandkit · 16/08/2020 20:52

Mine's by good ol Barry Manilow. I actually LOVE the song and am happy to serenade myself if no-one else does (although I've had a fair few renditions) Grin

lilmishap · 16/08/2020 20:53

Those opportunities were/are....men/boys finding out my name.

I can honestly count on one hand the men who haven't referenced or sang a song at me on hearing it the first time.

By 5/6 it had got tedious!

BikeTyson · 16/08/2020 20:54

Yes, 2. One is well known and people sing it to me regularly (especially when I worked in a Wetherspoons and my name would come up on the till, many pissed stag dos kindly serenaded me). The other song is a bit niche and only two people have ever even made the suggestion, but that’s the one I was actually named after as my dad was a fan.

Ah ha. I suspect we might share a name. Or a variant thereof!
CovidSadness · 16/08/2020 21:00

Just googled mine only one song is out there it’s part of a film score by someone from Iceland. A good friend from school had the worst nightmare, his name was a Jilted John song - yes that one. His life was miserable for a while.

MsRinky · 16/08/2020 21:03

Yeah, Kate Bush and The Bluebells. Don't get them sung much anymore. My maiden name was the same as a 70s cop duo, I got the theme tune of that sung a lot, one of the reasons I changed my name when I got married.

My Mum is Eileen, the 80s were not a happy time.
