Does your name have a song associated with it?

Do people sing it to you?

I have a name that has at least two songs associated with it. One less known than the other but I have occasionally had someone sing it to me. As a child I regularly had someone sing more famous song to me but now I, thankfully, rarely have to experience that. It's more irritating than infuriating but I don't understand why people do it.

3 that I can think of (plus a 4th that my name is mentioned in) Shock I don’t think any of them are love songs Grin

Glepspodees · 16/08/2020 19:43

Whereas my name is the name of the song famous for being the Top Gear theme tune. Fortunately most people don't know what it's called!!

roundtwotooto · 16/08/2020 19:44

@PissPotPourri and @DrDavidBanner we name triplets!

I grew up in the southern US so I know your name ;)
Glepspodees · 16/08/2020 19:54

@elp30 As long as you don't attempt to sing the guitar riff to me Grin

lovelymm · 16/08/2020 20:00

Yes! It's a bloody brilliant song but it's about a transvestite!

cicatrix1 · 16/08/2020 20:00

In the 80s I used to get this song sung to me quite a lot.
A Rod stewart song.

Cocolapew · 16/08/2020 20:02

Yes but only by people of a certain age, it's a Beach Boys song.

Sarahlou63 · 16/08/2020 20:02

One by Thin Lizzy, another by Fleetwood Mac. Smile

gower4 · 16/08/2020 20:03

Yes, it's probably forgotten now but when I was a kid in the 80s adults used to sing it to me whenever they met me!

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 16/08/2020 20:04

Yaap names in the title..named after said song.

pallisers · 16/08/2020 20:05

Yes an old jazz standard. Years ago I worked for a guy who was a jazz musician and if his musician friends came into the office he would introduce me by saying "and this is..." and hum the opening bars.

Hardbackwriter · 16/08/2020 20:06

@Mamette

Yes a French pop song from the 80s. Only really got sung at me by French people as it’s not known much outside France.

Also a more recent (2010s?) mega worldwide hit which repeats my name over and over but it’s part of another word, really. People sang it at me for years.

Ella?
EKGEMS · 16/08/2020 20:07

Yes and I don't know how many people of both sexes have sung it to me in my life but way more than I care to recall

Hardbackwriter · 16/08/2020 20:08

Oh I'm sorry @Mamette, I posted that before I saw you asking another poster not to say what it is!

Erictheavocado · 16/08/2020 20:09

Until today, I knew of one, rather obscure song which has my name as its' title. I actually have a copy of the song because a friend of my mum gave it to me when I was a little girl. Outside of that friend, my mum, me and my dh, I don't know anybody else who has ever heard of it.
I have just googled my name as a song title and there are a few, more recent ones, but I suspect they were album tracks and having listened to them, I won't be buying them!

DelurkingAJ · 16/08/2020 20:10

@BikeRunSki

In song, I don’t live here anymore; you can get anything you want in my restaurant, and people want to know who the ** I am. I also have the same name as the stage name of a very famous 70s-80s rock singer. Infamous really.
Me too. Although I would add the children’s song that makes us a camel...
LemonBars · 16/08/2020 20:15

Sympathies to all of you who have to suffer people singing "your" songs to you. I'd love to know why they do it. I do understand the association because the second I hear the name "Layla" I immediately hear the famous guitar riff in my head but I wouldn't dream of singing it to them.

I don't know if I have any name twins on the thread but hello to anyone who has a name that was used in a song by both The Beatles and Guns N' Roses.

A Scott Walker song.

Everysinglebloodytime · 16/08/2020 20:17

My name is Jude.

Most people I meet sing the song at me and frequently emails start Hey Jude

I don't mind, it's a cracking song. Some of our younger students have never heard of it or the Beatles though Shock

BikeRunSki · 16/08/2020 20:17

That one too @DelurkingAJ. Much to a lot of people's entertainment, I am a Cub leader !

CaptainMyCaptain · 16/08/2020 20:17

@cicatrix1

Maybe the same as mine then.
LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 16/08/2020 20:19

@LemonBars that's always the bit people sing to me if they know it lol.

AyeCorona1 · 16/08/2020 20:20

My name is in the title (and lyrics) of 2 songs from the 80s, and is in the Beautiful South's Song for whoever.

My favourite version has my name in the title but is not in the lyrics, and is the one I claim as 'my' song. I heard it on the radio at a couple of really significant/poignant moments in my life which was a bit woo (especially the 5 minute car ride between the estate agents and my new house after picking up the keys!) but I find it incredibly reassuring and comforting.

CaptainMyCaptain · 16/08/2020 20:21

@Cocolapew

Yes but only by people of a certain age, it's a Beach Boys song.
Of its time but, if I am right, Victoria Corwen-Mitchell and David Mitchell called their daughter this. Maybe due a comeback - like my 1950s name.
