Does your name have a song associated with it?

Do people sing it to you?

I have a name that has at least two songs associated with it. One less known than the other but I have occasionally had someone sing it to me. As a child I regularly had someone sing more famous song to me but now I, thankfully, rarely have to experience that. It's more irritating than infuriating but I don't understand why people do it.

I've just looked at a list and I know what it is now. Threads like this draw me in because I just HAVE to know!

Graphista · 17/08/2020 12:41

Haha haha gotcha! Very amused it's now an ear worm as it's a VERY hard to get rid of!

I have a slightly different spelling and mainly went to school in England/wales as dad was army. Result of this was MANY non Scots teachers telling me I pronounced MY OWN NAME wrongly!

They'd pronounce it the french/English way with the emphasis on the 2nd syllable and pronouncing the 1st syllable wrongly

Usually they wouldn't start pronouncing it correctly/stop wrongly correcting me until after the first parents eve where my parents would correct them!

I even had one teacher try and tell me it WASN'T even a common name in Scotland! The woman had never BEEN to Scotland!!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 17/08/2020 12:41

Yes, me. A song released in 1975, very popular at the time but less well-known now. People from approx 40 up sing it to me.

Graphista · 17/08/2020 12:44

When at school in Scotland I also had boys who thought they were so original and hilarious by singing the song at me with huge emphasis on the 3rd word "gaily" because of the change in meaning of "gay" type words of course Hmm

Singing is one thing but the number of people who upon being introduced to me start - badly- doing the dance is a whole other level of embarrassing!

Graphista · 17/08/2020 12:48

@TooExtraImmatureCheddar and others with likely the same name if I'm right?

I remember asking why there were SO many girls at school with that name and they rolled eyes and said there was a massive hit song around time they were born and lots of girls were named after it.

I always think that kind of baby naming is so unoriginal and dating for the child!

I remember a number of older siblings/cousins of friends having girls in the late 80's that they named kylie or Whitney (Whitney was not a common name in Uk at that time) and thinking poor kid!

oomymoomy · 17/08/2020 12:56

Not me (one of the benefits of having a 'weird' name I guess, although I do share it with now more than one TV character). But I used to have a friend whose name was Anna Partridge. Christmas was not a happy time for her!

@CaptainMyCaptain

Once a jolly swagman....?
No, wrong country but a good guess. I'm not a Matilda.

1st name is from a musical via a playwright, middle name is from an American traditional song featuring a miner and his fruity daughter Grin

NB, I'm not called Rhubarb. Or custard.

CaptainMyCaptain · 17/08/2020 13:44

@therhubarbrothers I think I was mixing up two different songs. Yours is the 'met a miner 49er' one. I was thinking of that name.

Mumoftwo12345 · 17/08/2020 13:47

Hot chocolate. No one remembers it now so I only heard it when I was little.

Yes, that's my middle name. My first name is thankfully less unusual.

Nittersing · 17/08/2020 13:56

Yes, I have not just 1 very well known song but as of last year there are now two! ( along with a couple of movies).

The first song was about a prostitute and is very well known and has been sung to me be all and sundry ( teenage boys in my high school math class, drunks in pubs and clubs, family members at all occasions and newly introduced people I've just met!). The saving grace is that it's a late 70s song so early 20s and younger tended not to know it.

Well until song number two came out last year ...pop/rap genre and very popular with the teens...about a bad party girl.

sigh had to ban the kids from singing it at me.

On a side note my sisters are songs too...
Dolly Partons man stealer
And The Rolling Stones saying goodbye to.. .
My Mum was Beach Boys - Help Me...
Dad is "Big....." holding up a beam while the mine collapses.
And Grandma - Come on....

Spaceman101 · 17/08/2020 13:56

My name is in an Oasis song and a song about a car. It's also in a song that old people used to sing to me but I never hear that one now.

Spaceman101 · 17/08/2020 14:05

Just googled and there is about 15 songs with my name in. Would never have seen thought there would be so many.

Dryadia · 17/08/2020 14:12

Yep, and had it sung at me at school, also had a song titled with my boyfriend's name at the time sung very loudly at us.

2 of our kids are actually named after characters in two of our favourite musicals. War of the Worlds and Rocky Horror ( slight different spelling). Grin

One loves their name, other hates it with a vengeance and actually got us to change it by deed poll after GCSEs. Sad One of his sibling came up with a horrid nickname version of it which totally destroyed it for him.

VQ1970 · 17/08/2020 14:25

@FlippinNoah

Mine's by a band that gathers no moss...
I think we share the same name!

Done all my housework with the tune in my ear 😂 it was dementing me trying to work it out. Can't believe people were telling you how to pronounce your own name 😱 it's bad enough getting my surname said in several different ways but if that was my first name I would implode.

I don’t think we’re talking about the same name! Mine is definitely not common in Scotland - much more so in a different country in the UK.

Graphista · 17/08/2020 15:24

@Cheekychops73 yep had teachers addressing me by the English version almost all my school life!

@TooExtraImmatureCheddar I've not only lived in Scotland but wales and England too just not made it to Northern Ireland yet

FrankiesKnuckle · 17/08/2020 22:54

My child has - because it was a compromise between 2 pop culture songs!
They love it and sing it, hopefully nothing to bully about.

tabulahrasa · 17/08/2020 23:14

I’m named after a song, but no-one ever knows it because it’s a very obscure song by an even more obscure seventies band...

But then no-one has ever heard of my name either, because it’s a slightly less obscure but not commonly used Greek goddess.

I usually just say, yeah... it’s Greek, I’m not Smile

WellGoshDarnIt · 18/08/2020 10:36

Not me, but DD. When I was pregnant I had more or less decided on the name Sophie, if she was a girl. Then a friend who was due the month before me had her DD and called her...Sophie, (she didn't know I had it in mind). I was toying with using it anyway, then one day I was in the car and The Damned came on, with probably their most famous hit, (a cover of an old song). I was sold instantly and luckily DH liked it too. DD is 11 now and rolls her eyes when I play it to her, (no taste!!).
My sister was named after a song which involves love growing wherever she goes, and my mum's name is in loads of songs, notably one by Neil Sedaka. My brother is named after a band too. My name is French; I'll have to have a google to see if it's in a song!

Inadays · 18/08/2020 22:59

Yes, my name is the title of one of Elvis Costello’s most famous songs. I really like the song actually, and an old boyfriend used to play it for me occasionally, but thankfully never tried to sing it for me Smile
