How is everyone coping with the heat?

Just wondering as I suppose i shouldn't really complain but it's the heat at night, I can't stand.
Have fan on right now, windows wide, water spray and just a sheet for a cover...and it's just about bearable....

I'm not a fan. Growing up in West Wales means I'm not used to the heat here in East Anglia.

I've just taken DS to the park. We're going to hide inside until early evening. I can just sleep at night if I put the fan on full blast as soon as I get into bed.

PhoneLock · 10/08/2020 12:32

is there a part of Scotland that is less rainy than the rest?

The east coast. Stay away from the west coast.

Starksforthewin · 10/08/2020 16:13

KatherineJaneway that’s it exactly!

Loving in the South East, thirty miles or so from London, we haven’t had a ‘winter’ worth mentioning for years. I think I wore my ‘winter’ coat on three occasions last year. The raincoat on the other hand, got plenty of airings!

I have seriously been looking at moving North, investigating career options, house prices etc. I simply cannot bear the summer now, and it is only going to get worse.
We could sit outside virtually nine or ten months of the year. That is madness for England!

I am frantically checking the weather forecasts, and counting down the hours until it gets cooler.
It makes me ill and miserable.

Starksforthewin · 10/08/2020 16:14

Also, could our Scottish posters please advise the best part of Scotland for avoiding the midges?!

KatherineParr4 · 10/08/2020 16:45

The west coast is the worst. The rest of Scotland isn’t too bad. Anywhere near water which is damp attracts them but the season is June to end of August in general. Out with those times you’re okay most of the time and some years are better than others.

minnieok · 10/08/2020 17:09

What heat, hadn't gone above 26, (SW) hardly a scorcher. Saturday was warmest but not hot in the shade.

missingmum · 10/08/2020 17:36

@minnieok lucky you!

Tigersneeze · 10/08/2020 18:27

windows/shutters / curtains closed during the day - keeps most of the heat out, it makes a-big difference.

Ginfordinner · 10/08/2020 18:40

I live in London and haven't needed a heavy winter coat for years

we haven’t had a ‘winter’ worth mentioning for years

I’m in Yorkshire. In the “spring” of 2018 The Beast From The East came back three times. The snow drifts above Penistone were several feet deep, and I was panicking because DD was in year 13 and had several snow days off school.

We were then fortunate enough to have the best summer for years.

It’s interesting how much difference a couple of hundred miles makes in terms of weather. We are also several hundred feet above sea level. The village at the bottom of the hill from us is always a degree or two warmer.

The East side of the country experiences a lot less rain than the West or the middle. DD is at university in Newcastle and gets significantly less rain than we do on the edge of the Pennines.

Fancy a house swap Starksforthewin? Grin

I've done this today, it's still 27 in my bedroom as it's south facing 🥵

I did try taking a wet flannel to bed last night as someone suggested and it did actually help, I also took a nytol sleeping tablet too just so I could sleep!

My sun worshiper friend came over today and even she was struggling, we managed 40 minutes in my south facing sun trap of a garden, it's very humid in my house.

purrswhileheeats · 10/08/2020 20:37

My brain is shutting down in this heat. I got home from work this afternoon and could not find the keys for the back door anywhere Confused Hunted high and low and eventually gave up; the house was roasting and I was desperate to get some air blowing through.

Cat came in demanding his dinner, I opened up the container with his food in and yep there were the goddam keys. FML 😵

VioletVoice · 10/08/2020 20:48

Least you found them. I may put in a flask in freezer soon and use that when it's chilled

Starksforthewin · 10/08/2020 20:58

GinForDinner sounds very tempting! 😀 I’m in Harpenden. Good schools and fast commute into London 👍🏻

Great user name by the way. We did have a couple of days of BeastFromTheEast, but nowhere near as bad as the rest of the country.

Oblomov20 · 12/08/2020 15:05

Starting to get hacked off now. With the weathermen! Promising us storms and thunderstorms and a weeks worth of rain in one hour?

Promised on Monday?

To clear the humidity.

It's now Wednesday and I'm looking outside at the sky and it doesn't look like storms to me.

Seriously pissed off with weathermen promising us things that don't deliver.

FinnyStory · 12/08/2020 15:09

I never thought I'd be grateful for my plantar fasciitis but I have spent a lot of time today with my feet on an ice pack Smile

Me too. Looked on the Met app, now no storms or rain Sad

Maybe tomorrow

MrsMariaReynolds · 12/08/2020 15:40

This heat can f off to the far side of f. Currently 32 (for the -nth day in a row, it seems) in East Anglia. No sign of these supposed t-storms.

I've lived for many years in much hotter climates and never felt so uncomfortable as I do here. Bleh! 🥵

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 12/08/2020 15:49

DH and I are currently sat in DDs pool while she's at nursery! It's one of those big 8ft round ones. We bought it second hand on Facebook but turns out it was never used, and I'm so soooo glad we bought it 🥵

Frlrlrubert · 12/08/2020 15:57

I'm literally sat here watching the '100% thunderstorm' predicted by my weather app for 6pm get gradually downgraded.

Bah!

SecretWitch · 12/08/2020 15:59

I love getting out of the shower and then not being able to really get dry as humidity is so high.

We have air con in the bedroom. I am holed up in here for the foreseeable future.

Might try to convince my husband that move to Scotland is in order.

dementedma · 12/08/2020 16:01

Bloody loving it. We hardly ever get weather like this in Scotland and its wonderful

mogloveseggs · 12/08/2020 16:01

It is too fucking hot.
We've been so busy at work (waitress) and now I have to put a mask on to go shopping. I don't actually know if I can. Feel awful it's so humid.
Sat in the car trying to gear myself up for it. Only consolation is that m and s has air con lol

Frlrlrubert · 12/08/2020 20:01

Rain! Thank goodness.

Dowser · 12/08/2020 20:04

Heat , what heat?
Middling summers day on ne coast
Got to 21
Now we have bloody sea fret
I’ll be putting the heating on soon

justwinginglife1 · 12/08/2020 20:10

@Springersrock

I love it

I’m always freezing. Today I took my jumper off 😂
