How is everyone coping with the heat?

MrsGatsby99 · 07/08/2020 22:41

Just wondering as I suppose i shouldn't really complain but it's the heat at night, I can't stand.
Have fan on right now, windows wide, water spray and just a sheet for a cover...and it's just about bearable....

I did the wet clothes to go out today. Along with no bra because if im going to be uncomfortable in a face mask im damn well going to do what i can elsewhere on my body.

We need houses in the UK to be built in mind of the hot weather. We are also having our roofs done by the HA. Noise , nails dropped everywhere, visit from the fire brigade and wooden walkways on the scaffolding drawing in more heat.

Sunshineboo · 08/08/2020 00:51

am hot. and grumpy.

east midlands is boiling!

katy1213 · 08/08/2020 00:59

Fantasising about a crisp autumn day. Why don't English homes have air-con? I'd love an icy blast.

Tillygetsit · 08/08/2020 01:07

I hate it too hot always have. 3 fractious dcs squabbling and grizzling and me a puddle of doom.

IAmTooBloodyHot · 08/08/2020 01:08

Changed my username today 🥵
I cannot stand it. Think I might look into moving to Scotland........... 🤔

HeIenaDove · 08/08/2020 01:12

The taxi i used today had lovely air con

DrCoconut · 08/08/2020 02:17

It got a bit muggy later afternoon but lunchtime was really pleasant. A nice warm summer day after weeks of mostly cold and rain.

pinklashes98 · 08/08/2020 02:22

Not too good! My little boy who is 14 months has been awake since 1:30, trying to cool / settle him....tired!

managedmis · 08/08/2020 02:27

I closed every single window, curtain and blind in the house today and it has actually worked

^^

It really does! Seems counter intuitive but it's not

Laughing at the lasagne fanjo comment

Better than last year, I lived in flat in a sky rise in a large city last year. There were only windows on one side. Of the apartment and the windows didn't open past an inch, it was ultimately an oven 🙃😭

I moved to Australia two years ago and it sh*ts me no end how often Aussies will make fun of Brits for complaining about a heat wave. I was with a friend yesterday as he was scrolling Instagram, saw a post about how hot it is in the UK right now and said something like “ooooh 29 degrees hopefully they make it out alive.” I know it’s all in jest But a lot of Aussies just can’t comprehend how different the heat is in the UK! It’s stifling. Humid. It’s like a “closed” heat. Not to mention houses don’t have ACs and just aren’t built for the heat (in a similar way to a lot of Aussie houses aren’t built for the cold and Aussies can be massive whingers during winter.)
I honestly don’t miss British weather at all other than the few nice spring days we’d get. Autumn and winter just miserable. Spring sometime since- hit and miss. Summer I sometimes find just as if not more so miserable than the crap winter weather 😂 i can somehow handle a 35 degree day better here than I ever could a 28 degree day back home.

aprilfools19 · 08/08/2020 03:39

Forgot to add I do wonder if more and more people will start installing ACs or at least ceiling fans. Summers are only getting hotter. I think I’d have to if I ever found myself moving back to the UK. I have my ceiling fans on even at 25 degrees. And don’t actually think I could fall asleep in a hot room I’m so used to my room being an ice box during the summer months with the AC!

Nandocushion · 08/08/2020 04:05

I would love to know what all the UK posters (not Scotland) are saying is boiling hot there. Don't get me wrong, I agree with you, but I'm in a boiling hot US state and we were 39C today so I'm wondering if we're talking about the same kind of temps? We are pretty dry here tho so I know if you're humid, it's worse.

Most days, I wish I was in Scotland! Can't stand heat over about 28C max, love rain and fog.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 08/08/2020 04:20

I am in London Nandocushion and it has been I think 38 degrees here today. One of the hottest days ever recorded I believe. So, yes, pretty warm!

Newjez · 08/08/2020 04:33

I left Australia to get away with it.

It's worse here

ClaraLane · 08/08/2020 04:54

I’m currently in a hospital bed stark naked after a c section on Friday morning (yesterday) with newborn DS who refuses to sleep anywhere other than on me. We’re not allowed fans because of Covid and I’ve been awake since 3am yesterday morning because despite the midwives trying their hardest he won’t settle unless he’s attached to a boob.

Only 9 hours until DH can come and hold him for me 😭

dudsville · 08/08/2020 05:44

I'm cold natured. I'm in the south and night before last I went to sleep with those fleece lined socks on and an electric heat pad with a brushed cotton long sleeved nightgown, BUT even I felt the warmth last night. A cold shower before bed, thin cotton pyjamas, curtains open. Still woke at 4am. I have been sitting on the back patio drinking coffee - it's lovely out!

NoWordForFluffy · 08/08/2020 06:30

I'm on the NW coast and as PP said, we didn't have the heat that seemingly everybody else did. There was apparently a brief spell of 'hot-ish' after my lunch break at 2pm but it was back to warm when I finished at 5.

I don't mind missing out on this occasion!

BiteyShark · 08/08/2020 06:36

I know this is hated on MN but when we had the horrible heat a few years ago we bought a portable air con unit in the winter so the prices were low Grin

It's put on in the bedroom for a few hours each night and brings the temperature down to just about right for sleeping. Bloody bliss and when it packs up we will probably invest in a permanent one that has the unit on the outside.

reallifegetsintheway2 · 08/08/2020 06:36

I have bought 2 air conditioning units from B & Q - worth the expense to be cool at night.

Pollyputthepizzaon · 08/08/2020 06:42

First thing in the morning close every window and blind in the house. Shut the bedroom doors so no light/heat from the hallways gets in.

Leave it like that all day. It’s the only thing I’ve found that works. Don’t let any sun or outside heat in and in the evening you can throw the windows wide open.

Obviously you need good curtains not flimsy ones that let the light in.

40somethingJBJ · 08/08/2020 06:47

I’ve been awake since 4am and have thrown all the windows open to take advantage of the cooler air at the minute. Going to go round and close them all once it starts heating up again. I’ve got ceiling fans downstairs, plus various other fans dotted around. I have a fan on at night all year round as I’m always bloody hot, so this weather is killing me! Would love to live somewhere that stays below about 23 degrees all year round, as that’s about the most I can cope with!

Many congratulations but this sounds bloody hard, @Claralane, I don't know how you are expected to recuperate in such conditions. Hope it gets easier and you get some rest later. Flowers

I didn't assemble the furniture yesterday, too hot.
I'll be doing it now when it is still only 25°C.

Magicbabywaves · 08/08/2020 07:39

Another one with portable air con. (I’m in London). I went to uni in Scotland and I miss the weather there so much.
