How is everyone coping with the heat?

Just wondering as I suppose i shouldn't really complain but it's the heat at night, I can't stand.
Have fan on right now, windows wide, water spray and just a sheet for a cover...and it's just about bearable....

32 weeks pregnant... Cope just about OK till around tea time when I swore and decided whilst we have this heat, I will never cook a hot meal again. And it was only hot chicken in wraps with salad bits!
Going to try keeping windows and curtains shut tomorrow.... I think I'm on the end of my tolerance now...

@labyrinthloafer I guess I do have to be careful about overheating and probably be careful about getting too cold in Winter.

I will be checking with my consultant on Thursday, to see if there is anything he can do about it.

labyrinthloafer · 09/08/2020 21:31

Hope it's not a worry then. I knew someone who didn't feel injuries and it was tricky at times. Flowers

missingmum · 09/08/2020 22:10

@TheBananaInPyjamas I think I suffer from summer SAD, I actually feel ill in this heat, upset stomach, headache, rashes, dizziness and exhaustion, no sleep and it's really crap.

It makes me laugh in winter when people say "it's freezing" at 10 degrees

At least your heating bills will be low.

obscuringstumpy · 10/08/2020 01:33

@portocristo

Our upstairs is like a sauna, we have fans but I heard that if you open your loft covering it really helps so trying that tonight fingers crossed 🤞
Do you like being invaded by spiders ? 😂 we put cold water in the bath as that cools the air down,
Frownette · 10/08/2020 05:47

I was waiting for a taxi yesterday and a stranger came up and started talking about the heat. I was a bit confused at first as I thought I must know him.

Hopefully it's less muggy today!

Bluesheep8 · 10/08/2020 07:03

Heat? What heat? There's no heat here (W Yorks)

StCharlotte · 10/08/2020 07:13

Ice pack under the pillow. You can then flip over the pillow when you need and there will always be a cold side. Eventually the cold will permeate through the pillow anyway.

There is very much a north south divide weather-wise at the moment. Today's forecast where I am is 20 degrees max, London is 33 degrees max.

While I love hot weather, I think 33 degrees in London would be intolerable.

ReturnofSaturn · 10/08/2020 07:42

To the poster who said the heat in Australia isn't as humid.

I used to live over there and it was definitely the most humid weather I have ever experienced. Never experienced anything near as humid in this country. This was in Queensland in their summer.
I'd have sweat absolutely pouring down my back and stomach constantly and had to change clothes multiple times every day.

ReturnofSaturn · 10/08/2020 07:44

We did have air con though Grin

1940s · 10/08/2020 07:45

Coping so much better than I would be if I was commuting to my office on the tube in smart shoes, trousers and a blouse!

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 10/08/2020 07:47

I would never usually complain but I wish this heatwave was another week ! Ds is on holiday with his dad and I want to get my bedroom decorated while im here alone . Its dreadful, I felt genuinely unwell yesterday and had to stop.
However, I thoroughly recommend doing this naked, just a quick shower after and I'm sorted Grin

There was a couple of posts about Australia but I was one of them!
If you chose to live in QLD then yes, you need to expect high humidity.
I’ve only ever live in Perth and Melbourne and can definitely say the heat here never feels as suffocating and smoggy as it did in the UK. The UK is known for its high humidity in the summer which yes must of Australia is too (I spent a couple of weeks in cairns years ago in December and couldn’t bare it), but that’s what you get if you chose to live further up north of Australia ! Whereas in the UK you can’t really escape the humidity wherever you go

PhoneLock · 10/08/2020 11:32

I think you also build up a greater degree of tolerance if you spend longer periods in warmer climes. I would expect the same thing to happen to the majority of the population if the UK's warm periods lasted months instead of days.

grannycake · 10/08/2020 11:42

South Wales here - pouring with rain and a little bit of thunder

spiritedawai · 10/08/2020 11:44

I'm from the Caribbean and loving it!

Aww I totally feel you, I get similar. Hopefully it passes soon and gets a little bit cooler! Do look up Summer SAD, it's mentioned on the NHS website but not in detail, but lots of other journals and articles. Sadly not much that can be done about it though!

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 10/08/2020 11:53

I agree Aprilfools.I’m in Perth and find 35 degrees here much more pleasant than 27 in London, low humidity makes all the difference! You do acclimatise though, when I lived in Ireland we would go to the beach at 20 degrees, now that’s jeans and jumper weather! It’s forecast to be 16 here later in the week, which feels cold to me now. Visiting the UK again will probably kill me. Grin

Snog · 10/08/2020 11:54

I should move to Scotland. I'm not keen on rain though, is there a part of Scotland that is less rainy than the rest?

chargeorge · 10/08/2020 12:01

if I'm at home then its no clothes, if out then slightly more than nothing and sleeping is nude on top of the bed with windows open - this seems to work ok for me

aprilfools19 · 10/08/2020 12:12

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 I remember attending a friends wedding years ago in the UK before I’d ever been to Australia. Her husband is Aussie so his Aussie family and friends were over it was a 29 degree July day and I just remember his family members complaining so much about the heat and I could not understand at all how it was the Aussies moaning more than the Brits. I spoke to one lady who told me it’s a totally different type of heat compared to what she was used to living in Perth but I still couldn’t quite get my head around it. It’s not until I moved here that I understood exactly what she meant !! Summers can definitely be tough still but I’d take dry heat any day over smoggy.

KatherineJaneway · 10/08/2020 12:19

I live in London and haven't needed a heavy winter coat for years. It is due to be 31 today followed by 33 tomorrow and another 33 on Wednesday with relief coming on Friday (hopefully!). Ah well, I'm on my holiday so wine and afternoon naps are in order as is starting early and staying up late when it is cooler.
