I love pasta, and eat it several times a week. In fact, during the lockdown I've eaten even more pasta and bread than usual. I've still lost nearly a stone of weight.

I know different things work for different people, but it's the dogmatism I don't get. People here are obsessed with cutting carbs to the point where they can't see any other way.

Let's hear it for carbs.

I love carbs.
a baked potato with butter is a thing of beauty.

I am not convinced that extremely low carb diets are healthy.

RedCatBlueCat · 06/08/2020 21:06

I love carbs.
DH has cut carbs (plus breakfast, plus what I called his midnight snack - chicken sandwich type affair around 10.30pm).
Unfortunately, as he is adding fats to everything he cooks for us, the weight he has lost, I have mainly gained Sad.
Need to figure out what to do. I'm not cutting carbs. I'm not skipping breakfast. I guess DH needs to cook less.

PARunnerGirl · 06/08/2020 21:07

Yup! I eat whole grain carbs at every meal and usually in a couple of snacks each day too. If I skip carbs, I crave sugar and junk food and my willpower is just not good enough! So I eat a good, balanced diet (Including carbs), enjoy my daily exercise and seem to be able to maintain my weight and fitness without much effort.

purrswhileheeats · 06/08/2020 21:08

THAT IS SO UNFAIR!!!!! That was screamed in a Kevin the teenager voice BTW 😅

Pasta, rice and bread are not my friends - the only carbs that work for me are potatoes and bananas and even then I have to be careful 😓

BlueBirdGreenFence · 06/08/2020 21:11

Cannae beat mash potatoes 🤤

ChampagneCommunist · 06/08/2020 21:12

Crisps. More crisps. And even better, a crisp sandwich

PARunnerGirl · 06/08/2020 21:14

@purrswhileheeats This is me with any kind of refined sugar. It’s like I can feel it going straight onto my hips and tummy! Grin

SquishySquirmy · 06/08/2020 21:15

I guess different things work for different people, but I couldn't cut carbs completely!
I need them for energy before exercise - protein and fat by themselves are too heavy and take a long time to "settle" in my stomach.
Main reason though is I just enjoy them too much!
Mmmm lovely bread with lovely salty butter... Or a baked potato. Crisps I enjoy far too much and I have to watch myself with those.

All things in moderation for me - including the occasional cake!

IamChipmunk · 06/08/2020 21:15

I try and limit carbs. They are not my friend.
However I love them!
Penne pasta.
Tiger bread with a lot of butter! The whole loaf!
French stick, with a lot of butter!
Fresh baked rustique rolls, yes, with lots of butter.

I can take or leave chips though although our local takeaway ones are really good!

LangClegsInSpace · 06/08/2020 21:18

I have a bag of crinkle cut chips in the freezer and I plan to deep fry some of them tomorrow.

I make no health or dietary claims, I just want some chips.

PARunnerGirl · 06/08/2020 21:19

@IamChipmunk Yes! I have just been eating thick Scottish oatcakes with an even thicker layer of butter. I like to be able to see my teeth marks in the butter, it’s so thick. Grin

LajesticVantrashell · 06/08/2020 21:53

At the beginning of lockdown, I revisited the 'meal replacement' diet. But one month in and I was so fucking miserable that I decided to give up dieting FOREVER. Now, I eat what I want. And after a while the things you crave go away (chocolate, sweets) because you're allowed to have them.

So today I had a massive bowl of Shreddies for breakfast. Scrambled egg on a wholemeal bagel for lunch and prawn jambalaya for tea. No snacks needed. Just good old belly filling carbs (plus a bit of protein and veg thrown in)

Lottapianos · 06/08/2020 21:57

I love carbs too. I eat more of them towards the start of the day, and taper off a bit in the evening (usually), and choose wholegrain as much as possible but yes, big fan. I've tried eating high protein, high fat meals with no carbs, and it just made me feel a bit sick

TheSpottedZebra · 06/08/2020 21:58

I LOVE CARBS. I eat loads of them -and other thig s too. I've always been a healthy weight.

But just recently, the judgement! One of the best things about working from home wasn't the lack of commute; it was the lack of carb police. Ooh Zebra, do you know how many carbs are in that rice? Ooh Zebra, did you have breakfast? (Yes, muesli and fruit and yogurt). Ooh Zebra, that's SO MANY CARBS! I couldn't have carbs twice a day! What will you have for dinner?

Every fucking day.

Gomezzz · 06/08/2020 22:01

I love carbs, satisfying and yummy. Especially potatoes.

(And if it is an issue of weight, I have been able to lose weight eating carbs, it's usually when I add way too much cheese to pasta or potatoes that the calories get too high.)

ZoeTurtle · 06/08/2020 22:03

God I love bread. A big crusty bloomer with that fresh-baked smell. Heaven.

Pasta with butter, salt, and pepper.

I bought my neighbour some plant pots and they came round a few days ago with some homemade pilau rice. It was fucking amazing.

I would be so much healthier on low carb (diabetic) but I can't do it. Would genuinely rather die earlier than live without carbs.

Do you work in one of those places where people are always commenting on your food even though you didn't ask for a comment? I hate stuff like that.

'Ooh Zebra, do you know how many carbs are in that rice? Ooh Zebra, did you have breakfast?'

Oh people like this need to SHOVE OFF!

iklboo · 06/08/2020 22:05

I would commit obscene acts right now for a chip barm with a fuck ton of vinegar. But I'm doing 5:2 so I can't. Sob.

PurpleDaisies · 06/08/2020 22:07

Carbs are the best. I’m vegan so goodness knows what I’d eat without carbs.

Tonight’s new potato curry with rice and naan bread was particularly carbtastic and utterly delicious.

willitbetonight · 06/08/2020 22:12

Different things for different folk. I look at a sandwich and gain 3lbs. My very skinny friend can't eat fat. But eats carbs with every meal.

WhistlersandJugglers · 06/08/2020 22:12

I'm eating healthily at the moment and that includes carbs in reasonable amounts.
I don't think this should go to a second page without somebody acknowledging the true joy of a toasted bagel.

TheSpottedZebra · 06/08/2020 22:20

See, I think that bagels are actually an insult to bread.

Gomezzz · 06/08/2020 22:25

Bagels are heaven

AuntyFungal · 06/08/2020 22:26

Marie Antoinette is my dream queen - I will eat your cake ma’am.

Big love to the carb lovers Grin
