I love pasta, and eat it several times a week. In fact, during the lockdown I've eaten even more pasta and bread than usual. I've still lost nearly a stone of weight.

I know different things work for different people, but it's the dogmatism I don't get. People here are obsessed with cutting carbs to the point where they can't see any other way.

Let's hear it for carbs.

Veggie lasagne made with quorn mince. And ziti. And spinach and ricotta cannelloni from the local Italian restaurant. All with garlic bread obviously.

hamstersarse · 08/08/2020 14:16

Everyone loves carbs.

That’s not news. They are designed to make you love them and want more.

It’s not news

Firstly I’m Irish so have mashed potatoes in my blood steam!

Secondly I have ibs and can’t cope with a lot of fibre, fruit & veg. So bulk of my meals are carbs.

hamstersarse · 08/08/2020 14:17

@LollipopViolet

Life's too short to forgo carbs Grin

I've found my people! Macaroni cheese or a 4 cheese pizza are just the best... mmmmmm carbs.

Life will be short if 4 cheese pizza is your thing

Go for your life

PurpleDaisies · 08/08/2020 14:21

I think you might be a bit carb deficient @hamstersarse

I’d recommend a chip butty to remedy that.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 08/08/2020 14:22

I'm in!
There's no way anyone is going to convince me that having 3 peperami sticks is healthier than a baked spud or bowl of lentil soup for lunch.
It's lasagne with salad AND garlic bread at the home of shitty cakes this evening.
.

They don't make you fat either.

My all time fave brekky/small meal is loathed by both the carb haters or the"offensive smell"brigade members i know. It consists of
two crumpets covered with tinned spag in tom sauce, a sprinkle of garlic powder then grated cheddar&liberal squirting of sriracha on top. At a push ill have a toastie or eggs on toast(still with the sriracha : )..but im addicted to my crumpet carb brekky. Powers me up for a decent workout. Penne most nights for dinner and usually dhal&naan for lunch as i freeze stuff at weekend.

Camomila · 08/08/2020 14:40

I love carbs too. My nonna is 87 and has probably had some form of pasta every day of her life
(apart from Wednesdays, those were home made gnocchi days when she was younger).

My Filipino PILs eat rice or noodles every day too.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 08/08/2020 14:46

Was it the gorgeous Sophia Loren who once said "Everything you see, I owe to spaghetti" Grin

Lostinbooksandcoffee · 08/08/2020 14:47

I love carbs in all forms!

Freshly baked bread with cheese
Homemade pizza was fresh tomato sauce and gooey mozzarella
Homemade chips that are crispy on the outside and fluffy inside
Jacket potato with lots of butter

Ooh, carbs are lovely. I eat them for most meals. Carbs are not the devil. Love this thread.

Lostinbooksandcoffee · 08/08/2020 14:48

Pasta!! How can I forget pasta. We eat it several times a week. Love pasta!!

PurpleDaisies · 08/08/2020 14:54

Pasta (and it’s cousin gnocchi) is a staple here too. I’ve got a cupboard full of different shapes.

hamstersarse · 08/08/2020 15:20

@tectonicplates

Interested...what does make you fat?

PurpleDaisies · 08/08/2020 15:21

@hamstersarse why are you on this thread? It clearly isn’t for you.

ButterMeCrumpets · 08/08/2020 15:28

I love carbs and most food really Grin.

I don't think a low carb diet is for me and I think I would crack and have a bread binge if I tried one Wink

feetfreckles · 08/08/2020 15:39

Not a carb fiend, but dinners are just not complete without some cheap, filling carbs

Suspect there is a certain amount of snobbery in not eating carbs, and no wonder people lose weight trying to eat enough calories on a budget with no carbs

Perfectly healthy weight and want to stay that way so I will keep eating my carbs in balance

Leflic · 08/08/2020 15:57

I dearly love carbs but the tape measure of doom says no.

My only hope is that when I’ve lost enough weight to eat a few carbs , cold roast potatoes have been shown to hardly raise your blood sugar at all.
And obviously after they’ve been in the fridge there’s usually a few less than went in for me left.

wowfudge · 08/08/2020 16:20

It's very simple @hamstersarse, what makes you fat is eating and drinking more calories than you expend.

In the past I lost a lot of weight doing the old green days on Slimming World - I ate lots of pasta as I love it. I've lost a stone and half on my gym's weight loss eating plan this year and I've had carbs every day and stuck to the calorie limits set for me. The trainers keep telling us that if you follow a fad diet and deprive yourself of everything you like you won't find it sustainable.

Just wonder why you needed to lose weight in the first place 🤷‍♀️
Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 08/08/2020 17:03

Really @hamstersarse why are you so determined to be provocative/barbed just because a few people wanted to harmlessly share a love of potato?

thecatneuterer · 08/08/2020 17:06

Brilliant thread. I love carbs and have LOADS! Pasta, bread, rice, cereal, potato - basically anything carby. Oh, and shed loads of fruit too, which I understand MN also consider to be carbs. And I have to have something heavy and carby before going to bed or I can't sleep.

And I'm not remotely fat.

wowfudge · 08/08/2020 17:10

@hamstersarse because I went through periods of eating too much, moving too little and was overweight. Stress and tiredness contributed to my eating too much. Why the feck else do you think I needed to lose weight?

hamstersarse · 08/08/2020 17:32

Don’t know why you’d be so sensitive about the things you want to do 🤷‍♀️

Go for the pizza and pasta all you like. But trying to promote it as a healthy lifestyle...well it’s just not. Maybe all ‘these people’ on MN have a point when 24,000 people a year die from type 2 diabetes 🤷‍♀️

EasilyDelighted · 08/08/2020 17:32

I love carbs too. I tried low carb high fat a few years ago and felt greasy and ill from the high fat meals, never satisfied, always hungry and anxious the whole time. Everything in moderation.
