The carbohydrate appreciation thread

I love pasta, and eat it several times a week. In fact, during the lockdown I've eaten even more pasta and bread than usual. I've still lost nearly a stone of weight.

I know different things work for different people, but it's the dogmatism I don't get. People here are obsessed with cutting carbs to the point where they can't see any other way.

Let's hear it for carbs.

Carbs are very delicious but they make me feel like shit. I've been low carbing/keto for 6 weeks and my IBS has gone, my anxiety and depression have all but disappeared, brainfog has gone and I have tonnes more energy. I wish I was the sort of person who felt healthy eating lots of carbs but I've had to accept the reality that it's never going to happen Sad

feetfreckles · 08/08/2020 17:59

There was a study recently that showed that different people responded differently to carbs

I seem to recall it favoured carbs overall as best for most people, but said that some people were better with low or no carb and some were better with very high carbs

So eat what suits you best and don't assume what's right for you is right for anyone else , and certainly don't try to do people down who are eating what is for most people the healthiest diet . Low carb is not good for everyone at all.

It's best to ignore the keto advocates or those who consider themselves experts. A diet high in red meat, things like pork belly and chops, pork scratchings, cheese, cheese and more cheese is hardly healthy. It would be interesting to see some research for keto diets in relation to cardiovascular disease and high cholesterol. I no longer work as a practice nurse but all NHS advice is for a balanced diet. I'd be interested too to know how many calories a day are consumed on a typical keto type diet.

My dc love their carbs too and we doubled up tonight with ziti and homemade chips.

I’m not sure the NHS advice is working since 63% of adults are overweight or obese
EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 08/08/2020 18:25

I highly doubt people are obese because of eating potatoes...

mamaduckbone · 08/08/2020 18:38

The only way I can lose weight is by cutting carbs, and I feel very much better without them, but that doesn't mean I don't love them...pasta I can do without, but bread in all its forms, or a lovely fluffy jacket potato...food of the gods.

Walkacrossthesand · 08/08/2020 18:45

I was you, OP, loving my staple carbs - until I was told I had type 2 diabetes. So it seems my metabolism can't handle carbs after all.

I've adjusted to my new way of eating, and I don't judge others for eating carbs - as someone said upthread, it may be that some can, some can't.

SistemaAddict · 08/08/2020 18:49

Freshly baked homemade bread, toasted, with proper butter. Or crusty rolls with homemade soup.

Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, honey roast carrots and parsnips, cranberry sauce and stuffing. No meat, I'm veggie, and gravy is the devils diarrhoea but give me all the veg and the trimmings. Followed by crumble and custard of course.

tectonicplates · 08/08/2020 20:01

@Walkacrossthesand For me it's more about the One True Way manner in which people on MN are so anti-carbs. The way people pile on to someone who dares to eat a bowl of fruit salad.

Yes but that’s where crisps, French fries, chips, roasties and jacket and cheese and potato salad come from. A small potato with no fat or oil probably won’t make you obese but it’s not that tasty. And if you don’t burn it off the sugars get stored
BarbaraofSeville · 08/08/2020 20:22

I doubt very much that many of the overweight or obese people are following NHS dietary advice.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 08/08/2020 20:48

Luckily the NHS doesn't advise people eat crisps and chips regularly.

Besides everyone knows that the best form of potatoes are hash browns and smiley faces Smile.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 08/08/2020 20:51

Personally I have always been a carb queen and have never been above a size 8.

I actually tried a low carb 'diet' years ago and I felt like shit all of the time. I now eat a high carb vegan diet and have never felt better.

breadcakebiscuits · 08/08/2020 21:45

I don’t discriminate against savoury carbs either.

Double carbs - chip butties, samosas, pancakes with nutella - are even better.

Someone I work with developed scurvy from giving up fruit in order to lose weight on a VLCD. Loads of symptoms including insomnia, mouth ulcers and menstrual flooding, but the GP didn’t recognise the signs. Dentist knew immediately because the mouth ulcers are supposed to be very distinctive.

wowfudge · 09/08/2020 15:57

There are lots of veg which are sources of vitamin c so the person who developed scurvy must have swerved veg too - potatoes are a source of vitamin c.

SistemaAddict · 09/08/2020 16:25

My house is filled with the smell of freshly baking bread 😃 The children might decide they want toAst for dinner instead of pasta as freshly made bread toast is their favourite.

BotanyBetty · 09/08/2020 19:16

Carbs help the body make serotonin from tryptophan. As well as being fucking delicious.

EasilyDelighted · 09/08/2020 22:34

They just satisfy my appetite in a way protein and fat never seems to, I stay full for much longer than if I try and do without them.

tiredanddangerous · 09/08/2020 22:39

I have found my tribe! I eat carbs with every meal. I lost 3 pounds in weight last week.

The batshittery I've read on here is beyond belief...posters being told the reason they're not losing weight is because they're eating fruit is a regular occurrence ffs.

Fantail · 10/08/2020 08:47

As a T1 diabetic it’s easier for me to manage blood sugar levels if I keep a close eye on carbs. I don’t limit vegetables (including root vegetables), eat some fruit, add milk to my coffee. My indulgence is dark chocolate. But otherwise that’s it. Unless I have a low (infrequent) then a juice box brings me up pronto.

I don’t particularly care what others eat as long as they don’t also give me advice on managing my condition (no adding cinnamon to my food will not cure me!)

hamstersarse · 12/08/2020 07:17
@hamstersarse because I went through periods of eating too much, moving too little and was overweight. Stress and tiredness contributed to my eating too much. Why the feck else do you think I needed to lose weight?
You needed to lose weight because you ate too many carbs. It’s just a fact.

You don’t put on weight eating low carb. Eggs, meat, cheese and veg don’t make you put on weight.

pinkbalconyrailing · 12/08/2020 07:30

if you eat more calories than you need, no matter where they come from, you gain weight.
it is very easy to overeat on any food.
many low carb options are very calorific.

hamstersarse · 12/08/2020 08:01

Have you ever tried to overeat egg? Cheese (no crackers)? Steak?

You can’t and won’t

Carbs are what you overeat

SistemaAddict · 12/08/2020 11:08

🥱

I have homemade dough rising for our lunchtime pizza and freshly made marinara sauce and I will empty a full packet of cheese on top to complete the ensemble. No such thing as too much mozzarella according to my dc.
I'm going to try making a cherry Bakewell crumble next week (can't get the ingredients until then). The weather will decide if it's with vanilla ice cream or custard.
