The carbohydrate appreciation thread

I love pasta, and eat it several times a week. In fact, during the lockdown I've eaten even more pasta and bread than usual. I've still lost nearly a stone of weight.

I know different things work for different people, but it's the dogmatism I don't get. People here are obsessed with cutting carbs to the point where they can't see any other way.

Let's hear it for carbs.

@tectonicplates

Thank you so much for your comments, everyone, and well done to all the weight loss people. You've reassured me that maybe this place hasn't gone completely insane. I'm sick of seeing threads where people ask for ideas for fruit salad and they get a huge pile-on of people saying they'll get fat if they eat fruit. People are so dogmatic and authoritative about it, it really is weird.
Hi OP,

Exactly, I agree, what is so wrong with fruit? I ate tons of fruit and carbs when I was losing weight. I still do.
Eating fruit is not akin to freebasing a bag of caster sugar as far as I know. Some of these ‘militants’ seem to think it is though Confused

TurkeyBasterHopeItWorks · 07/08/2020 11:45

@Beautyoftheirdreams

I'm coming up to 3 stone lost since May and I eat carbs every meal and CHEESE (shock horror) at least one meal a day. I bloody love carby cheesy goodness
^^ You are my kind of person!

What about a carby cheesy extravaganza........... Cheddar Mash. Oooooh yeah, I bloody love a mashup!

igotdemons · 07/08/2020 11:54

Carbs are my favourite foods, I just love them! 😋 I went on a ‘diet’ just before lockdown and have lost 20kgs still eating carbs everyday. I was warned by my Doctor about making sure my ‘diet’ was balanced, none of this ‘cutting out carbs rubbish’.

Ooh I found another thread on AIBU about a similar issue. It looks like people are finally starting to take a stand about this stuff. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3988410-to-not-have-a-clue-what-a-healthy-diet-is-anymore

We are having homemade pizza with homemade garlic bread for dinner followed by cake. Proper carb fest! Can't wait!

LaureBerthaud · 07/08/2020 16:27

@PurpleDaisies Tonight’s new potato curry with rice and naan bread was particularly carbtastic and utterly delicious

Where was your protein?

startrek90 · 07/08/2020 16:53

I have gestational diabetes at the moment so I am having to limit carbs. And meat. And fish. Basically I am living off salad, veg and cheese. Plus side is I may finish this pregnancy lighter than I started. Downside is I would sell everything I have for a filthy kebab and chips followed by my MiL homemade black forest gateau.

I love carbs, especially pasta. I also miss garlic Parmesan linguine, lasagna and curry with rice, poppadoms and naan bread.

Hopefully only 3 more weeks of this...

LollipopViolet · 07/08/2020 16:56

Life's too short to forgo carbs Grin

I've found my people! Macaroni cheese or a 4 cheese pizza are just the best... mmmmmm carbs.

PurpleDaisies · 07/08/2020 16:58

I don’t think every single meal needs to be perfectly balanced @LaureBerthaud

This curry also had red lentils, cashews and spinach.

MotherWol · 07/08/2020 17:07

I have found my people. During lockdown I’ve really got good at bread making, and soft fluffy rolls and delicious crispy toast have been staples. But can we have a moment of appreciation for rice? Just the smell of basmati rice with a drizzle of melted ghee, or jasmine rice steamed with ginger is HEAVEN.

JadesRollerDisco · 07/08/2020 17:12

I decided a little while a go to never ever diet again. It's been truly liberating and it's still early days. I thought I would eat nothing but cake and chips, but I am eating less of these foods. No crazy binges. I just feel calm about food. My spare time has changed. I used to spend my spare time meal planning and working things out on apps calories or carbs or points. Then I'd read slimming magazines and watch programs about losing weight. It was all consuming. Now I eat healthy or unhealthy or all the shades in between, and I eat some carbs, but my sugar intake has dramatically reduced. I just don't like really sugary foods. I told myself I could eat ice cream whenever I wanted, and after the first flurry of excitement haven't bought any. I don't get excited by the prospect of eating a mountain of cake, but I do enjoy not worrying about having a second Yorkshire pudding, some sweet potato mash or some macaroni cheese. I'm eating more protein, more healthy fats, more fruit, a bit less veg and loving my carbs. I forgot how perfect baked potatoes can be

JadesRollerDisco · 07/08/2020 17:15

I have started baking again though! I really want to make a perfect corn bread and Jamaica ginger cake. Plus I love making tray bakes especially tiffin and rocky road

DrCoconut · 07/08/2020 21:49

I remember posting a recipe on here for cheesy potato bake . It's basically bubble and squeak in a dish with grated cheese and baked till all bubbly. I was slaughtered for it being unhealthy and disgusting by several people

MsRinky · 07/08/2020 23:36

I made an exceptional potato pizza tonight. I am fat but happy.

SistemaAddict · 08/08/2020 00:05

Some people are weird about carbs. An old boyfriend once said in response to a friend who told me to cut carbs: "Ah, carbs. Or as I like to call them: food." I hate the way they are demonised. And the posters who criticise fruit?! Unless you are diabetic and eating whole mangoes or pineapples then stfu, fruit is full of natural goodness. And even better if made into a crumble and served with custard or ice cream Grin

tectonicplates · 08/08/2020 01:54

Ooh yes, fruit crumble is a most excellent thing, and it's blackberry season right now so that's even better. Yum.

Lasagne, baked spud (or chips, or both?) and garlic bread

🤤

managedmis · 08/08/2020 02:20

Fruit crumble with ice cold thick cream

Heaven

@DrCoconut Post the recipe here if you want!

It's easy to do. Use leftovers or cook the bits specially. Mix cooked veg with lovely buttery mash. Put in a suitable dish, top with grated cheese and cook till melted and bubbly. I like leeks and mushrooms in this but it's up to you! Especially nice with baked beans and a glass of something delicious.

Bloodybridget · 08/08/2020 13:44

Hurrah for potatoes, bread, rice, pasta, couscous, polenta, noodles . . what have I forgotten?

MacduffsMuff · 08/08/2020 13:54

Ah, I belong here. Carbs are just better in every way.

Carbs are for life, not just for Christmas you know.

Lelophants · 08/08/2020 14:01

Carbs are good for you and part of a healthy and varied diet. The people I know who cut carbs tend to yoyo their weight all the time. What's wrong with being healthy? Instagram skinny isn't healthy and I hate how it's normalised. 🙄

Rant over. Yay for carbs! Favourite pasta?

shas19 · 08/08/2020 14:14

I love bread and potatoes. I think I would still eat mash potatoes even if the sun was splitting the tress. Crispy roast potatoes with loads of salt garlic and rosemary omg. I would probably have chips with everything also.
