The carbohydrate appreciation thread

I love pasta, and eat it several times a week. In fact, during the lockdown I've eaten even more pasta and bread than usual. I've still lost nearly a stone of weight.

I know different things work for different people, but it's the dogmatism I don't get. People here are obsessed with cutting carbs to the point where they can't see any other way.

Let's hear it for carbs.

I love lasagne and chips. I'm currently awaiting a hospital appointment to confirm coeliac disease so am hoping that gluten free pasta is ok 😫

PrincessHoneysuckle · 06/08/2020 22:27

God yes.Im calorie counting and have lost a stone so far.I eat carbs with every meal.

tectonicplates · 06/08/2020 22:28

Bagels are fabulous. Bring it on.

TheSpottedZebra · 06/08/2020 22:28

Just have more chips if it's not, DrCoconut ? (Best of luck, obvs)

WhistlersandJugglers · 06/08/2020 22:40

I reckon bagels might be the ultimate food. Raisin and cinnamon bagel for breakfast, poppy seed bagel with Philadelphia and cherry tomatoes for lunch, pizza bagel for dinner.
Only potatoes are as versatile. Hash browns and eggs for breakfast, curry chips for lunch, baked potato for dinner.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 06/08/2020 22:44

I'm trying to cut carbs at the minute and it's fine. I had a massive omelette for breakfast, spiralised courgette with steak pieces and garlic for dinner tonight... it was lovely... but I would sell my soul for chippy chips / white bread / biscuits / donuts / chewy cookie.

This is my problem. I can't moderate carbs.

I lose weight before going on holiday every year and promise myself I'll eat super healthily on hols. Halo Salads etc. I LOVE salads.

But then I end up having croissants for breakfast, crusty bread for lunch, pizza for dinner. I can't be trusted.Hmm

I feel like I've found my people Grin

They are a lot of calories for low levels of nutrition ( obviously potatoes are bloody fantastic but always better with fat and oil, which is a fatal combination for most).

I just did a thread on my love of sourdough rye bread. A soft Chelsea bun and a big bag on onion ring crisps are also contenders. But carb calories go straight to the area under my bust. Not a good look.

TurkeyBasterHopeItWorks · 07/08/2020 00:03

@Gomezzz

I feel like I've found my people Grin
^^ Yes, me too!

I love carbs and I’m not ashamed to say it!

My favourite is potatoes- roasted, mashed, chippy chips, oven chips (rooster ones), boiled, you name it! I also like rice and pasta.

I have struggled with my weight all my life but last year I lost 4 stone (yes I’ve put a little bit back on). But I lost the weight by eating a balanced diet with plenty of carbs in. Carbs are not the enemy IMO!

shinynewapple2020 · 07/08/2020 00:32

@PurpleDaisies

Carbs are the best. I’m vegan so goodness knows what I’d eat without carbs.

Tonight’s new potato curry with rice and naan bread was particularly carbtastic and utterly delicious.

Ooh 3 carbs in one meal - that's my kind of food Smile

CherryMaple · 07/08/2020 00:38

@DrCoconut The gluten free lasagne sheets taste fine. The other pasta? Hmmmmm.

happylittletree · 07/08/2020 00:45

@DrCoconut if you can source Rummo gluten free, do it. The linguine is my favourite.

I also have a thing about carbs. I get anxious if I eat them. I appreciate your embrace if them, OP!

Ilovesausages · 07/08/2020 01:23

I have tried low carbing and in some ways I do well on it - I tend to not feel very hungry at all and do lose weight.

But after a while I just feel so miserable.

I’m eating carbs now and have been
For a few months and still appreciate them!!

SleepingStandingUp · 07/08/2020 01:25

I'm hungry, I can't sleep and now I want mash potato sandwich

DebbieFiderer · 07/08/2020 08:07

I've lost 6 stone in 10 months and I eat carbs every day, I bloody love them! Pasta in particular but all carbs really. I do generally limit them to dinner only though, not in a restrictive way, but just that I find protein fills me up more so I'd rather have protein plus veg for breakfast and lunch then a big carby dinner. I do have to watch myself though with carby snacks as my downfall (and the reason I still have 6+stone to lose!) is snacking on bread and butter, toasted bagels dripping with butter and cream cheese, etc. It's the fats that go with carbs that cause me to gain weight I think more than the carbs themselves

Estrellente · 07/08/2020 08:13

I love carbs. They do tend to get me into a sugar rush/crash cycle though.
I’ve tried low carving and it works but I just don’t feel good on it.

At the moment I’m loosely intermittent fasting and keeping a rough eye on calories- 1200-1500 cals consumed mostly between 1-7pm is my vague “zone” and that’s working slowly but steadily for weight loss that I feel fine on. Within those parameters I eat whatever food I fancy.

Estrellente · 07/08/2020 08:14

I also love carbs because they are butter vehicles Grin

homemadecommunistrussia · 07/08/2020 08:16

Carb carb carb the word has lost all meaning.Smile

BendingSpoons · 07/08/2020 08:16

A meal is not a meal without carbs. I explained to DH that if we are having a salad for dinner (very rare in high temps, we prefer pasta etc) it must be accompanied by potatoes or pasta, or at the very least bread. I do also believe in protein at every meal too!

I'm not overweight but could ideally drop half a stone. The times I have lost weight easily have been when I have exercised more, either lots of walking or just being busy. I don't care it's apparently 80% food, I don't want to change that!

sweetbirdofjuice · 07/08/2020 08:29

oh this thread is a delight to read. I've been on a diet so being careful but last night made a spicy chickpea stew with roast new potatoes in garlic and lemon AND the most luscious rice pudding with summer fruits. total carb paradise.

pinkbalconyrailing · 07/08/2020 08:34

we swapped mostly to 'brown' carbs.

I am grateful for carbs as my hollow legged teenagers would be bloody expensive to fill up on low carb.

Beautyoftheirdreams · 07/08/2020 08:37

I'm coming up to 3 stone lost since May and I eat carbs every meal and CHEESE (shock horror) at least one meal a day. I bloody love carby cheesy goodness

tectonicplates · 07/08/2020 11:20

Thank you so much for your comments, everyone, and well done to all the weight loss people. You've reassured me that maybe this place hasn't gone completely insane. I'm sick of seeing threads where people ask for ideas for fruit salad and they get a huge pile-on of people saying they'll get fat if they eat fruit. People are so dogmatic and authoritative about it, it really is weird.

OP posts:
SistemaAddict · 07/08/2020 11:25

Veggie lasagne and chips and maybe some garlic bread for good measure. Carbs are good!
Wotsits on Warburtons medium sliced no butter just piled on and folded over.
Chip butties.
Fried potato butties (mash fried up)

HaudMaDug · 07/08/2020 11:33

May I recommend the double carb delight of macaroni cheese on a big crusty buttered roll for lunch. Mmmmmmmmmmm
