How much fruit and veg have you had today?

RachelLyg · 28/07/2020 17:45

An 80g serving of fresh fruit or veg and a 30g serving of dried fruit counts as one of your 5 a day.

Spinach (half portion)
Tomato and Bean soup (1 portion)
1 quarter cantaloupe melon (1 portion)
Carrots (half portion)
Hummus (quarter portion)
Celery (quarter portion)
Cauliflower (one portion)
Brussels sprouts (one portion)

That's 5 and a half portions and I don’t think I can fit any more in. I’m trying to get to 7 portions per day.

Breakfast 1 whole white grapefruit and 1 whole red grapefruit (I'm a pig)
Lunch 20ish green grapes (got 20 reds for later).
Dinner Frozen peas + frozen baby carrots and some frozen broccoli added to my chicken soup. Do frozen veg count?

eandz13 · 28/07/2020 18:34

Banana
Glass of fresh orange
Tomatoes, cucumber and mixed leaves (on sandwich)
Strawberry and banana smoothie
Handful of spinach (in an omelette)
Carrots and broccoli with my tea

I had some hummus too. Do chickpeas count? I actually don't know. I've never thought about it.

RachelLyg · 28/07/2020 18:35

Actually I had some pickled baby beetroot, from the jar. Hats another half, so I’m on 6. With some grapes later, 6.5 for the day.

Apparently we should be aiming for 10. However only 28% of adults actually eat 5 currently.

RachelLyg · 28/07/2020 18:40

I’m just wondering how to get up to 10. Without living off solely veg and fruit.

The other things I’ve eaten today are:
1 piece seeded sourdough with marmite
2 eggs
1 salmon fillet
Small portion of new potatoes

All of which have health benefits.

A pear
Tomato
Plum
Kale
Blackbeans

ExtremelyBoldSquirrels · 28/07/2020 18:44

I don’t know about portions, but so far today I’ve had:

Blueberries
Watermelon
Tomato (cooked and raw)
Spring onion
Carrot
Onion
Celery

I’m thinking about dinner now, and considering including: onion, green beans, broccoli, peppers, spinach and enough coriander to count as a reasonable portion (rather than a garnish).

Generally, rather than portion counting, I just try to make sure I put lots of veg into everything and/or serve several vegetables as part of the meal. DH has remarked many times that I put a lot of veg in things and he definitely didn’t eat anything like as much veg before he met me. I think he’d actually like less veg, but I do the cooking so he can just put up with half their plate being veg.

Apolloanddaphne · 28/07/2020 18:45

I have had half an avocado so far. Will have carrots and broccoli with dinner. If potatoes cunt then I will have new potatoes too. I don't really eat much fruit.

CountFosco · 28/07/2020 18:46

Breakfast: banana, 1 serving mixed berries
Snack: 1 serving of grapes
Lunch: leftover homemade spag bol with 2 servings veg in the recipe, nakd bar (1 serving dried fruit)
Dinner: Lomo saltada (1-2 serving veg) then pavlova (probably only half a serving)

7-8. We're having Wine with dinner, I think that counts, no?

CormoranStrike · 28/07/2020 18:46

I’ve had a banana and mixed frozen berries in a smoothie, grapes and olives, and hummus if that counts.

maddiemookins16mum · 28/07/2020 18:48

A banana
A portion of carrots and one of broccoli.

That’s me done.

Does raspberry ripple ice cream count?

DivisionBelles · 28/07/2020 18:48

6.4 portions according to NutraCheck.

Banana for breakfast
Satsuma for a snack
Cucumber and lettuce at lunch
Roast peppers, roasted red onions, cherry tomatoes, more cucumber and lettuce for dinner.
