I was in my town centre earlier today and noticed that there were quite a lot of people now wearing masks outside - around the (not crowded) outdoor market, and whilst walking in-between shops on the not very crowded high street - many more than there had been last weekend. I couldn't work out if it was because they couldn't be bothered with all the putting on/taking off, or whether they were really anxious about being outdoors around people. Or, whether it was the next step in being a performatively "good citizen" - because you get noticed a lot more if you're outside. If its the last one, then that will be the next social media campaign...

ineedaholidaynow · 25/07/2020 19:21

Maybe people are trying not to touch their mask too often, if I am going to more than one shop and they are quite close to each other I wouldn't remove my mask between shops.

Ah bollocks, just booked a week in Spain in mid August. So annoying. I go back to work on the 1st which is about 10 days after we get back. My head isnt going to be pleased.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 25/07/2020 19:26

Why did they encourage holidays??

ineedaholidaynow · 25/07/2020 19:30

The economy, particularly airline business

thought that was an earbud to drown out the sounds of the mask marshals in supermarkets Grin

They are also selling full wetsuits, so if you donned mask and wetsuit you could hose yourself down with bleach when you got home.

justasking111 · 25/07/2020 19:32

I do not think I would self isolate when I got home, if you have a job to go back to you are going to go aren`t you.

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 25/07/2020 19:33

I’m happy to live on cheese & crackers (+tapas) twice a day for all eternity. It’s the fuckers I live with expect a “proper meal”. The have cooked more noodles than a Singaporean market stall holder. I do throw lots of fruit their way...

Sadly I suspect mask wearing when it’s not mandated is mostly performative and bugger all to do with not wanting to touch your face ... much of the reporting is now talking about wearing masks ‘in public’ - I very much fear that that’s the next farcical step in this shit show .. mandatory masks whenever you step outside your front door.

I think the thought processes go something like this ‘wearing a mask makes everyone safer therefore wearing a mask more makes it even safer!’ So you get people like the couple I saw on my dog walk this morning - 6:30am, in the middle of a wide open field, wearing masks and turning their backs on anyone coming within 10 metres of them....

Supermarketworker06 · 25/07/2020 19:52

Been off work on holiday this week, so missed the first day of mask wearing yesterday. Apparently it went ok, until a chap in a mask started having a go at the check out staff for not wearing a mask. Supervisor got involved, then floor manager, then management. Long story short, we've got to wear face coverings when not on the till behind the screens. I've heard Aldi staff have to wear them all the time, if not it's a disciplinary offence, anyone know if that's right?

justasking111 · 25/07/2020 19:53

In Spain lockdown regions people have been told to wear masks indoors if anyone visits them. Confused

PinkFondantFancy · 25/07/2020 20:02

@DrearyWallAntler re history - exactly! This is exactly what I keep banging on about but noone other than DH seems to get it and I get a lot of blank stares. It's depressing.

Cheese, crackers and tapas... my ideal menu. I wouldn’t cook if there was no one else in the house. Having said that I don’t cook anyway... DH does. If he didn’t, I’d eat cheese and crackers!

How does the situation Spain square with the Dementor salivating over how Spain did lockdown PROPERLY and people weren't allowed to even leave the houses and how everyone is wearing masks outside and it's amazing?

Spain dropped the ball and started LETTING PEOPLE OUT. Big mistake. They should still be locked up. Actually it’s our fault... they let the dirty Brits in and we reinfected them.
Drivingdownthe101 · 25/07/2020 20:15

Actually that should be the dirty English I guess.

My son works for the architects looking after Yorkshire Aldi (I know I know).

He has been told this and that they have to wear them for site visits. I even argued with him as Aldi have been pretty good so far.

Re cheese and biscuits They are my evening meal 3 or 4 maybe 5 nights a week. I live alone so I have what I want. (I do have cucumber, tomatoes, peppers etc with it.)

Littlebelina · 25/07/2020 20:24

I'm guessing what ever reason the dementors come up with for the Spain outbreaks it'll be something we are doing worse and more outbreaks will be coming our way soon

BogRollBOGOF · 25/07/2020 20:25

We went out for the afternoon to a town at the far end of the county. Most time was spent watching the DCs take turns on a zip wire.

I did remind DH to take a face rag with him, and put a Buff in my hair...
We passed a Mountain Warehouse so I've bought DS1 a bigger coat to get him through the winter as the one he was wearing is a nice fit at the moment without much spare.
If mask wearing is a performance, please can I be nominated for a Bafta in comedy/ farce. Within 2 minutes I'd stripped off superflous clothing, the Buff kept falling off, but hey ho it's fresher air. I was clearly struggling by the till near the exit as the manager serving asked if I have asthma (I have been to the GP to query this over the years but it's never been confirmed in a non triggery setting). The staff were pleasant though. A lot of stock was on sale so DS2 picked up a couple of items too.

I'm not buying the "you'll soon get used to it!" as my glasses still annoy me after 22 years Grin

DH nearly ploughed into a mask wearer on the street as we came around a corner and I alerted him to the shit strewn all over the place so he was trying to dodge his size 12s around that.
I'm not convinced that it was dog either as there was a lot of sweetcorn in it Envy

Definitely not rushing off to any big centres/ stores that need prolonged time. The outside air is already humid enough to be draining work.

Yes... read the ‘are we 2 weeks behind Spain and France’ thread!
BakewellTarts · 25/07/2020 20:33

I LOATHE masks. I have been wearing the rotten things and none of the helpful how not to get fiogged up glasses tips works. To make it even worse the blooming straps got tangled up in my glasses so I couldn't take the thing off when leaving the store.

Sorry grumpy today. I won't get used to them I will just minimise all situations where I need to use them. As to the economy well i will be very strategic where I go and spend money but it will either be essential or enjoyable and if a business can't deliver either of those it will not benefit from me.

BakewellTarts · 25/07/2020 20:39

Masks coming to offices too apparently. Hmm

I'm in the relatively priviledged position of not being forced back to the office but if / when I choose to stop wfh it will be when I and the company I work for benefit. If I can achieve the same productivty at home whats the point of a commute?

So no Zoom / Teams shit. No masks. No queues for the loo. Boiling water for tea not the rubbish coffee app that can't make tea. Overall if its like wfh but worse why?

I will go back for team meetings, client meetings, collaboration. Not on the cards at the moment and can't see that changing in 2020.

And don't forget they all wear their masks properly at all times and NEVER complain about it.

I don't think it's the English to blame - looks more like migrant workers and family gatherings in the cities. Along with Nightclubs - and although the Brits may be part of that, why open bloody night clubs?

Having said that, deaths haven't gone up. I'd like to know if ITU bed use has gone up (because deaths lag behind) or is it that young people are getting it and recovering.

Pre vaccination, measle parties and chickenpox parties were definitely a thing, because younger people suffered less and were less poorly.

Drivingdownthe101 · 25/07/2020 20:45

Oh no I didn’t mean we are to blame, but that will be a dementor spin on the situation I’m sure.
