What tip have you heard about and been incredulous when it actually works?

I saw on Twitter that filling a ziplock bag with water and a few coins and hanging it in a doorway/placing it on the doorstep will keep flies out. It seemed such a bizarre suggestion that I thought I would try it and can confirm it works. I've also hung one near the bins and there hasn't been any flies around for a week.
Are there any other tips that I should know?

Two that blow my mind:

Spread ketchup on copper, leave it a bit, wipe with cloth/rinse off. removes tarnish!

Line a plastic tub with tinfoil. Add a good handful of salt. Pour in boiling water from kettle. Drop silverware in (carefully). Watch the tarnish disappear like magic in front of your eyes.

@PixelatedLunchbox the ketchup and copper trick has certainly been used to clean very dirty and tarnished, ancient, swords etc in some museum collections (although I'm remembering someone whose favourite concoction was based mainly around brown sauce, among other things, which had the edge on ketchup in his opinion!)

Any tips for getting rid of ants? I've never had a problem with them before but in the past month they're all over my garden and now they're getting in to my house, found one in my DC bed this evening!!!!
Make a spray of diluted white vinegar and water, and spray it around where they're coming in the house. They don't like the acid - maybe they think some other ants are already there? No idea but it works (until you wash the floor, then you have to repeat, but I've found that eventually they do give up)

Unused lemon half’s in dishwasher to freshen and help with lime scale

Vick's Vapour Rub for toenail fungus. I had it for three years and it kept coming back until I read about this and tried it. Completely disappeared after a couple of months of applying it every 2 or 3 days and never recurred. Cross my heart, it works!
Ooh, I am trying this right now. Only 1 week in but this has given me hope!

@summerfish
Thanks for the tip, I was planning on trying that one tomorrow! Think i'll give it a miss!

On the ants front - try to work out where there are coming in from and use a little bit of bathroom sealent to seal the hole - cheap and no germ warfare

As we speak I have pieces of banana skin taped to my verruca x 2 ... it's a weird sensation Confused

Short of cutting my foot off though I'm willing to try anything. Does anyone know why it works?

TMI OVERSHARE ALERT!

Take care with the duct tape remedy btw ... I tried that and gave up after a few weeks when my foot started to pong. I think the lack of oxygen to that particular part was actually turning the flesh necrotic! And I had a really weird hole appear. It weirded me out so I gave up. A week later the buggering verruca came back Confused

Boiling water in a saucepan, scrunch foil and drop in with silverware and boil till all the tarnish goes off.. You will see the foil changing colour slowly.
I was really impressed with the results. No scrubbing, no scratches

So many useful tips here.

So, the verdict seems to be,
use dishwasher tablets for hard stains on clothes and detergent powder for burnt vessels

Is it wipe on, put a sock on, go to sleep ?
houseRefurb · 20/07/2020 18:36

Those with toe bug problems,
I had some thing similar on one of my fingers, tried a few different things, nothing worked.
One day, kept the finger dipped in ACV (it was one of those spiced ACVs, with turmeric etc)
And it was sorted pretty much straight away

sueelleker · 20/07/2020 19:31

@tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz Wasn't the hole where the verruca came out on the tape then?

SunsetBeetch · 20/07/2020 20:20

Apply unscented roll-on antiperspirant on skin irritation caused by hair removal, really calms it down. Also apply a layer to any sensitive spots directly after hair removal to lessen any likely irritation.

Also, coca cola in great for removing rust.

wannabebetter · 20/07/2020 20:36

When lining a baking tray or cake tin with grease proof paper, scrunch the paper up first then open out & use - it fits far better and stops lifting up!

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 20/07/2020 20:38

Do you know sue, I hadn't thought of that and didn't notice anything on the underside of the tape so it's a possibility.

Although it did come back Confused
