What tip have you heard about and been incredulous when it actually works?

I saw on Twitter that filling a ziplock bag with water and a few coins and hanging it in a doorway/placing it on the doorstep will keep flies out. It seemed such a bizarre suggestion that I thought I would try it and can confirm it works. I've also hung one near the bins and there hasn't been any flies around for a week.
Are there any other tips that I should know?

Once youve walked off a beach , sprinkle talc over your feet, the sand will just fall off.

One for home bakers:

1ml of water weighs 1g.

Weighing water is more accurate than trying to reading the volume from the printed scale on a jug.

Karcher window vac, only way to wash windows..“

Or Minky window cloth if you can’t afford a Karcher, the green bumpy one. Run under tap, wring out, no detergent just wipe over windows, mirrors, shower screens, tiles, whatever. Leave to dry, completely clean and streak free. Works every time, first time.

Use rain x on bathroom mirrors to stop them misting up when you shower. It’s brilliant.

@FromBigCityToTinyVillage, my DD dyed her hair bright pink a couple of weeks ago. Her natural colour is light blonde, so it was extremely vivid. She was starting a new job last week and had tried washing it out, but it was stubborn (although non-permanent). She got some of this and I swear her hair was turning back blonde as soon as she smoothed it on. If your DD has long hair then it's best get someone else to help her as otherwise the hair she treats first will end up lighter than the bit she does last. It got rid of every last bit of pink.

Now I'm in a quandary, if I use the only coppers I have (two 1p coins) in a bag at the door, how will I clean my taps? Grin

FoodologistGirl · 20/07/2020 13:04

The best mozzies spray I’ve every used wasn’t even an insect repellent anyway. The Avon skin so soft is amazing. It smells lovely and isnt toxic also It’s very cheap. I was told by a cyclist who used to get bitten badly while in Scotland. He told me the army use it too. Hmm I didn’t believe him until I tried it. The only place I got bitten was a tiny bit I forgot inside my trousers. Bare arms etc were safe. I used to be so bitten And react badly but not know. Smile

Destroyedpeople · 20/07/2020 13:14

Oh skin so soft by Avon. ..yes..people also use that on their horses

I leave my jewellery overnight in a glass of gin or vodka, makes diamonds gleam.

/// This, and Bonnet, are the most rock 'n roll idea and individual I've ever seen on MN! I imagine Faye Dunaway doing this after a night partying with Warren Beaty Grin

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 20/07/2020 13:54

2nd most rock 'n roll thing is how on earth you get suntan cream on car bodywork to begin with Grin

Vick's Vapour Rub for toenail fungus. I had it for three years and it kept coming back until I read about this and tried it. Completely disappeared after a couple of months of applying it every 2 or 3 days and never recurred. Cross my heart, it works!

@olbndansmummy

White spirit on kitchen roll for removing sticky residue on plastics or laminate floor, only a tiny bit should shift it, don't pour it on like I was told to do!
I used a hairdryer on my freezer and basically fucked it.

The insulating foam inside the frame (who knew?) swelled up and sort of melted and stopped the door closing properly.

If you still do it, resist the temptation to use a high heat. Wasn't covered by a warranty because of my own stupidity.
@FromBigCityToTinyVillage. Would tomato ketchup help? I know it gets chlorine-related green out of blond hair.
It's actually worked !!she put it on dry hair and left it 20 minutes then did her normal shampoo and conditioner! Thanks so much !

ladykuga · 20/07/2020 15:04

@nunnun I second that! Vicks for fungus really does work.

Thanks ,but she tried the tomato ketchup and it worked as bleach hair dye was our next go too but don't need to now 😊

Blow drying itchy insect bites with a hairdryer.

Got the tip off here when I was on holiday and covered in bites.

It works a treat but you look like a nutter !

Stifledlife · 20/07/2020 15:28

If your kids play cricket and you have lost the will to live trying to get their cricket whites white again, pop them in a hot wash with a dishwasher tablet (not washing powder).

It was a revelation for me.

I tried the twopence on limescale and it's amazing! I tried with a scourer too, just to see if it was my elbow grease, and the twopence piece won by a considerable distance.

lightlypoached · 20/07/2020 15:30

To open a very stiff lid on a jar, bash the edges of the lid with a knife to make dents in the lid, it will then open easily. Didn't believe it until I tried it.

sueelleker · 20/07/2020 15:38

FromBigCityToTinyVillage Brilliant! It was just a guess, so I'm glad it worked.

Lurchermom · 20/07/2020 15:45

Put a wooden spoon over the top of a pan to stop it boiling over. My mom taught me this one, saved me from burnt water stains many times.

Anyone know if this stops your glasses misting up with you wear a face mask ??

@HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime

Not really a tip (thanks for using that word instead of the modern hack) But build a pond and wildlife will come.

We built a pond at the start of lockdown and I've been sat outside today and my garden is teeming with so many different creatures, most that I don't recognise from the previous 10 years I've lived there. I never thought they would come so quickly, frog arrived within a week. Some how water snails turned up and now weve had the biggest, most beautiful dragonflys whizzing around today.

We even got fish in ours. We think a heron must have visited and dropped a pregnant one in(some sort of koi carp things in orange/gold/white), because we definitely didn't add any fish. Unless someone dumped a couple in there when we weren't looking (front garden)
safariboot · 20/07/2020 16:25

Maybe I always see the worst in humanity, but someone dumping their unwanted pet fish in the pond seems the more likely scenario. It's fortunate they thrived.

@ladykuga

I can confirm that all weeds on my driveway are dead. Thanks to all who gave such a simple tip. Can now get rid of all my Weedol. Thanks
Erm. I tried this on dandelions and it's very much temporary. They come back. Might work on annuals.
