No, my elderly father had an Angina attack today because the store was too hot and he couldn't breathe through his mask. It should never be compulsory to wear one

Villains in bad melodramas used to be unmasked at the denouement I believe.

Not sure that adds anything to the thread, I'm just thinking about the various uses of the word "mask" and its derivatives!

DominaShantotto · 11/07/2020 19:17

Just been at a BBQ with one guest there masked up. Well when not eating burgers and fiddling with it!

PickAChew · 11/07/2020 19:21

Wonder if this is an acceptable face covering.

Must be if it's Korea. That's a virtuous country Grin

Had the kids hair cut the other day, barbers wearing visors but no requirement for the client to. It was actually all quite normal, apart from the visors- quick wipe down with disinfectant spray between clients, and single use plastic gowns that made me sad, but otherwise pretty much the same. I have an appointment for next month with my hairdresser and will be charged £5 for PPE and do have to wear a mask. I think the guidelines are a visor for the hairdresser and no mask necessary for the client, but I guess some have decided to anyway.

Paradiseinportugal · 11/07/2020 19:40

It's about time that I had another haircut, I got one on May 6th, that was when Portugal started opening up again. I wore a mask but it was a lot cooler then. I'm not sure if I'll be as comfortable now.

SomewhereEast · 11/07/2020 19:45

We went to Castle Howard today and it was just....actually pretty normal? The massive new adventure playground was open & full of children & it was just really nice.

wanderings · 11/07/2020 19:50

@Orangeblossom78 I didn't hear the programme, but with what you said about today's Any Answers:
"Masks are a sign of weakness and fear": I'm glad to hear that view being aired.
"We need a climate of fear": well, Boris the clown knows that. It's what he and his merry men have been masterminding since March, while pretending they're on our side. It's why they're desperate to get people shopping again, project fear worked too well.

letsgomaths · 11/07/2020 19:58

Today, I passed through a village which was having a garden scarecrow competition! There were many others, some of them reflecting the time we're in.

“The catastrophe never arrived. As in most other European countries, Sweden saw a peak in Covid-19 deaths in the first half of April followed by a steady decline. Shown on a graph, the pattern of mortality is indistinguishable from that of many countries that locked down. Its daily death toll rarely exceeded double figures and has been below 30 since mid-June. As in Britain, half the deaths were in care homes and two-thirds of those who died were aged 80 or over.

Once it became clear that their apocalyptic prophecy had failed, critics of the Swedish approach turned to post hoc rationalisation. They cited low population density and a high rate of single person households as the explanation for Sweden’s lucky escape. Some claimed that social distancing was a natural part of Swedish culture or that Swedes did not talk enough for virus droplets to be transmitted. Some of this was true and much of it was nonsense, but none of it had been mentioned in March when Sweden was said to be doomed.

It is now considered gauche to compare Sweden to Britain, Italy, Spain or any other country that had a higher death rate. You are only allowed to compare it to its immediate neighbours where the death rate is lower. Mention the UK or, heaven forbid, Belgium (which locked down a week before the UK and has the highest COVID-19 death rate in the world) and you will be told that they should have locked down sooner. The proposition becomes unfalsifiable. Heads they win, tails you lose. “

^that sums up talking to a dementor - heads they win tails you lose. They are such believers.

Anyway it’s a good article ... www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/07/11/second-wave-covid-swedish-approach-will-have-right-along/#comment

The rewriting of history - they predicted that suppressing it in the summer would lead to a peak in the autumn unless there’s a vaccine (which there won’t be) - now if/when there is it won’t be because that’s exactly what the model showed would happen it’ll be our fault. The shifting goals posts - from protect health services, set up test & trace & good test capacity, develop some treatments ... to eradicate the virus & DEFEAT death. So depressing, it’s like wading through treacle.

torydeathdrug · 11/07/2020 20:16

(No vaccine by autumn I’m reasonably optimistic they’ll be several eventually!)

HairyFloppins · 11/07/2020 20:18

The 2nd wavers are creaming themselves over today’s figures.

PickAChew · 11/07/2020 20:20

We went to Hardwick Park, this afternoon, and the play areas were open for the first time. I haven't heard so much noise in months. It was glorious!

torydeathdrug · 11/07/2020 20:24

Ha! Well so far there have been only 30 odd positive tests in England on the 10th ... that’ll increase over the next few days but like the deaths cases are when reported not actually on the day they are announced (of the ones today 760 odd were between 4th & 9th).

Not sure what’s up with the deaths only 39 in hospital (less than last week) & they were spread out over 10 days. The rest were other sites ... quite possibly missed from weeks ago. Meh, the averages are still coming down.

TheOrchidKiller · 11/07/2020 20:31

Letsgomaths those are lovely scarecrows. They look happy.

I've seen garden gnomes in masks. There's a wooden sculpture near us of a Victorian lady. She's often sporting items of clothing. Last year she was wearing a factory hairnet for weeks, at Christmas she has a Santa hat. Noticed she was wearing a woolly scarf and a surgical mask recently, but the mask disappeared quite quickly.

(Not guilty)

Dowser · 11/07/2020 20:32

@PickAChew
Oh excellent
Hardwick Park kept us going throughout lockdown..first went April 13 when it was 7 degrees, pretty deserted but not too cold.

It was only about 25 minutes from us. Mr Dowsers birthday and I was determined he was doing something on it and I didn’t give a flying fuck if I was breaking any roolz.

Dowser · 11/07/2020 20:32

@PickAChew

Was the cafe and toilets open?

Teateaandmoretea · 11/07/2020 20:36

The death figures are bollocks no more or less. The infection figures are slightly more worrying but without context (ie how many people were tested and why) you can’t really compare to other days. Tbh I’m sick of this daily numbers saga, if they actually want people to get on with their lives it needs to move to weekly alongside ons etc.

Dowser · 11/07/2020 20:38

This is the only mask I want to wear
