Sorry it’s a bit of a lame title.

Happy Super Saturday anti-Ds. I have a haircut booked for next Friday and have re-engaged my cleaner, which brings me joy despite the fact that I am languishing with a bad cold.

Where would you all go for a week in Europe at the end of August with two DC 5 and under? We've decided that we do want to give the DC a week of holiday that includes some beaches and pools, preferably not too expensive and needing to be self catering. We did Eurocamp in a mobile home on the Riviera previously which I liked but DH was a bit less impressed.

TheGreatWave · 04/07/2020 13:51

@Mrsfrumble

I think masks in the US are also very politicised. Generally refusers are Trump supporters, so anyone who doesn’t want to be so aligned not only feels obliged to wear a mask, but to shout about it too.*
 • I’m not an expert, but we used to live over there in a very “red” state so I’m quite interested in how things are playing out.
Ahh, that's really interesting and could go someway to explain the extensive posting of masks memes.
Nihiloxica · 04/07/2020 13:52

@justasking111

Wait till the scots and welsh set about you. Me I live 45 mins from Holyhead seriously considering hopping on the boat to Ireland, I am 3/4 mick as they say
Oh Jesus, the Irish are just as bad.

Amusingly demanding the NI border be closed mere weeks after insisting it was uncloseable and closing it would be a political abomination that undermined the Good Friday Agreement (which it would be).

Apparently Covid can achieve what Brexit could not. Hmm

Who says they are 3/4 mick? Grin Definitely don't say that in Dublin.

HesterShaw1 · 04/07/2020 13:53

@Mrsfrumble

HesterShaw excuse my ignorance but what’s on the A30 that we need to fuck off from? Also thanks to your username I picture you as bemasked anyway.
That actress was FAR too pretty to play Hester!

Hester Shaw is a lean, mean fighting machine, oh with a hideous scar! I'm lean...but that's as far as it goes!

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 04/07/2020 13:57

I was in a tiny off the beaten track restaurant in Wallonia - only about 16 seats. My dad and uncle got progressively more drunk and offensive. Didn’t bother me as they were speaking in Doric.

‘Cept the french speakers next to us revealed an Aberdonian in their midst.

Have also watched my Bus driver in northern Alberta have tears streaming down his face as he recounted the argument a German couple had just had.

Never underestimate the language abilities of those around you.

justasking111 · 04/07/2020 13:57

@Nihiloxica well I am going to disagree here. Irish is a real language only kept alive by hedge schools, ditto welsh "Welsh not" rules which were banned in both cases by the english. I think both nations have been very forgiving compared to the BLM movement.

Please do not look down your nose at minority languages.

BubbleIsNotAFuckingVerb · 04/07/2020 13:58

The ONE time I have even considered using my ID badge to queue jump at Tesco, I dithered in the queue for 40 minutes, then by the time I thought "no actually, I really will be late for work in a minute and everyone else queueing looks patient and/or of retirement age so probably aren't".... the person I would have gone in front of was in a wheelchair. Bang went that idea 😂 I can imagine the anti-NHS post on Facebook now....

@RubberDinghyRapids Did you see that MN thread at the start of all this where someone wearing an NHS lanyard was also beckoned to the front of the queue and all the crowd clapped as she went past them. In fairness to OP she was posting to say how embarrassing it was Grin

Mascotte · 04/07/2020 14:04

I've reached a low point: waiting in a queue for the tip to dispose of my murderous lockdown cardboard so that DS and I can continue to fit into the house.

HesterShaw1 · 04/07/2020 14:04

There was an article in the (forgive me) Guardian the other day about Scots Gaelic. It mentioned how much better Welsh is going than Scots and Irish Gaelic.

You will hear people chattering away in Welsh in lots of places. It's still very much a living language.

Mrsfrumble · 04/07/2020 14:04

@HesterShaw1 yeah I made the mistake of seeing the trailer for the film before I read the book, so I couldn’t shake the face of the pretty actress, even when it didn’t match the description in the book. It is annoying when that happens though; I couldn’t watch the recent adaptation of Normal People because the actors they cast didn’t look anything like how I’d imagined them from the book. Marianne was far to pretty and Connell wasn’t pretty enough!

RubberDinghyRapids · 04/07/2020 14:04

Ha! The utter height of cringe. I have a few colleagues who a) were stupid enough to go to Tesco on that first Sunday (totally predictable carnage, did they not realise how big an employer it is?) and b) have had free flowers/verbal thanks/extra discount thrust upon them in shops.... when I took the piss they all claim to have 'forgotten' to remove their lanyards. Bollocks.

Don't get me wrong, major props to those truly at the Covid frontline but the ones I know don't even have patient contact. And we're not general health so we're at less risk than the supermarket employees.

justasking111 · 04/07/2020 14:05

DIL went to Aber falls, a long trek up to a great fall when it rains. The N Wales tourism van blocked her path, telling her she was not allowed, where was she from anyway. She is local. DIL retreated, OH incandescent with rage the tourist plods are not entitled to do this he says. Well as from Monday we can asshole. Who gave tourism this much misguided power.

Mascotte · 04/07/2020 14:06

The summer death festival should be headlined by "Sadly Dead and the Anti-Dementors."

Loving the random facts on here too and the American mask wearing stuff.

RubberDinghyRapids · 04/07/2020 14:06

@Mrsfrumble Have you heard the Normal People bits on Dead Ringers? Grin

justasking111 · 04/07/2020 14:09

n wales tourism not in line with the boss then

NothingIsWrong · 04/07/2020 14:10
@justasking111 I have lived in Wales all my life and even speak Welsh fluently. I don't have a Welsh accent when I speak English though so people often assume I'm an incomer. (Sometimes I let them right up until the point they say something embarrassing in Welsh in front of me.)
My husband is the same. Grew up in Bucks in a Welsh speaking household. So he's pure Aylesbury in English, but he is fluent Welsh.

His favourite game is taking me into pubs in Wales, speaking English. Waiting for them to switch to Welsh and usually make a few disparaging comments and then him switching to Welsh with his brother. Some of the faces you see....

trappedsincesundaymorn · 04/07/2020 14:39

I always remember many years ago being with some friends in a bar 1 night. Two men on the table opposite were openly discussing us and generally being dickish using BSL. Imagine their faces as I signed, "don't know what you 2 are bragging about because none of us on this table would be interested if our lives depended on it. Enjoy your drinks arsehats" We could practically feel the heat from their red faces.

rookiemere · 04/07/2020 14:42

Just back from a murderous trip to the zoo and dropping DS off to slaughter his friends at the football pitches.

I feel absolutely exhausted with sensory overload, after so much nothing for so long.I went with DH and a couple of friends and without toddlers or dementory teens we had a fantastic trip even if most of the animals were asleep.

It was a bit different from normal - inside bits were closed so we couldn't see the koalasSad. Pretty much all the food concessions were shut, which I thought was odd because they're outdoor booths.

There was also a one way system that a very harassed looking lady tried to insist we were going to wrong way round, I went into my usual modus operandi and apologised but my two friends were having none of it and told her we were in fact going the correct way as pointed out by the attendant. She stomped off growling "This time" and was heard muttering to the poor person accompanying her, that this was the reason she refused to go into shops. What on earth did she expect on the first weekend day the zoo was open ?

justasking111 · 04/07/2020 14:42

That is funny my DS knows sign language he would have loved this opportunity. Yeah there are knuckle draggers in Wales who feel superior speaking welsh, who left school asap, never thought to take education seriously and leave the area, but you know what their lifestyles as limited as they are financially can be envied by some.

Ibake · 04/07/2020 14:45

Afternoon all, gosh, a bit of reading to get through! Think @mascotte might just have hit upon the next thread name "sadly dead and the anti-dementors"

@trapped well done to Mr Trapped. Luckily high end = too rich so you'll be self limiting.

I have a confession for which you will all, quite rightly, judge me. Decided to watch 365 Days last night after hearing the furore about it. So, on the one hand: shit plot, shit acting, misogynistic, anti-feminist, appalling glamorisation of rape fantasy etc etc etc. On the other hand, quite titillating, very easy on the eye, fantasy when reality currently more than a bit shit. I know, I know I'll go and hang my head in shame. Think it was the lowest scored thing I've ever watched on IMDB. However, in my defence, I'm not the only one judging by the viewing figures. And, he is, I might have already mentioned(!), very easy on the eye. Anyway, remember the thread rules, we're nice to each other on here and respect different views - or am I pushing that too far with this confession?!

Drivingdownthe101 · 04/07/2020 14:46

DH isn’t from a Welsh speaking part of wales, and also hasn’t lived there since he was a very small child, but has taught himself welsh over the past few years as he thinks it’s important (and was a bit bored after we had DC and our social lives were a bit curtailed Grin). He’s teaching DC1 now.
He has a knack for languages generally though, he speaks Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese too.

Ibake · 04/07/2020 14:48

Now @trapped has made me feel even worse. Whilst I'm typing my confession to an evening of low brow soft porn she's typing about being fluent in BSL. FML

justasking111 · 04/07/2020 14:49

Well I am watching Justified on amazon, an absolute escapist hoot, the men are gentlemen just before they punch holes in each other with lead. The women generally kick ass also handy with a gun. They eat such a bad diet, drink too much, all in all lots of fun if not politically correct Grin

Mascotte · 04/07/2020 14:51

@justasking111 I love justified! Have a massive crush on Raylan and ended up channelling Ava"s outfits when I first watched it 😂

Ibake · 04/07/2020 14:52

At least it gets 8.6 on IMDB @justasking111. 365 days - 3.4!!
