Sorry it’s a bit of a lame title.

@Ibake

Now *@trapped* has made me feel even worse. Whilst I'm typing my confession to an evening of low brow soft porn she's typing about being fluent in BSL. FML
That did make me chuckle.

Don't feel bad. It's only because my best friend from childhood is profoundly deaf so I learnt it with her. Truth be told we used it as a way of talking about the people who annoyed us, so as a child I was no better than those blokes in the bar. Grin Grin

TheGreatWave · 04/07/2020 14:55

Just on the way to the coast, going to get some fresh air into the DC even if it kills me.

However we took the wrong lane in the roadworks and are therefore taking a very scenic route.

Mascotte · 04/07/2020 14:56

There might be a market for low brow soft porn in BSL...

Ibake · 04/07/2020 14:57

One would hope @Mascotte that your fingers were otherwise occupied...

Nihiloxica · 04/07/2020 15:00
@Nihiloxica well I am going to disagree here. Irish is a real language only kept alive by hedge schools, ditto welsh "Welsh not" rules which were banned in both cases by the english. I think both nations have been very forgiving compared to the BLM movement.

Please do not look down your nose at minority languages.
Oh no, I think you misunderstood me. Smile

I'm an Irish speaker. I dislike people using their (usually shite) Irish to be rude about people in other countries, as if they are using a secret code and not one of the oldest languages in Europe.

Irish and Gaelic are both living languages, although we do look with admiration at Wales and try to emulate the success with Welsh.

Our p-Celtic cousins are doing well Smile

I love watching a late night sweary film with the BSL interpreter in the bottom corner of the screen. Imagine being paid to sign, "yipee kiaaay motherfucker!". Living the dream, living the dream. Grin

Ibake · 04/07/2020 15:04

I'm such a dick @mascotte, I thought you meant the actors would be signing, hence the fingers comment and then realised, thanks to @trapped, that you probably meant there would be a BSL person bottom right. Fuck, I clearly dumbed down more than I thought last night.

Mascotte · 04/07/2020 15:07

😂 I think there's a market for both options tbh

trappedsincesundaymorn · 04/07/2020 15:09

Nihiloxica · 04/07/2020 15:13

Have any of you seen the BSL/ASL interpreters doing Grime and Hip Hop gigs?

Amazing artistry. So brilliant in musical forms built from spoken word and samples.

In NI we need two interpreters because both ISL and BSL are used here.

Could be worse they could be on Nicola's daily show, though they could just slip in what they actually think.
BogRollBOGOF · 04/07/2020 15:17

I know BSL for "Woah! Check out the bumps on them, they're HUGE!!!"
BSL is not subtle and aquanatal was followed by the Royal School for the Deaf's swimming lesson Grin Fortunately I was already aware that BSL is not a subtle language and the community is quite blunt/ direct (To be fair, mine was a spectaculatly humungous bump and we were all 3rd tri).

We've got the largest Deaf community outside London, and it's not unusual seeing BSL being used around town.

One of the early schools I worked in had enhanced provision for hearing impairment and I had a couple of the classes with that year's HI cohort. It was fantastic experience for developing my non-verbal communication generally. Occasionally I didn't have a BSL interpreter and one pupil was profoundly deaf, but I did manage to get enough information to her. If I'd been there longer I'd have been very interested in BSLcourses.

hashtagbollocks · 04/07/2020 15:18

@HesterShaw1

do you mean as in telling tourists to fuck off?
that's nice of them. tossers

trappedsincesundaymorn · 04/07/2020 15:18

TheGreatWave

I think the temptation to sign "the woman's an idiot and a complete control freak" must be huge. I can imagine the "chat" now " hey Nicola if you want me to sign exactly what you say and not what I think...pay up and add another 0 on the end, cheers".

Ibake · 04/07/2020 15:19

How cool is she @nihiloxica? CV - signs for Stormzy, bet her careers advisor never came up with that option at school.

BogRollBOGOF · 04/07/2020 15:19

I can remember seeing the same interpreter popping up on heavy adult TV and CBeebies Grin

My friend whiled away many a night feed watching music channels and signed videos.

I know! She is so cool. 😊

This clip is amazing. It's the first time the band had ever seen it being done.

Orangeblossom78 · 04/07/2020 15:31

Just spent a couple of hours pottering round the shops here, all seems pretty much back to normal now thankfully, bumped into Mil and her friend and had a coffee in a nice cafe, no mask wearing there and all seemed normal too! very reassuring.

I only saw a couple of mask wearers, one was a man on his own standing near a shop and another a lady and children in baby Gap all masked up but that was very unusual. Otherwise quite like a normal Saturday and good to see most shops and cafes quite busy.

Ibake · 04/07/2020 15:31

That's just joyous. I do like where these threads take us. We've gone down so many rabbit holes the AD's practically live in a Warren.

Sorry, meant to use quotes. Previous comment was re the Pearl Jam vid

trappedsincesundaymorn · 04/07/2020 15:37

I'm very jealous she got to dance with Eddie...he is a god among men.

For the reading pleasure of the Welsh ADs - a doctor, yes a real live NHS hero, saying it's time for lockdown to end and kids to go back to school. www.walesonline.co.uk/news/education/school-re-opening-wales-coronavirus-18535188?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=wales_main

TheFirstRuleOfADClub · 04/07/2020 15:42

Isn't the BSL thing interesting, I know very few people, outside the deaf community, who sign and yet here we are on this thread! I think it would be great if more people learnt it as it makes life so much easier for BSL users, especially with the masks, especially on public transport (although one of the exemptions is for being with someone who is lip reading). It's such a useful skill, I wish it would be a language option in schools.
