Sorry it’s a bit of a lame title.

My guess is they've shoved in the Pillar 2 figures from back along in response to the people asking for an accurate reflection.

BogRollBOGOF · 03/07/2020 10:05

There is a creeping normality trickling through threads where people who don't post here make similar points. There are cycles of dementoring over things like beaches, schools guidance and I'm sure pubs... where the furore builds up for a few days then fizzles until the next trigger, but considering the levels of terror, and strict unnecessary roolz that were endemic without many dissenting voices 3 months ago, the balance is creeping to being more realistic and measured. Also AIBU/ Chat are getting more normalised with more dementory posts sticking to Coronavirus. The odd nitpicker is getting shot down pretty quickly when they try to skew a random AIBU to the roolz when that was not the point.

The key thing that pulled us together over 15 000 posts is not an echo chamber, but we can listen and discuss civilly even if we don't concur exactly.

Drivingdownthe101 · 03/07/2020 10:06

I think it’s something to do with now being able to split care home/community cases and deaths by regions when they couldn’t before.

Orangeblossom78 · 03/07/2020 10:06

"The methodology for reporting positive cases changed on 2 July 2020 to remove duplicates within and across pillars 1 and 2, to ensure that a person who tests positive is only counted once"

coronavirus.data.gov.uk/

Could this be it perhaps

NUFC69 · 03/07/2020 10:06

Morning all. I see according to the DT that Scotland and Wales may not necessarily do the air bridge thing which England has agreed with other nations. They will do what is right for them. Shock it was suggested that Scottish holiday makers will make a dash to Newcastle and fly from there. What has the world come to?

In good news I have booked for Wallington Hall on Monday and on Wednesday afternoon we are going to visit friends at the coast. She is shielding and has suggested the garden or the kitchen if the weather is bad. Whilst I have been in touch with them I haven't liked to suggest a meeting as she is vulnerable, so was really pleased to get the invitation.

Teateaandmoretea · 03/07/2020 10:06

I think the local figures used to just contain pillar 1, and the National includes both 1 and 2. So the local figures are being updated. It’s hard to work out because there is so much nonsense being posted on Twitter.

Allflightscancelled · 03/07/2020 10:06

Thanks @Ibake and @Orangeblossom78. It's bloody baffling isn't it? If they're going to change the way they report they need to be clear about what's changed, and why! Because otherwise the stats are just pointless.

ineedaholidaynow · 03/07/2020 10:07

I thought you had to give contact details when you go in a pub anyway

Allflightscancelled · 03/07/2020 10:07

And it smacks of scare tactics to change this now, without explanation, just when people are rubbing their hands with glee and looking forward to getting out and about some more Angry

Drivingdownthe101 · 03/07/2020 10:08

@ineedaholidaynow

I thought you had to give contact details when you go in a pub anyway
Yeah but without having to show ID I guess you can put whatever you want down!
Orangeblossom78 · 03/07/2020 10:09

I think it's a bit like OCD BogRoll, a compulsive need to control stuff around it perhaps.

Teateaandmoretea · 03/07/2020 10:10

Because otherwise the stats are just pointless.

But like those additional PHE sadly deaths which Oxford university are critiquing (and their point has been wilfully misinterpreted by the Times who have an idiotic dementorish article titled something like ‘death rate has flattened out’

Dowser · 03/07/2020 10:16

Going to dentist to sort out smashed tooth
Tired too, not slept well
It’s going to be one of those days

iamapixie · 03/07/2020 10:16

@Ibake @NannyPhlegm
Interesting isn't it. I also sometimes have doubts about my position in light of most of the world going down broadly the same path.
Fundamentally though plenty of people are doing extremely well out of lockdown. Amazon is the obvious one - $11,000 per second on the back of lockdown - but there are so many others from industrial farming and food processing to plastics to big pharma etc. Share funds are having a great time because of course it's the perfect time to play the markets - so many shares are so cheap if you can stomach a bit of risk.
So whilst 'ordinary people' (hate that expression but don't know how else to put it) are suffering financially, a lot of the lockdown costs will not be borne by those with the ear of government.
I might be sounding a bit 'tin hat'?! I'm not at all like that but I do think that many global corporations are successful with very good reason, namely that they're incredibly good at seeing a market opportunity and exploiting it.

Supermarketworker06 · 03/07/2020 10:19

Wiltshire/ Somerset border here.

Had a real down day on Wednesday, not like me at all. Better on Thursday, even better today as I'm seeing the grandchildren today. Can't wait to cuddle them but my daughter is still a bit twitchy about that. Fair enough, where I work, I'm more of a risk to them than the other way round I suppose but oh I can't wait!

Ibake · 03/07/2020 10:19

I know we've said it many times on here but the media have so much to answer for right now. Cases in Cheshire East have dropped massively but my local paper leads with 'while cases have fallen the virus is still more common here than in other parts of the country'. And we all know most people only read the headlines. If you actually read the article I find the numbers pretty reassuring but that doesn't make people be good and STAY AT HOME does it?

Bollss · 03/07/2020 10:19

Our cases have gone up from 305 to 653. More than doubled. Guess it is pillar 2. Still, it's only 0.3 of the population.

Allflightscancelled · 03/07/2020 10:23

Thread moves so fast! Thanks also to everyone else who's contributed about the change in numbers. Driving Orangeblossom and Tea I think you have found the answers.

Really, they need to make it a bit more transparent Angry

Mascotte · 03/07/2020 10:28

@Ibake I see your point and I do reflect a lot on whether I'm right or the dementors are. For me it comes back to the fact that I'd rather take risks and lead a full life than hide away and fo nothing. It's partly because I'm a bit mental anyway, and have tried to change my whole life recently to avoid lonely misery and it's all back. I see my child suffering because of all this and there's still nothing of benefit to him open here. And I did used to have a bit of health anxiety and I can't let that come back, so would rather just press on.

I'm also naturally rebellious and have no time for being told what to do by the state. And scared about how easy it is to get the population to do what you want. Plus I have too much time to dwell on it all and nothing to look forward to.

Me too, @Mascotte, me too Sad

Allflightscancelled · 03/07/2020 10:33

Things are so dulll here today I'm going to put a lawn treatment on and then redo the sealant around the kitchen sink. This is what I've come to, people. I used to have a life!

trappedsincesundaymorn · 03/07/2020 10:37

Oh for the love of the elves why oh why did I just go on to the village FB page?...I really should know better.

" There has been 6x more cases than it was first reported ( provides click to Somersetlive news), it's not going away people, so all those who are thingking (sic) of going to the pub this weekend thingk again...DON'T BE IDIOTS STAY AT HOME!!!!"

This was the same person who, not 3 months ago was telling everybody how we needed the local pub and how important it was for the village to keep it.
OH and this huge figure...remember it's 6x bigger than previously recorded....? 24...24 confirmed cases amongst a population of over 550,000. I despair.

Ibake · 03/07/2020 10:42

Oh absolutely me too @mascotte, definitely one of life's rebels. I do follow rules but my instinctive reaction is always to say 'why?' and then if the answer makes sense I'm happy to comply. On balance, I think we're right on here Grin but one of the reasons for that is because we've been so good at constructive debate, listening to each other, sharing facts and figures etc without getting all screechy and mental.

Anyway, all you Welshies, am off to Chester to see my friend so I'll wave at you across the border!

LivinLaVidaLoki · 03/07/2020 10:44

Im supposed to have a big presentation this afternoon regarding the project I recently got approved. Im dreading it as there are 20 conformed attendees (which in itself isn't that bad) but its on Microsoft Teams (which I generally find to be shit), so I am scared I will lose my momentum or my confidence because of technical glitches or hiccups.

Fucks sake I wish we could just do this in person. In person I am on this, via a computer.....

It drives me mad

Teateaandmoretea · 03/07/2020 10:45

@trappedsincesundaymorn I’d inform them why in a very patronising way....

I had a go on fb at a local dementor over a picture of an airport hanger described as a morgue to scare people at the start. It turned into a nasty local fb shitstorm but the dementors haven’t posted much on there since.
