Twitter is a private company and can screen whoever they like.

Katie is welcome to scream her opinions anywhere on the internet that will welcome her, she could even host her own website and is free to shout from any street corner.

Your right to free speech does not mean there are no consequences for your speech. You are free to shout your hateful views but I don't have to hear it, nor does your employer have to continue employing you if that speech is at odds with their core values or threatens their business.

The right to free speech does not absolve you of the consequences of your speech

mathanxiety · 19/06/2020 19:21

Agree with TeaStory's take on the free speech issue.

She is welcome to stand at Hyde Park Corner and rant away.

mathanxiety · 19/06/2020 19:22

Trump is on thin ice.

sadandlonely2020 · 19/06/2020 19:24

What has this got to do with free speech? My understanding is that Twitter is a private company and presumably is able to have a criteria that must be met in order to use the service.

I'm happy to be corrected on how Twitter is funded though.

It's more worrisome that people think using a free website is exercising free speech.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 19/06/2020 19:27

I don’t agree with what she said but I’m appalled at the shutting down of any debate that is controversial. It’s a really backward step

flashbac · 19/06/2020 19:31

It really is an example of white privilege when people lament the banning of people like Hatie Hopkins. It's alright for you guys. You weren't the target. You won't be harmed by her rabble rousing.

Midnight0 · 19/06/2020 19:31

She is so nasty, she should be banned from everywhere.

slashlover · 19/06/2020 19:32

It’s not that difficult to understand. They are hopping onto the bandwagon. So obvious.

That's not what you said.

JK Rowling deserves a voice - unlike the so called actors whom she helped to achieve fame - or at least recognition.

This clearly implies that she should be allowed to speak and they should shut up.

Twillow · 19/06/2020 19:34

Free speech, including the right to offend, needs to be taken along with the UK laws which include Section 4 of the Public Order Act 1986 (POA) which makes it an offence for a person to use “threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour that causes, or is likely to cause, another person harassment, alarm or distress”.

This law has been revised over the years to include language that is deemed to incite “racial and religious hatred”, as well as “hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation” and language that “encourages terrorism”.

I would say that covers pretty much all of what Katie Hopkins says.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 19/06/2020 19:34

Her posts are goady.

But if you are banning people then the vile posts directed to JKR in response to her tweets are, in my opinion, also worthy of being banned.
But they aren't.

The 1984 thread yesterday was scarily true...

Mrsjayy · 19/06/2020 19:34

Katie isn't debating. She just spreads hate and spews bile,. Twitter has become a cesspit and the owners seem to be clearing out. KH has you tube people can subscribe to her brand of "free speech" if they like.

When have we ever allowed far-right white supremacists a free platform to say whatever they want?
Lardlizard · 19/06/2020 19:35

About time

CherryValanc · 19/06/2020 19:36

@LemonadeAndDaisyChains

Her posts are goady - and I think those who lose it with her know this very well. Why rise to the bait if you know this?

I used to think the same - She crossed the line from goady a long time ago though.

Her most recent tweets about race were to "Patrick van Aanholt"

"Hopkins wrote, "Today is #whiteoutwednesday. I will shortly be posting a picture of my arse. Thank you." Later also tweeting "I am a Straight. White. Christian. Conservative. Married. Mother. of three. And I am PROUD of all these things. Get off your knees to the thuggery #BlackLivesMatter"

Her comments were condemned by many users, amongst which was Crystal Palace footballer Patrick van Aanholt who replied, "I don't know who she is but WOW... 2020 needs to cancel you".

Hopkins replied "My Name is Katie Hopkins. I am a white Christian Conservative You May kneel and kiss my ring."

Not letting the comment slide, van Aanholt replied: "My name is Patrick van Aanholt, I am a Dutch Black, I'm also Christian (not that colour or Religion has anything to do with it)"

There's so much vile abuse spewed out on Twitter I think a lot most people need banning. The eath and sexual threats direct at JK Rowling when she said somethimv that can be act checked in a biology text book were (are) unreal.

GiantKitten · 19/06/2020 19:36

Has anybody mentioned "Tommy Robinson" being banned? Did you free-speechers all complain about that too?

Missed that. Was it on here?

See lots of people quote 1984 on Facebook thinking they are being clever. On no occasion did their apparent point stand up to a simple question.

JRUIN · 19/06/2020 19:40

She has no right to say whatever she wants, wherever she wants, without consequence. Hate speech is a good reason to ban her from twitter. She’d be banned from Sainsbury’s too if she was shouting her tweets in the middle of the fruit isle.

Stupid comparing it to her spouting off in Sainsbury's. People have a right to do their shopping in peace, just as people have a right to choose whether to follow her on Twitter or not.

tilder · 19/06/2020 19:42

‘And no practical definition of freedom would be complete without the freedom to take the consequences. Indeed, it is the freedom upon which all the others are based.’

Couldn't agree more. Sir Terry Pratchett was a genius.

Twitter is a business. It's there to make money, not be a home of free speech and equality for all. Sadly. If it was, half of Twitter would be banned.

sussexman · 19/06/2020 19:44

@CherryValanc I imagine it was this one www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3942356-1984-George-Orwell . The tweets generally agreeing with the premise don't seem to have read the book here either.

spongedog · 19/06/2020 19:46

@Lynda07

She tweeted about Marcus Rashford and his campaign for free dinners for children in the holidays:

"Do you think women should think about how they are going to feed a child before they decide to have it?

"I do not want to pay to feed other people’s kids. You are welcome to."

That caused uproar.

If she'd said "Do you think MEN should think about how they are going to feed a child before they decide to have it?"

I would have absolutely agreed with her and tweeted the hell out her tweet.

runningon · 19/06/2020 19:46

I think KH is a twat, but I don't think she should be banned....she's just doing her job.
There is waaaay worse on Twitter.

FromMarch2020 · 19/06/2020 19:47

She isn't free speech though is she.... she is hate speech and lots of it

LokiOdinson · 19/06/2020 19:48

Censorship?? It's a website with rules. They're allowed to ban people who break the rules, ffs.

Doyoumind · 19/06/2020 19:49

Well deserved. She went too far. It's not about freedom of speech. Her tweets were the definition of hate speech.
