Well said, spongedog :-).

Vik81 · 19/06/2020 19:53

Free speech is a right but it comes with the responsibility that it's not hateful, harms others. Free speech doesn't mean you can say what you want, to whom ever you want damn the consequences!!!!

BeefInMyTeeth · 19/06/2020 19:54

The thing about celebrating the banning of someones right to speak..even if you personally find it abhorrent..is that history teaches that the tide tends to turn..and eventually it's YOUR views that are unacceptable..and you who is prevented from speaking. It doesn't seem quite as celebratory of an act then. Important to remember that, even if it means you have to hear some stuff you hate.

Alsohuman · 19/06/2020 19:57

she's just doing her job

Really? What job’s that? I didn’t know she had one.

Mrsjayy · 19/06/2020 19:58

Twitter isn't a job !

DameFanny · 19/06/2020 19:59

She can still say whatever she likes. She's just not getting free distribution of her filth by a private company.

Hopefully it'll do to her public status what a Twitter ban did to the "nero" idiot Milo whatsit.

Ding dong the witch is dead.

Pumperthepumper · 19/06/2020 20:01

@JRUIN

She has no right to say whatever she wants, wherever she wants, without consequence. Hate speech is a good reason to ban her from twitter. She’d be banned from Sainsbury’s too if she was shouting her tweets in the middle of the fruit isle.

Stupid comparing it to her spouting off in Sainsbury's. People have a right to do their shopping in peace, just as people have a right to choose whether to follow her on Twitter or not.

Stupid to pretend unfollowing someone on twitter means nobody ever sees her tweets. A lot of people agree with her. They’re stupid too.
Roussette · 19/06/2020 20:04

Her job lol.

She's a vehicle for hate.

HeronLanyon · 19/06/2020 20:04

Trump has retweeted her recently. He’ll have to dip even deeper into the swamp for muck now.

Galdos · 19/06/2020 20:04

I don't agree with KH's views for the most part, but we would be a much poorer society if people were not able to express different views. I am viscerally opposed to censorship and limitations on free speech for this reason. Some ideas may be mad or bad, but some thoughtfully question orthodox views. We don't always think of alternative views on our own, and without the likes of Katie Hopkins we could all be sucked into a Guardian-style mindset, when really we should be questioning every bit of government - will it work? whom does it disadvantage? what about the workers? etc. That questioning process - essential to a free democracy - requires questioning from all quarters of the political spectrum, not just the bien pensant.

Oh god, what is it with this onslaught of idiots who think this is against her right to freedom of speech?

Absolute and utter bollocks.

The right wing contrarians like Hopkins would love to shut everyone else up anyway - and many of them would shut up those they disagree with in prison or worse - look at Trump.

Or just look at Karl Popper - the paradox of tolerance states that if a society is tolerant without limit, its ability to be tolerant is eventually seized or destroyed by the intolerant.

Do you want people to be free to call for concentration camps?

Chienloup · 19/06/2020 20:05

She hasn't had her freedom of speech taken away - she has been banned by a particular platform because of the way she has abused that platform to incite hate - she is still free to write a blog or whatever. Same as if someone went into a shop and racially abused the staff or customers - they would hopefully be banned from the shop, but that doesn't mean they've had their right to freedom of movement taken away.

Pumperthepumper · 19/06/2020 20:06

The thing that will ruin our society is this recent idea that you have some kind of right to say whatever you want, wherever you want, with no consequence. You don’t. You never have.

DameFanny · 19/06/2020 20:07

@Galdos you really think that without the cuntery of Hopkins "we could all be sucked into a Guardian-style mindset"? Because you clearly have a very low opinion of your own intelligence of so

JRUIN · 19/06/2020 20:08

Stupid to pretend unfollowing someone on twitter means nobody ever sees her tweets. A lot of people agree with her. They’re stupid too.

You can mute her to make sure what she says doesn't affect your delicate little mind. Also it is possible to agree with some of what she says without being stupid.

Like what?
Chicchicchicchiclana · 19/06/2020 20:13

Good. I love a bit of censorship. I love the whole concept of the editorial process which is why I have so much trouble accepting the 99% dross that is the internet.

Censorship used to mean, pre-internet, pre-mobile data, that most under 18s didn't get to see a lot of hard core porn (for example). I can't argue with the thinking behind that.

We still have censorship (bit pointless but it's still there) on films and video games. If only it were more enforceable.

Katie Hopkins is a scourge and Twitter should do more to clean up their platform.

JRUIN · 19/06/2020 20:14

I'd better not say @Pumperthepumper. You will probably try to get me banned Hmm

Pumperthepumper · 19/06/2020 20:15

@JRUIN

Sure, it’s not that you’re ashamed of your views or anything.
LondonCaIIing · 19/06/2020 20:15

It's kind of depressing that people equate a Twitter ban to being silenced and having your right to free speech removed.

It's just Twitter. A random website that can ban whoever the fuck it pleases. Telling Twitter who it can or can't ban would probably actually be MORE Orwellian.

EffYouSeeKaye · 19/06/2020 20:18

🙌

chomalungma · 19/06/2020 20:18

One thing about Katie Hopkins

She is no Christian.

JRUIN · 19/06/2020 20:20

To be honest @Pumpthepumper I can't even remember. Like I said I find most of her views pretty abhorrent but I think I have agreed with one or two things, just as I have disagreed with some views of my nearest and dearest. It happens.

Pollyputthepizzaon · 19/06/2020 20:21

I believe in freedom of speech.

People are also banned for saying women are adult human females.

It’s chilling.
