on't like KH but is unfair to ban her when they allow such vicious aggression from TRA towards anyone that questions them. Horrific double standards

That person should have been banned as well.
Lots of people should be banned who threaten violence, who promote hate etc.

People who deliberately spread misleading information to encourage hate against a group should be warned by Twitter - looking at you, Donald Trump.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 21/06/2020 19:43

I'm amazed that so many people who are outraged that a social media platform has the power to ban people are still on MN. After all, they ban people every day for breaking their rules

I'm not.
You only have to look at the "but what about this TRA or this one, they need to be banned too!" replies.
YES, those mentioned need banning too, of course it should go without saying! Absolutely vile and need to be banned too.
This thread is about Katie H and her vile hate mongering race tweets though, not trans issues.
Is it making people feel nervous that hate on the internet is starting to be cracked down on or something?
Racism, homophobia, transphobia - all horrible.
Although this thread isn't about the other two, but people seem to be trying to make it so!
It's not an either or situation, less inciting hatred/and or/ fear is good.

Anyone who defends KH right wing hate speech is as much as a racist bigot as she is.

I'd like to say I agree, but all this hate is insiduous.
People see it on different levels.
You only need to see the " what about?" posts on here.
It runs deeper.
On the surface, it's "she's only voicing an opinion, she;s entitled to her opinion!"
It takes an eye opening moment for some (eg final solution tweet, or cockroaches) to think hang on a minute, WTAF!!
You either have your eyes opened to the sheer racism/hatred after passively nodding along or thinking she was just having an opinion, or you had no opinion either way but began reading her stuff and thought "OMG, what's going on, terrible, all these foreigners!" or whatever, or you become more entrenched in your views.
Whichever one you fall under it's GOOD that she's been taken off Twitter as can't drag anyone else in on there.

Twitter has rules. She broke them. She got banned. Fair enough.
But if you have rules as to what you are going to allow on your platform, you should show consistency when ensuring that those rules are followed. On twitter, it seems to be that people aren't banned for breaking the rules, they're banned when their posts cause sufficient outrage.
It's good she's being held to account but if Donald Trump had posted it or someone with almost no following at all had posted it, then they both should be banned as well.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 21/06/2020 23:21

Trump has been started to be hidden for his views though.
One of his latest tweets has come with a warning- you can't view it, unless you "click through" and you can't comment on it. or retweet (share) it therefore won't show up in feeds.
Only sounds like it has stood is because is President, and because it's deemed in the public interest to let stand.
They're sure not letting him be easily seen though.

Leflic · 21/06/2020 23:27

AgeLikeWine I'd gladly see Germaine Greer banned from everywhere after what she said about rapists being 'careless and insensitive ' and should be given 200 hours community service.

Actually she made a good argument for non consensual sex being treated as a lesser crime and therefore standing more chance of being dealt with in law.
But if you read snippets ( like Twitter) or just people that quote the bits they are cross with, then it makes sense to ban her. But without the detail, how can anyone debate whether she has a point ( or not).

isitfridayyet1 · 21/06/2020 23:30

Twitter can ban who they like. She'll have to use her own website to spread xenophobic lies and hatred.

Have seen on Twitter today the hashtag Twexit trending. Went to see what it was about and had to laugh - all the Katie Hopkins fans/ serious racists looking by their profiles were flouncing and going to a newly set up site as Goddamit, can't say what they want to on Twitter anymore, what happened to freeze peach?! Some of the comments were hilarious.
Whole thing kinda reminds me of here and Spinster Grin

I had a look on Parler today - created an account. Bloody hell what a cess pit of fascists and kkk it all seems to be. Hopkins should feel right at home.

KettlePolly · 22/06/2020 17:52

Germaine Greer's comments on rape, if actually engaged with, and understood, might lead to more convictions. Or they might not. Shame the debate has been shut down. Do we really think GG hasn't got women's interests at heart?

Coffeecak3 · 23/06/2020 08:20

@Leflic. What makes you assume I read a snippet? Rather arrogant of you.
Whilst she may have a point that a conviction of non consensual sex could bring about a conviction more easily she imo bases a woman’s experience of rape on her own experience. She’s a tough cookie, many women are not. She says women who’ve been raped, non violently, are not injured or destroyed.
She is not the measure of every raped woman’s experience.
Many times on mumsnet women have been touched, non consensually by their husband in bed and are told it’s sex assault and to report it.
Germaine Greer calls it lack of communication. I thought saying No was all the communication required.

Coffeecak3 · 23/06/2020 08:37

that a prosecution of non consensual sex

I quite like the fact that the fascists on there will essentially be posting into an echo chamber. They will know that the chorus of "Right on hun!" posts are totally meaningless, and they won't be able to cope with the fact that they have lost their capacity to shock because you can't shock people who are even more batshit than you are.
