globalmissingkids.org/awareness/missing-children-statistics/

This is shocking reading. Look at how many children go missing each year in the UK alone! I am certain we don’t hear about most of them. I am presuming that many of them are found and that is why we don’t see more about them in the media. But that is still a huge number.

In Ireland at the moment a teenage girl who was raped has been told the DPP won't take it further, despite signed admissions of guilt, as it is not in the public interest... This is what people are up against. The child involved is in a mental health crisis.

How is it the public interest to let a rapist off? Shock
Smallsteps88 · 06/06/2020 14:00

How in hell is not in public interest to take a rapist off the streets?

@DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes

I think Ameral's determination to pin Joana then Madeline on the parents was because he didn't want the area's tourist trade harmed by people knowing there was an uncaught child abductor/killer on the loose rather than this being in direct cohoots with the perpetrator(s).
To me that's pretty horrifying in itself though! If he genuinely thought the parents were responsible, I could understand his actions much better than if he thought innocent parents of murdered children rotting in prison while the perpetrator went free was an acceptable price to pay for the tourist trade.
Arewedone · 06/06/2020 14:06

@Heygirlheyboy just shocking why can’t it hit the news here then it would be of public interestShock

Heygirlheyboy · 06/06/2020 14:10

It hasn't got the news here either as it's not a case! Guards have done everything but DPP say no. I only know as I saw a tweet earlier so no profile as yet. Appeal to be brought. To say it's hard to believe is an understatement. Family might not be actually able to go through appeal tweet said. Seemed to be maybe a social worker tweeting.

And arewedone that club can be approached from the same direction the Smiths saw a blonde man walking in, with a sleeping child at 10pm...

caperberries · 06/06/2020 14:16

@Arewedone when was that photo fit released? There were so many over the years

pennylane83 · 06/06/2020 14:17

Wasn't the man seen carrying a child in his arms identified by the British police as a holidaymaker carrying his own sleeping child or is there a different sighting I'm getting confused with.

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 06/06/2020 14:18

@PrincessConsuelaVaginaHammock
Yes bloody awful. How anybody supposedly involved in law and order could do anything other than move heaven and earth to catch the scum I will never understand but a few posters seemed to be suggesting that he deliberately covered for a henous criminal. I think it far more likely that they just didn't have any idea who it was and rather than become known as the town with child killer on the rampage he saw a way to "solve" the crime.

SisterAgatha · 06/06/2020 14:19

The Tanner man was a parent. The Smith man is still unaccounted for.

Cadent · 06/06/2020 14:21

Yes, I think that was all cleared up. He was seen by one of the women in the Tapas 7 group.

NameChange84 · 06/06/2020 14:23

There are two sightings of a man carrying a female child. The Smith Sighting near the Estrela de Luz resort remains unaccounted for and is seen as very credible.

Blackbear19 · 06/06/2020 14:24

The Tanner sighting with the child sleeping across him was cleared up after Crimewatch.

The other is just an efit rather than an artist impression.

Cadent · 06/06/2020 14:26

It’s scary how cases remain unsolved due to errors. The Yorkshire Ripper could have been caught much earlier had the police not given up halfway through investigating potential linked vehicles (his car was on the list it was found later), Levi Bellfield could have caught earlier except local police only sent 1 out of 2 CCTV tapes to investigating detectives that showed his car.

Arewedone · 06/06/2020 14:34

The efit was made in 2013 for the 10th anniversary and was made in accordance with the smith account which had not been accounted for unlike the Tanner account. The likeness is compelling but that’s not to say the man is guilty of anything.

LadyEloise · 06/06/2020 14:57

@Heygirlheyboy
That lack of "case" in Ireland sounds like an appalling miscarriage of justice.
Can you contact female politicians?
Mary Lou ( though SF didn't surround themselves in glory when there was abuse )
or
Catherine Murphy
or
Josepha Madigan
or
Katherine Zappone
or
Róisín Shortall

Or all of them.

BeyondDreamsOfBeyondFourWalls · 06/06/2020 14:59

I can kind of see why he thought it might be Gerry if that is the right Diogo Silva - they do look quite similar in the face. Though I have face-blindness so might not be the best judge!!

Arewedone · 06/06/2020 15:08

@beyonddreams I found Diogo Silvas profile which is where the photo came from. If it’s the same guy he worked at Estella da luz for 12 years and is currently working in the Luz cafe in PDL. It’s impossible the police would release those telephone numbers without already knowing the connections. I agree with others they are looking to smoke out contacts.

wintertime6 · 06/06/2020 15:25

@Arewedone I understood the police hadn't yet tracked down Diogo Silva, I thought they only had his name because that was who the phone was registered to, and it's a common name apparently. So I'm not sure the LinkedIn profile you found is definitely the same person?

Arewedone · 06/06/2020 15:32

@wintertime6 I agree no idea if it is the same guy, just an observation. He would been a similar age whist working the hotel next door. I can’t believe with police resources they haven’t already tracked the owner of the phone.Obviously police leak on a need to know basis only.

Blackbear19 · 06/06/2020 15:37

Anyone thing it's only a matter of time before the Portuguese police reopen the enquiry into Joana?

I know that involves an awful lot of back peddling by the police but at the moment their reputation is a bit Hmm

BlueTreeBlue · 06/06/2020 15:50

There is really no reason to reopen the enquiry into Joana. I wish I could find more articles written in English to show how different the cases are. Anyone in Portugal who has worked in schools, social security or police will have no doubts about the Joana case.
Both the mother and the uncle confessed. The mother has time added to her sentence because of perjury related to being beaten up by police officers.
With regards to tourism, it wouldn’t be Amaral himself deciding to pin it on the parents. Why would Amaral himself care about tourism? He’s job is not tourism related. If there were these pressures, it would be from well higher in the government and not Amaral himself.
