I think it’s an easy lie to believe Iwalkinmyclothing. Means we don’t have to do much thinking about the horrible people in the world and it’s comforting to think it won’t happen to us if only we don’t make the same mistakes the mccanns did.

I also think they made a terrible mistake and I wouldn’t ever leave my child in those circumstances but who can 100% hand on heart say they’ve never looked away from their child for a moment and had that heart stopping moment when you cant see them straight away. In the school playground for instance before drop off when they are off playing and you are chatting. Or if you are looking at the magazines and you look down and they’ve run over to a different shelf.

If it really was chance and evil opportunity that took Madeleine, and not human error, how would we ever sleep safely in our beds on holiday again Confused

Back to the suspect, I don’t see how he could both have murdered her and have trafficked her to get the money?

None of us, I imagine, if we are honest. I've never known a fear quite like it.

An extract taken from the link I posted last night.

It seems the police have found evidence on his laptop.

That poor child... there are no words 😢

Swift that would make sense.

You know those photos they released of inside a house. I thought they knew which house but do they?

BeatrixPottersAlterEgo · 10/06/2020 11:10

If he has a habit of masking himself and his victims, then given the sort of people he was probably sharing such videos with, I'm not suprised it could potentially take years to get to the point where the video could be found by the police, and years more until they can actually do something about it.

Add some disguises and crappy 2007 video and it could be almost impossible to be sure who is in the video

There's a website run by (I want to say the FBI but it's probably not them) which has images taken from videos of child abuse. Pictures on the walls, unusually patterned curtains, that sort of thing. They have asked the public to look and see if they recognise anything and to contact them if so.

I do wonder if they've had a video for quite some time, have long suspected that MM was in it, but couldn't be sure, until something else has recently emerged that means it likely is her. Obviously that's just speculation and we'll never know because why should we. But I do wonder if there's been something simmering away in the background. That would explain the vast amounts of time, money and support given to finding MM- I don't begrudge it by the way, but it has been a lot more than for other missing children. If they end up cracking some massive paedophile ring during an operation that has been years in the making, and could potentially involve many more children/people in positions of power, well it would make sense.

CountessFrog · 10/06/2020 11:11

I don’t read that quote as saying there’s a video?

WornDownTired · 10/06/2020 11:13

Lovely beaches, not a lot of people around, at the very end of Europe far away from everyone, beautiful beaches, a posh middle class all-inc resort and friendly, family oriented locals.

Probably the one place you feel safest to look away from your DC or eat 50m away.

The McCanns probably were overprotective and wary back in their own country and didn't let them out of their sight as they were aware of the risk.

BeatrixPottersAlterEgo · 10/06/2020 11:13

I think it's just speculation that there may be a video really, because that seems to be something he does

AlternativePerspective · 10/06/2020 11:23

I would be very dubious about going on to some website to report back to ... who exactly? Are they legitimate? Doubtful, and this is likely the kind of thing that someone with nefarious intentions might put up so that people will look at video’s of places where children have been abused so that these people will know who is interested so they can find potential new recruits so to speak.

Unless the police have made official statements that people need to look at this website rather than them being linked to by some source on the internet I would stay well clear.

SouthWestmom · 10/06/2020 11:24

This thread is becoming a bit weird. There's some unsavoury speculation about videos of Madeleine and her wearing a mask etc.

Bearing in mind the types who get off on this stuff and may be lurking I'm bowing out of the thread for now.

It’s a legit law enforcement/data analysis agency Europol. It’s the Trace an Object campaign.

Victims have been identified thanks to the campaign and it should be wider known.

EdithWeston · 10/06/2020 12:00

www.europol.europa.eu/stopchildabuse

This is the site - it's proper law enforcement and has been in existence for years (there have been MN threads about it in the past, which is how I first heard of it)

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 10/06/2020 12:01

Noeuf yep at the moment the only crime discussed here that he has been found guilty of is the attack on the American lady. It seems likely that he also attacked Hazel as she seems to recognise his methods and it also seem likely that German police have a strong reason to link him to MM but links to MM, other missing children and even Hazel's attack are at this juncture speculation. I've not come across details of the attack on the American lady but if it was similar to that on Hazel to my mind that should be enough to have him locked away for life (at least until he is too old and too frail to pose a threat to anyone ever again). Sadly this doesn't seem to be how the system works and monsters like him are let loose on the world after woefully inadequate jail time. But rather than assume he is guilty of other cases there is a need to establish guilt - that is the job of the police/prosecution not for internet speculation, especially as some of it is wildly reaching, distasteful or plain wrong. I have speculated myself on the thread but only in response to questions when posters have ask how could or stated that X must mean y and I have put forward (what I believe to be) plausible alternatives. I can but hope that the police can resolve these cases and justice be done.

BertieBotts · 10/06/2020 12:03

What? The Trace an Object campaign has been going for ages, it's not specific to this investigation. It's a legit site run by Europol which is the Europe-specific sector of Interpol.

You can't see any details of abuse in the items/pictures so I can't see how it would attract paedophiles.

You can have a look here if you are interested/curious.
www.europol.europa.eu/stopchildabuse

BertieBotts · 10/06/2020 12:06

Agreed it's probably not helpful or respectful to speculate about whether there is a video and/or the contents of such a video.

Police have just said they have evidence they can't share, which doesn't necessarily mean it's too graphic to share, more likely that it would compromise the investigation to share.

AlternativePerspective · 10/06/2020 12:10

@ Noeuf I agree. This thread is becoming extremely distasteful with nothing but individuals’ speculation on what he might have done to her etc. In fact it wouldn’t surprise me if there are unsavoury types on this thread putting forward this kind of speculation for kicks because they know people will discuss it.

This thread needs to go now. IMO. Because it’s become about far more than just MM’s disappearance and the potential leads.

Police have actively said they don’t believe that this will in fact be resolved as public haven’t come forward.

Everything else is speculation gleaned from the internet and deduced by those wanting to play amateur detective. Hideous.

ballyboy · 10/06/2020 12:11

Has there been any statements from the Mccanns regarding all of this? I can't find anything.

EdithWeston · 10/06/2020 12:17

Their spokesperson made a statement on behalf of the McCanns last week. It's included in thus article:

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/jun/04/madeleine-mccann-parents-say-focus-on-suspect-potentially-very-significant

Arewedone · 10/06/2020 12:28

The video suggestion seems to have been leaked by police from the supposed chatroom the police found. In it CB stated he would make a video.

Arewedone · 10/06/2020 12:33

Today’s surprise for me is his girlfriend at that time who had experienced being beaten by him, had had the strange conversation the night before about a horrible job and that he would be disappearing, having herself suggested the photofits looked like him but not having the courage to send an anonymous tip off at the time.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 10/06/2020 12:38

People are not "hideous" for wanting to discuss this massive news story. Some of the more prurient posts could be deleted but there is so much more to this thread than those. People genuinely care and people genuinely want this opportunity the German police now seem to have within grasping distance not to be fucked up.

BeatrixPottersAlterEgo · 10/06/2020 12:38

Yes, it was the Trace an Object campaign I was referring to.

I'm sorry if anything I've posted is disrespectful/seems like it's idle speculation. That wasn't my intention. I used to think that the stories of paedophile rings with powerful people involved were akin to the Satanic Panic stories, but recent developments over the last few years mean I don't know what to think any more. I just hope that whatever has been going on is brought out into the light of day and ended,so that the families can get answers

Someone was asking about Reddit - Reddit does get a bit "amateur sleuth" IME but anyway, there is now a master thread for updates:
