It definitely makes sense for Europe to have some sort of Amber Alert copied from the US.

Is it not believed that in the vast majority of child abductions the first hour is critical to getting the child back.

BertieBotts · 09/06/2020 21:55

@Swiftsseason

They have incredible equipment now though to search wrecks underwater etc don't they.
True, maybe cameras on a string, that kind of thing. And perhaps they can sample the soil/water at the bottom of each well and have that analysed.
Andylion · 09/06/2020 21:58

Maybe it’s time they changed that law in the cases of missing children. So they can immediately access the CCTV of surrounding streets/shops etc. Even if a child toddled off by themselves the CCTV could have them found very quickly.

Are there AMBER Alerts in the UK or Europe?

The wells seem huge

I get the idea that if the German police are leading the investigation and think a well is a likely location they will throw everything they have at it.

I’m not sure.

I think the alert system was something Kate Mcann was campaigning for, not sure if anything’s changed!

IdblowJonSnow · 09/06/2020 22:09

The Portuguese police have been beyond negligent. It's just astonishing what they've gotten away with in many different cases. It all sounds pretty suspicious to me like they were going out of their way to ensure any evidence was diminished.

Blackbear19 · 09/06/2020 22:14

I'd agree with you. Think of the glory "we solved it when Portuguese made an ass of it"

Re Amber Alert there has been talk of it in UK but nothing happened.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 09/06/2020 22:14

Yes the technology is available to see what lies under the land.
Lots of lost cities have been found through satellite/radar/laser technology.
Bodies/graves too:

Swiftsseason · 09/06/2020 22:15

Is that man at the property??

Swiftsseason · 09/06/2020 22:16

And who would be allowed to search? Could German or British police do it

Viviennemary · 09/06/2020 22:27

Ian Huntley I believe changed his surname a couple of times and also one police force removed his name from a register of offenders because of misinterpretation of data protection policies which apparently was why he was able to get the job in a school.

Arewedone · 09/06/2020 22:28

Just slightly off track, if the crime is committed in Portugal why is he charged in Germany?

Swiftsseason · 09/06/2020 22:31

Vivien it's amazing how these people always seem to have the luck of mistakes on their side!

BertieBotts · 09/06/2020 22:32

Because he's a German citizen, I think? But that's what his appeal is based on now. He was extradited from Portugal to Germany on drugs charges. Now they want to charge him with the rape of the elderly lady but he is appealing that because it didn't happen on German soil.

There has to be some way though, surely? It would be a hell of a failure and risk to public safety if he isn't able to be charged with anything else he's done outside of Germany!

Arewedone · 09/06/2020 22:39

@BertieBotts I’ve just googled. If this is true then there is no justice in the world.

Smallsteps88 · 09/06/2020 22:43

Surely all they need to do is release him on the drugs charge and then immediately arrest him for the rape. I’m guessing they’d have thought of that though if it was so simple.

makingmiracles · 09/06/2020 22:52

@smallsteps I’m pretty sure I read they did that before, he was released from prison, followed, fled to Holland and they lost him, he was then re arrested somewhere else 4 wks late. If they have to release him here’s hoping they don’t manage to lose him again.

Swiftsseason · 09/06/2020 22:54

Well, the notorious eu courts of justice!!

Smallsteps88 · 09/06/2020 23:21

If they have to release him here’s hoping they don’t manage to lose him again.

If they’re smart they’ll do it there and then the second he signs his release papers.

Ian Huntley is the reason we have DBS checks because so many forces had pieces of evidence but his pattern of offending wasn’t spotted so he was able to get a job in a school.

I read a heartbreaking interview with a women who was raped by him. He spoke to her in a nightclub as she walked by and she smiled at what he said (you know the way women do to appease men). He followed her home and raped her before she got there. It went to court and he got off because apparently CCTV showing you smiling at a man in a club means you want to have sex with him. Apparently bruises and scrapes on your heels where he dragged you aren’t evidence of force or non-consent. The jury found him not guilty. As well as the police we need to educate jurors on rape myths. If he’d been convicted of that rape, Holly and Jessica would still be alive.

I apologise if this has already been posted

Mycatismadeofstring that is really shocking and upsetting. That poor woman, and all the others raped after her, and for the girls’ parents to know that their deaths could have been prevented- unbearable.

MiniMum97 · 10/06/2020 00:32

Very good point @TracyBeakerSoYeah
