@Fruitpastelsaregood we don’t know it was Madeleine crying. My daughter suffered night terrors as a baby and there was nothing you could do but let her cry it out as you are advised not to wake them. I’m not saying this is the case with MM but sometimes there are explanations.

flapjackfairy · 09/06/2020 11:37

At the risk of getting jumped on didn't I read somewhere that one of the other families had a child that had been sick during the day so those parents were checking frequently on their child ? Or did I imagine that ! Because I cant imagine leaving a vomiting child alone either. That could have been a disaster right there. Obviously the families had no idea of the areas shady side and felt safe there. If things hadn't been hushed up they would have been better able to assess the potential risks .
It is certainly true that Kate admitted that two of the kids were crying for them the night before . What a horrible thought to even imagine there was someone in the apartment.
I hope with all my heart that they finally manage to nail these evil people. It gets more shocking with every new bit of information that comes out. I hope that Kate and Gerry are at least able to get some closure . I have every sympathy for them and can't imagine what they are going through.

Hazel Behan - What a brave woman, horrific what happened to her, and the police response is disgusting.

Arewedone · 09/06/2020 12:18

I’ve just read the initial interview by Hazel in the Irish independent from 2015. It’s heartbreaking. The police took no DNA evidence. Just how can they justify normalising rape.

BobbyBlueHat · 09/06/2020 12:23

If MM told her mum her and Sean were drying surely she would have been able to articulate that someone had been in the apartment the previous night, if that was the case?
I can't imagine her not mentioning it?

BobbyBlueHat · 09/06/2020 12:24

Crying * sorry

Zug2 · 09/06/2020 13:23

OMG, Hazel Behan, I hope the Portuguese police still have evidence from when she was attacked, if not, she should sue them for negligence.

You do wonder if there has been some collusion within the Portugese police to not investigate these crimes, makes you wonder what has been really going on, corrupt ? they cannot be that inept !

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 09/06/2020 13:26

When CB was found guilty of the rape the American lady why the hell weren't the files for local unsolved attacks re-examined to see if he could be linked to any of them? Hazel says there were similarities to her (fairly distinctive sounding) attack so why did no-one make the connection? I can understand not linking the rape of a 72 year old to the disappearance of a 3 year old, but surely someone should have looked at how long he was known to have been in the area at looked at other rape cases over that time frame. They have failed poor Hazel and God knows how many other women it is sickening.

WornDownTired · 09/06/2020 13:38

This man is clearly a terrible danger to society. I know on here we say rape is rape, but this man is predatory and sado-masochist in his actions. Now it seems they think he is responsible for child killings.

This man should have been picked up years ago. He has had a 25 year run of this and it seems that if you want to stay below the radar, then Portugal is your choice of location. How do they even know this? It must be common knowledge.

This man may be up there with the worst of what we have come across in the last century.

ButteryPuffin · 09/06/2020 13:40

Hazel has been incredible. How awful that she has had to be so heroic because she's been let down so badly. And is trying to help other women.

GreyGardens88 · 09/06/2020 13:43

I actually don't think the Portuguese police want to solve this crime or investigate any of the rapes or attacks. I don't think they're even co-operating with the German police. Wasn't there an interview with a Portuguese police officer in the paper the other day where he stated there was no way CB committed the crime and it was just a publicity stunt

Chicchicchicchiclana · 09/06/2020 13:51

This is very very damning of police operations in Portugal generally.

EvilPea · 09/06/2020 13:55

I remember getting ready for work With GMTV on and there being a call in from a family /friend of the McCanns on saying Maddie has gone missing and the Portuguese police weren’t being very helpful and they were hoping the british media getting involved would help.

That was a day or so after she went missing.

InterGalacticPenguin · 09/06/2020 14:02

It was the morning after she went missing. It was shocking. Poor Madeleine never stood a chance Sad
Arewedone · 09/06/2020 14:04

It beggars belief the Irish lady was raped only the year before and 15 miles apart in near identical attacks but the police didn’t connect them.

Zug2 · 09/06/2020 14:11

I just saw after her interview on Irish TV in 2015, someone asked these questions, I guess the same questions and more should be asked again. I really hope the Irish and German authorities will investigate her case now, I would have no trust in the Portuguese to do anything, in fact it looks more and more like there has been a huge cover up going on in that part of Portugal.

" I would like to pose the following questions to the Portuguese ambassador to Ireland, the Portuguese department of justice, the Portuguese police and the Portuguese tourist board:

  1. Since the attack, what steps have been taken to bring the perpetrator to justice?
  1. Was any action taken against the police officers who dealt with her in the immediate aftermath of her rape?
  1. Was this investigation typical of the Portuguese approach to an horrific attack on a young woman asleep in her own home?
  1. What civilised country permits a female victim of rape to be treated in such a medieval manner?
  1. Why were no female police officers involved?
  1. Why was there no DNA evidence collected?
  1. Is Portugal more concerned about its tourist image and unwelcome publicity, than bringing to justice such a monster?
  1. Do you not owe it to the hundreds of thousands of tourists who visit your country to investigate this?
  1. Do your people not want to feel safe in their beds at night ?

I believe that Hazel Behan should be given an apology and her case should be re-opened. "

TankGirl97 · 09/06/2020 14:25

Good lord, poor Hazel Behan. The police response itself is criminal.
The more we learn about CB, the more this reminds me of Joseph DeAngelo (Original Night Stalker/Golden State killer). Sneaking into apartments several times first, moving stuff around, very organised crimes. They took 40 years + to catch him.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 09/06/2020 14:28

Hazel Behan is such a brave woman.
If it transpires that CB & or whoever else involved is/are Hazel's attacker, then the Portuguese police are complicit in all of the other rapes/sexual attacks/abductions/murders that this man/these men have committed.

Plus it's certainly back fired big time on the Portuguese police by sweeping the crimes under the carpet to protect the tourism industry.
The chickens are coming home to roost.

Blackbear19 · 09/06/2020 14:52

I can't decide what the Portuguese police motivation actually is it seems wild to think it's only tourism they were trying to protect.

Is it beyond possible that they are part of a paedophile ring? Or were getting something from CB.

Smallsteps88 · 09/06/2020 14:58

Is it beyond possible that they are part of a paedophile ring?

Not at all. It’s very possible. Paedophile rings rely on either having those in positions of power on the payroll or as part of the ring themselves.

OP posts:
Arewedone · 09/06/2020 15:19

My guess is CB is operating alone and not connected to a ring. I really hope they can convict him. I didn’t realise he is not actually in prison yet for the rape of the 72 year old because he’s appealing it which is why he was due to be released at the weekend, he has completed a drug sentence only.

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 09/06/2020 15:36

'I didn’t realise he is not actually in prison yet for the rape of the 72 year old because he’s appealing it which is why he was due to be released at the weekend" it is beyond horrifying that he could have been free to walk among women and children. I wonder if part of the motivation of the German police in allowing his name and photograph to find it's way into the press was to try and protect the public if he was released? Something's that the Portuguese police appear to have failed spectacularly to do.

Arewedone · 09/06/2020 15:50

@digout I’m thinking possibly the reverse, they are trying to make it as unsafe as possible, (vigilantes, suicide etc) for him to be released by keeping up the media leaks to convince the courts to keep him inside thereby giving themselves more time to gather evidence.

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 09/06/2020 16:10

@Arewedone either way they seem to be pulling all the stops out to try and ensure that this monster can't walk out of prison and carrying on commuting vile crimes.
