Oh, xposted, didn't realise she hadn't heard of the case until later. That makes more sense.

SuperlativeScrubs · 07/06/2020 12:31

Here is something I came across that is very strange. The news report is from December 2019.

Police Psychic believes Madeleine is alive and living in Germany

BertieBotts · 07/06/2020 12:31

Psychics are probably like stopped clocks though - right twice a day.

Arewedone · 07/06/2020 12:34

Going back to the telephone numbers released interesting 3 men where questioned at the time, because they were making calls from close to the apartment & 2 from the Ocean club were involved in break ins in the block maddie was staying. One admitted being involved in burglary and at the time the UK police felt the ocean clubs driver Carlos da Silva was a key suspect. Wonder if finally they will find out they were involved.

NameChange84 · 07/06/2020 12:34

I think she also assumed “Maddie“ was part of the family because her hair was the same colour (not blonde) as the other children. Of course it’s possible whoever had Madeleine dyed her hair.

And how many times do children make up stories about “she’s not my mummy!”. At four I told everyone I had an identical twin sister and my parents could only afford one school uniform so we’d take in turns to come to school but it’s a secret so please don’t tell anyone because if not we’ll never get sent back to our “real” mummy in another country. Now they’d probably take out a CAFCAS if a kid said that at school.

AlternativePerspective · 07/06/2020 12:37

@ @Aposterhasnoname** that’s not a confession though is it? It’s a drunken bloke with a history of hideous crimes boasting to a probably equally shady character about something which was so well known that the types who move in those kinds of circles probably wanted to be tied to it for notoriety among their kind....

AlternativePerspective · 07/06/2020 12:40

Oh dear God not the psychic angle again...

At the time MM went missing posters on here were religiously following the talk of some known as “Bryan the psychic.” Hmm

I’d imagine that any so-called psychic would want to be known for finding Madeleine.

If I said that I was a psychic and could see that she’d died I would probably be right. But it wouldn’t have anything to do with my (non-existent) psychic abilities....

SouthWestmom · 07/06/2020 12:46

I just think this is becoming a bit frenzied. His actual crimes don't include abduction of a child. The most serious is the rape of the older woman and then there seems to be a verified history of child sexual abuse images, petty theft, drugs running and exposure.

There's no evidence other than location for the three other children and in the case of the little boy, his family had accepted he had drowned. It's good to double check and make sure there isn't a link but this seems to have got out of hand in the media.

ButteryPuffin · 07/06/2020 12:50

the four year old English child in a shop in Amsterdam with a Portuguese speaking man and an English speaking woman shortly after the abduction who told the staff member her name was “Maddie” and “This lady isn’t my Mummy. She’s a stranger. They took me from my holiday”.

I strongly believe I've read somewhere - possibly in news reports and in Kate McCann's book - that Madeleine was always known as Madeleine, never Maddie - that was a convenient shortening for headlines but not used by anyone who knew her. So it would seem odd that the 'real' Madeleine would refer to herself that way. I think sadly this is one of many well meant but inaccurate sightings.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 07/06/2020 12:51

I think ‘police psychic’ probably overstates her connection with the police!

Mymycherrypie · 07/06/2020 12:52

All I will say about Portugal is that there is a reason all the old London gangsters have properties there.

ButteryPuffin · 07/06/2020 12:53

Noeuf I know that for many offenders there is a 'type' but that doesn't mean there has to be. With some of the very worst, most prolific offenders the age range or even sex of the victim doesn't follow a set pattern. Savile attacked girls and women of a range of ages. I think other multiple offenders have been mentioned as doing this too.

AlternativePerspective · 07/06/2020 12:56

@ Noeuf agreed. The press are desperate to publish every detail they can unearth, and a number that they have probably made up on this case.

And no doubt if anything comes of this the tabloids will be clammering to be the one who “reported it first.”

But it’s actually dropped out of the mainstream media already, and i strongly suspect that by the end of next week it’ll be yesterday’s news and nothing will ever come of it.

Blackbear19 · 07/06/2020 12:56

There's maybe only circumstantial evidence that the police are giving out.
They must have more they aren't letting on.

In the hunt for the German girl Inga? They found childs clothing but not her clothing, who's clothes where they?

BertieBotts · 07/06/2020 12:58

I suppose the little girl in the shop could actually have seen the news and decided to pretend to be "Maddy" not realising the impact something like that could have!

NameChange84 · 07/06/2020 13:03

@BertieBotts yes that’s a definite possibility but I guess we’ll never know seeing as it was never investigated.

@ButteryPuffin thanks for that info. I did wonder myself seeing as I’d never heard the family refer to her as anything other than Madeleine.

BankofNook · 07/06/2020 13:04

I wonder if CF was involved or knew about MM disappearance and was somehow taking some delight in the McCann's distress in inviting them over. I hope not.

Just catching up since yesterday.

In my opinion, CF inviting the McCanns around to his place is part of the classic deflection techniques employed by those hiding in plain sight so that if/when his own crimes come to light people will doubt it because "Clement!? No! I can't believe that! He hates anything like that and always been supportive of those who have been hurt by it, look how helpful he was to the McCanns..." or words to that effect.

Someone DH and I know was always very vocal over the years about "paedos" being scum, if the news was on and there was a something about kids being hurt he would always make a remark calling them all sort of names and "how could anyone do that to a child!?", he was active on the PTA, helped run local family events such as Christmas parties put on by the parish council, and so on. Imagine how shocked everyone was when he was met in a carpark by a paedophile hunter group for soliciting sex from four separate decoys whom he believed to be young girls, the youngest of which was posing as a nine year old and the oldest as an eleven year old. He thought he was there to meet the eleven year old. His first defence was to say "I'm not like that, ask anyone around here and they'll tell you I hate paedophiles".

SouthWestmom · 07/06/2020 13:05

Buttery I'm aware of that; it's the fact he doesn't have any convictions for kidnap and yet the press are identifying him as a serial killer. The link to MM seems very possible but there's a desperation to paint him as already a killer and serial abductor.

SouthWestmom · 07/06/2020 13:14

And the press have sunk to a new low, stalking his adoptive mother.

Blackbear19 · 07/06/2020 13:21

Think about it this way.
Do you think the police have spent hours and hours working on this to release a name on a whim / nothing more than circumstantial evidence?

They must have evidence to get him on at least one of the cases and possibly need others witnesses, people who've previously provided alibis to help pin the others on him.
Or at least that's my thoughts.

Swiftsseason · 07/06/2020 13:25

Her abductors could call her Maddie and a young child would adapt to that very quickly.
Having said that anyone keeping her I would expect them to use a different name.

I'm very happy all these other cases are being thrown up. Maybe it is a stretch that this guy didn't commit all these offences if any. But , a cold, unemotional criminal with no family to speak of, no morals at all, with access to numerous vehicles, endless houses, camper vans..
Easily flitting without constraint across the eu? He has shown not only motive but has carried out one and defiantly more (video) tape assaults.
He has motive, desires, capabilities and everything going for him really.what shuts down cases is the refusal to expand the possibilities...

Swiftsseason · 07/06/2020 13:27

German police are extremely cautious about divulging any names etc in cases due to their history.

It's a '' thing '' in their justice system.
They know he is their man.

Swiftsseason · 07/06/2020 13:34

I wonder if all tricky cases should automatically have second, third opinions triggered if they stall.

Ie x minds are better than one. Have other detectives come in and take afresh look from the beginning... Combing through...

Thinking of Jeremy Bamber and how that first detective strangled the investigation and nealry let jb escape justice!

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 07/06/2020 13:34

To clarify re the Dutch shop - I don't actually think is was MM. I doubt that anyone who had her would risk taking her out in public - it would be far too risky. It was more a why the hell would you let them disappear off into the sunset if you thought it was MM. I agree probably a child that had half absorbed the news but really didn't understand the implications of what she was saying.

Blackbear19 · 07/06/2020 13:35

Children of that age can be attached to their names. My niece came into the family just a little younger than MM was when she was abducted.
Her new parents tried to change her name. SS advised the best way was to use First name and Middle name then drop the first name, niece was having none of it, "my name isn't Amanda Ava it's just Amanda". So they gave up - names changed obviously.
