I absolutely love Stickman. DD is obsessed with it and loves wearing the costume. I also like paper dolls though I well up every time I read it.
I don’t like Tabby McTat. I just can’t get the rhyme right!

Oh god, just read a post about The Highway Rat. I had thankfully forgotten that one until I read that post. Now I remember that was the only story I was allowed to read to toddler dd at bedtime for 6 months. I was so happy when that time was over. Until 3 months later toddler ds (14 month age gap) had the same bedtime story obsession.

It was traumatic. I now remember do sting the book to a neighbour and am wondering their children loved it as much!

pigoons · 23/05/2020 23:02

Favourite - stick man
Didn't like - Charlie Cook, Superworm or Tiddler

Ds would argue Tiddler is OK. Charlie Cook and Superworm read once

JetSetGo · 23/05/2020 23:03

Snail and The Whale. Reminds me I need to get a life by getting out a bit

Thisisgreen · 23/05/2020 23:20

Favourite here is Snail and the Whale
Least favourite is the Smartest Giant and the Rhyming Rabbit

DS is in Reception and the Head teacher was talking to parents about the importance of reading to kids everyday, and he said “please please please diversify from just reading the popular books like JD’s”. I have to say while the books are enjoyable for kids (and some adults) they are all mostly cut from the same formula which I find can get a bit unoriginal.

Yellowcakestand · 23/05/2020 23:29

Really don't like the highway rat.
I can't choose between room on the broom and the gruffalo. I do like stick man better in film animation than the book though

Zisforstripyoss · 23/05/2020 23:34

I don't like A Squash and a Squeeze either, it doesn't scan for me.

I do like The Smeds and the Smoos and Room on the Broom (I can recite Room on the Broom off by heart, both my DC loved it that much!)

Alexindiamondarmour · 23/05/2020 23:50

Favourite is Stick Man - “Thanks, thanks a million, thanks without end!”

Least favourite is Smartest Giant in Town. Just wasn’t as interesting as the rest and the rhyming rhythm was slightly off in my opinion.

Quirrelsotherface · 24/05/2020 08:46

Oh paper dolls is very special and I love highway rat, apart from the annoying repeat bit which reads clunkily to me. I always miss the repeat out and it reads much more smoothly Grin
Also love the snail and the whale, not keen on the spider counting one, can't think of title but only because it goes on foooorever and my DC love it so it gets requested a lot.

LeonoraFlorence · 24/05/2020 09:35

Love Paperdolls, Sugarlump and the Unicorn and the Detective Dog. My DDs love the Singing Mermaid. I’m not keen on Sharing a Shell or Gruffalos Child!

LeonoraFlorence · 24/05/2020 09:35

Oh and all of us just love
The Smeds and the Smoos.

WingBingo · 24/05/2020 09:40

@Quirrelsotherface i do the same with the Highway Rat. It is much better if you skip the repeating lines!

WingBingo · 24/05/2020 09:41

Oh and Stickman appears to have been gone for a whole year, it makes me sad.

1wokeuplikethis · 24/05/2020 09:50

Love paper dolls, it’s so sweet and does make me a bit emotional.

Can’t stand tyrannosaurus drip.

Read the gruffalo so many times I learnt it off by heart a few years ago so that will always be a fond favourite too.

skinnyhotchoc · 24/05/2020 09:53

Princess Mirabelle is rubbish. Sugar lump and the unicorn is lovely

Limeandsodit · 24/05/2020 09:55

Love Stickman

Highway Rat I don't like at all

jackparlabane · 24/05/2020 10:02

Can't cope with the fear in Stick Man, and the Flying Doctors and Ugly Five were a bit rubbish (as confirmed by DC's).

Loved Tiddler, Zog, and both Gruffalo books. Local library had Gruffalo in Scots so I've tried doing Scottish gruffalos ever since. Kept me entertained, at least.

AnneBullen · 24/05/2020 10:08

The monkey is SO RUDE in Monkey Puzzle, annoys me every time. I always have to say “if you were that monkey you would say thank you to the butterfly wouldn’t you?”. Rude little shit.

Scarecrow wedding is weird with the cigarette.

Love super worm, room on the broom, gruffalo and child, stick man.

AnneBullen · 24/05/2020 10:10

I love squash and a squeeze. It’s clearly set in pre Holocaust Eastern Europe, he’s a rabbi (it is in fact an old Jewish story, so that’s what she’s drawn on). If you do the relevant accents it makes it much more fun!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 24/05/2020 10:11

Love Zog because I think it’s a brilliant message for girls. Also Tiddler because of the rhyming.

Troll is a very weird book. I always think I’ve missed a page. It’s like two books that sort of crash together at the end. No idea what she was thinking when she wrote that one.

The singing mermaid we love. The glittery pages are fab.

Tabby McTat is fab, but we love cats.

DC love Highway Rat and Charlie Cook.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 24/05/2020 10:13

Forgot to mention scarecrows wedding. We have a lovely hardback copy, but we read it once and it upset the DC. So that is now “a scary book”. Can’t be read, can’t be given away.

RoosterPie · 24/05/2020 10:13

The monkey is SO RUDE in Monkey Puzzle

This is actually a very fair point.

Same reason I can’t read Where the Wild Things Are - because Max is such an arsehole

DobbyTheHouseElk · 24/05/2020 10:13

Magic Paintbrush is lovely!but I think it’s a Japanese story? Not sure, it’s a long one.

Marmite27 · 24/05/2020 10:14

I also hate Tabby McTat, it just doesn’t rhyme for me. I also don’t like Charlie Cooks Favourite Book.

I think my favourite is Scarecrows Wedding.

begoniapot · 24/05/2020 10:18

I love the whale and the snail. It even makes me tearful!

Don't dislike any of the books.

villainousbroodmare · 24/05/2020 10:24

I must say I don't love any of them. Cave Baby is about the best. The Smartest Giant and Squash etc went in a charity bag asap. I dislike Axel Scheffler's illustrations.
I absolutely love anything by Shirley Hughes, especially the Katie and Ollie books, and Dogger.
