I absolutely love Stickman. DD is obsessed with it and loves wearing the costume. I also like paper dolls though I well up every time I read it.
I don’t like Tabby McTat. I just can’t get the rhyme right!

I HATE all of JD's books, with particular venom reserved for the Smartest Giant. None of them scan, half of them don't rhyme in my accent, and I don't like Axel Scheffler's drawings.

EssentialHummus · 23/05/2020 19:11

The song in Tabby McTat drives me bonkers - I can’t figure out a sensible tune to it.

Cam2020 · 23/05/2020 19:47

I love The Paper Dolls - can sometimes get through it without crying, but it's 50/50. I find the troll and pirates one a bit annoying.

Cam2020 · 23/05/2020 19:50

@Wheresthebiffer2 Stick Man annoys, me too. I get so bored of the endless 'I'm stick man, I'm stick man, I'm stick man that's me'. My daughter loves it though Sad

Ineedanamechangeagain · 23/05/2020 19:58

I like monkey puzzle, really dislike the flying bath

imamearcat · 23/05/2020 20:07

I love Zog and room on a broom.

I find the Gruffalo and stickman a bit tedious to read but I love the story/films.

Less great I think are the unicorn one and the troll.

Scruffyoak · 23/05/2020 20:10

Charlie cooks favourite book is my favourite and smartest giant is least.

ContessaferJones · 23/05/2020 20:13

DS2 LOVED Tiddler, so I love it too Grin he and DS1 also liked The Gruffalo, which I have never understood as a story. Surely it's a tale of how lying convincingly gets you good results?

Also: Stick Man. It's bloody horrific. They are sticks and live in a tree, which is surely the hollowed-out body of a giant from their perspective. They mark the insides of said giant with burnt pieces of wood (i.e. flesh). They have ornaments made of leaves - which are what? Hair?

Stick Man is WEIRD.

Solasum · 23/05/2020 20:15

I haven’t read Postman Bear for about 4 years now and can still remember it verbatim.

A squash and a squeeze annoys me as it is just the retelling of an old fairytale repackaged.

I like the BBC Stickman adaptation. They are all on iPlayer at the moment.

I like the Gruffalo. I find myself rambling about Gruffaloes whenever we go anywhere wooded.

TooGood2BeTrue · 23/05/2020 20:18

Best: Torn between Room on the Broom and The Gruffalo
Worst: Zogg

ChateauMargaux · 23/05/2020 20:45

I feel like a part of my life as a parent is missing as we never had Paper Dolls, my eldest son was 7 at the time it was published and we moved abroad so I guess it just passed me by.

OfTheNight · 23/05/2020 20:51

I love Room on the Broom and A Squash and a Squeeze.

Don’t mind Zog, What the Ladybird Heard, Gruffalo, Highway Rat.

Can’t be doing with Smartest Giant, it’s so boring. Smeds and Smoos and Ugly Five are so twee!!!

0utForAWalkBitch · 23/05/2020 21:02

My favourites are Tyrannosaurus Drip and The Paper Dolls.

Worst....I hate Stick Man, and Tabby McTat. And I also HATE Axel Schleffer’s illustrations. So ugly.

monkeyonthetable · 23/05/2020 21:04

I love Snail and the Whale. It makes me cry every time.
Less keen on the Smartest Giant.

Daisyhut · 23/05/2020 21:13

Love: Stickman, Room on the Broom
Hate: The Smoos and the Smeds, it feels like a lecture and the topic has been done before, much better by Dr Zeuss

OpposableThumbs2 · 23/05/2020 21:59

Sharing a Shell is my favourite.
Don't like Rhyming Rabbit at all. Really must remove it from the book shelf so I don't have to read it again.

sauvignonblancplz · 23/05/2020 22:02

Love Room on a Broom
Dislike Charlie Cooks Favourite Book

Racheyg · 23/05/2020 22:12

Squash and a squeeze. Or snail and the whale - I love those books.
I know stickman and gruffalo off by heart.

I've never read or heard of paper dolls. My least favourite is the smartest giant

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 23/05/2020 22:37

Does anyone else have set accents they read the Julia Donaldson books in?

I always read Squash and a Squeeze in an Irish accent, Night Monkey Day Monkey in a Yorkshire accent, and Tabby McTat is a Scottish accent

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 23/05/2020 22:38

Or at least my own attempts at Grin

sauvignonblancplz · 23/05/2020 22:41

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

Squash and a Squeeze is a confused Scottish accent, along the lines of Mrs Doubtfire Grin

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 23/05/2020 22:42

sauvignonblancplz Grin

I forgot - Room on the Broom is my best attempt at McGonnogal

OverlyLeafy · 23/05/2020 22:49

Favourites are probably Room on the Broom and The Snail and the Whale. Tiddler has grown on me.

Can't get on with riding, riding, riding in The Highway Rat although I absolutely love the animated version of it - David Tennant's voice makes me HOWL WITH LAUGHTER! "Ohhh these nuts are hard as can be!" He sounds so pissed off, it's fantastic.

Also can't be doing with "I'm stick man, I'm stick man, I'm stick man!" Yes we know you've told us a thousand times ffs.

A Squash and a Squeeze is so twee, but then it's based on some old fable or something isn't it so can't really be helped.

OverlyLeafy · 23/05/2020 22:52

Oh and the giraffe/scarf, scarf/laugh thing in Giant and Stick Man; yeah don't work for my accent and I refuse to change it so it messes it up:

Here comes a boy in a warm woolly scarf,
an arm for my snowman he says with a laff

Iadoremylabrador · 23/05/2020 22:57

My absolute favourite is Monkey Puzzle...

'No no no! Can't you see? None of these creatures look like me!'

'You never told me she looks like you.'

'Of course I didn't! I thought you knew.'

'I didn't know. I couldn't you see.. none of my babies look like me!'

Followed by my second favourite, Stick Man.

Stick man is lying asleep in the grate, can anyone wake him, before it's too late?

Skip a page..

'A stuck man, a stuck man!''

It's hilarious.

Worst one..

Charlie cook. Also didn't like The Smartest Giant but my children loved it. FFS.
