I absolutely love Stickman. DD is obsessed with it and loves wearing the costume. I also like paper dolls though I well up every time I read it.
I don’t like Tabby McTat. I just can’t get the rhyme right!

Can't decide between Stickman and Charlie Cooks favourite Book.

I don't like Monkey Puzzle very much and find Zog tedious.

3cats · 23/05/2020 15:53

I like The Smartest Giant. I also like Room on the Broom and The Gruffalo. I remember trying to explain to an American friend joe giraffe and scarf rhyme. I don’t likeThe Troll. I find it drags.

3cats · 23/05/2020 15:54

Joe = how

3cats · 23/05/2020 15:54

I once had an American book that rhymed carrot with share it. Shudders!!

JoeExoticsEyebrowRing · 23/05/2020 15:55

I'm going old school and saying The Gruffalo, it's a classic! Smile

Smartest Giant in Town in a bit long and tedious but my kids used to like the bit where his trousers fell down.

No one has said The Scarecrows Wedding yet? Is it because of the smoking? Wink

HollyBen · 23/05/2020 15:58

Favourite is Room on the Broom. I really like Charlie Cooks Favourite Book, I think it is very clever.

My least favourite has to be Stickman as I think it is so sad

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 23/05/2020 16:01

Favourite - Charlie Cooke's Favourite Book or The detective dog
Least Favourite - Stick Man (controversial I know)

Magicbabywaves · 23/05/2020 16:02

Paper Dolls is lovely. But actually, I can’t stand most of them. They just go on and on.

noonaah · 23/05/2020 16:05

Love Snail and the Whale and Stickman. Hate a Squash and a Squeeze and The Smartest Giant! Also think the Gruffalos Child is better than the Gruffalo controversially.

medb22 · 23/05/2020 16:06

My favourites are Stickman, Snail and the Whale, and - controversially it seems - Superworm (it reminds me of The Raven, which is one of my favourite poems - I know the rhyming scheme isn't the same, but there's something about the drama of it). I also really like Detective Dog Nell.

I don't like The Ugly Five or Tabby McTat for reasons I can't quite put my finger on. And I despise A Squash and a Squeeze, mainly because the old man is so bloody smug.

I do struggle a bit with some of the lines in a few of the stories, mostly because of accent I think (like the example above, scarf and giraffe). Sometimes I just can't get the rhythm of it - I trip over The Highway Rat a bit, and also there's one line in What the Ladybird Heard that I can never get right ("and the little spotty ladybird who never before had said a word/told the animals").

We have most of them now, but I haven't heard of Paper Dolls - must check it out.

Pickles89 · 23/05/2020 16:09

I love Julia Donaldson books. It's very hard to choose a favourite, I mean, The Gruffalo is a classic of course, but I love the story of Zog because she's a kick-ass princess instead of a soppy one, which is refreshing. I think my favourite to read is Room on the Broom. I don't like Spinderella at all, and returned The Highway Rat to Waterstones because I really don't like the repetition. They are mostly brilliant though! Also, how totally adorable are the illustrations?!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 23/05/2020 16:16

Why Spiderella of course. The stick man is very cute, though.
Don't like the highway rat.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 23/05/2020 16:17

Also like a squash and a squeeze

geojojo · 23/05/2020 16:18

Favourite is the Snail and the Whale.
Least favourite is the Scarecrows Wedding

SecondaryBurnzzz · 23/05/2020 16:18

My DD is 12 now, so I don't know the new ones really, I have to say
Tiddler! is my absolute favourite of hers and I still know it off by heart 10 years later. Monkey Puzzle is a runner up and makes me teary at the end.
I have never got on with Tabby McTat either, because it didn't scan when I read it.

Hairy Maclary books are the absolute best though, especially if you love dogs and cats.

snowone · 23/05/2020 16:41

My 14 month old currently loves postman bear, my personal favourites are the snail and the whale and paper dolls.

Least favourite - smartest giant, zog and a squash and a squeeze!

Scarf and giraffe don't rhyme up north, I really struggle when I'm reading it, it annoys me that I have to say giraaaaaaaffe!

MinorArcana · 23/05/2020 16:42

I like Stick Man and A Squash and A Squeeze best.

The one that really annoyed me was The Ugly Five.
I can’t imagine any wildebeests, warthogs and so on going around singing about how they’re ugly compared to different species of animals!

It’s about as plausible as a human singing about how humans are ugly because we look so different to other great apes (chimpanzees, gorillas etc).

mnahmnah · 23/05/2020 16:45

We love Charlie Cook. So clever.

Hate Tiddler. Basically tells them that lying all works out in the end

MynephewR · 23/05/2020 16:48

Favourites are monkey puzzle, Tiddler and room on the broom. I don't like the scarecrow wedding, Tabby McTat or Superworm.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 23/05/2020 16:49

Love room on the broom.
Meh about superworm

parrotonmyshoulder · 23/05/2020 16:58

I love ‘Jack and The Flum Flum Tree’

Cannot stand ‘What the Ladybird Heard’

keepingbees · 23/05/2020 17:04

Favourites are The Gruffalo, Room On the Broom and Monkey Puzzle.

I like the Stick Man story but find reason the book too repetitive (like a lot of her books I find.)
Don't like Charlie Cooks Favourite Book, Zog or Smartest Giant in Town.

BikeRunSki · 23/05/2020 17:07

Upthread I said that Charlie Cook was my favourite, but actually, it’s a tied first place with The Paper Dolls, a very different book.

RoosterPie · 23/05/2020 17:13

I love Monkey Puzzle and Paper Dolls.

I think The Troll is appalling and I also don’t really like Tyrannosaurus Drip because I don’t like the pictures (same illustrator as The Troll I think).

Worst is Cave Baby - not only are the illustrations not very child friendly, but is it me or are his parents total arseholes?

Ohnopoo · 23/05/2020 17:16

I love the paper dolls, snail and the whale and stickman
Not keen on zog or the highway rat.
We had the CD set and they are burned into my mind after countless plays on car journeys!
