I absolutely love Stickman. DD is obsessed with it and loves wearing the costume. I also like paper dolls though I well up every time I read it.
I don’t like Tabby McTat. I just can’t get the rhyme right!

I really like Fox’s socks because DS loved it as a baby. I also have a soft spot for A squash and a Squeeze which isn’t getting much love here.

Not a fan of The Troll.

stuckindoors77 · 23/05/2020 17:21

I love Julia Donaldson and find it really easy to engage the kids I teach with them.
Hard to pick a favourite, maybe squash and a squeeze (good message) or What the ladybird heard.

Least favourite by a mile is spinderella I find it tedious in the extreme and it doesn't rhyme!!

Wheresthebiffer2 · 23/05/2020 17:28

I like A Squash and a Squeeze
Am I the only one who detests Stick Man? I can't stand stick man, stick man, and his dear lady wife, and family three. AAAAgh. I wish they'd just light that fire and be done with him.

FanSaBhaile · 23/05/2020 17:35

Giraffe and scarf don't rhyme to me, there's no R at the end of giraffe to match scarf.
My favourite is Charlie Cook's Favourite Book - love the end!

Aria20 · 23/05/2020 18:24

Oh I quite like Zog, and Jack and the Flum flum tree "Don't get your knickers in a twist..." always made the kids laugh. Also Monkey Puzzle, I don't mind highway rat either as I do my scary voice lol.

Not a fan of smartest giant, the troll or Tiddler!

2yo dd loves Tabby McTat as she's obsessed with next doors tabby cat Grin

Aria20 · 23/05/2020 18:26

@Wheresthebiffer2 GrinGrin about Stick man! I loved it the first 30 times I read it years ago but now it is a bit boring lol.

Aria20 · 23/05/2020 18:28

@RoosterPie I forgot about Cave Baby yes that is the worst! Tyrannosaurus Drip isn't great.

chillychicken · 23/05/2020 18:29

My favourite is Monkey Puzzle.
Least favourite is Tabby McTat, I find it clunky.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 23/05/2020 18:35

I love The Gruffalo. It's a great story.

I detest Room on the Broom. It's tedious.

HouseOfSticks · 23/05/2020 18:38

@Wheresthebiffer2 lady love not wife. I know because that’s the role I always get assigned when me and DD play stickman

Favourite Snail and the Whale least is The Highway Rat.

Pollyputthepizzaon · 23/05/2020 18:41

I hate Charlie cooks favourite book. My young children never had a clue what was happening in it.

SellFridges · 23/05/2020 18:42

The Paper Dolls is my favourite.

I’m not bothered about Monkey Puzzle. But all Julia Donaldson trumps some of the other shite out there.

UnitedRoad · 23/05/2020 18:43

I live A Squash and a Squeeze best, and hate The snail and the whale.

My children are older so I haven’t read anything after The Gruffalos Child, and Charlie Cook.

Millie2013 · 23/05/2020 18:44

Love “What the Ladybird Heard”, but mostly because we’ve got precious memories of going to see the stage adaptation with my parents, before my lovely Dad became poorly and we sadly lost him
It was such a magical day, but I can’t read the book now without getting a lump in my throat

PissOffStayAtHomeDogMum · 23/05/2020 18:46

Long time ago now, but I loved Room on the Broom, The Gruffalo and A Squash and a Squeeze (we still refer to that one now, and oldest is 18). Monkey Puzzle and the Smartest Giant were good, too. We made up a tune for the 'my tie is a scarf for a cold giraffe' bit (and scarf and giraffe definitely rhyme where I live). Never much liked the Snail and the Whale. DD loved the Gruffalo's Child when she was tiny, though I was less enthusiastic. She also liked Charlie Cook (again, I was less keen).

Cuppaand2biscuits · 23/05/2020 18:48

My favourites are Paper Dolls, The Scarecrows Wedding, Stickman and Charlie Cook's Favourite Book.
I really don't like The Princess and The Wizard where the wizard keeps the princess hostage. And there was one where someone (a circus master?) Kidnaps a mermaid, that gave my dd nightmares. I gave both of those away

kennycat · 23/05/2020 18:52

Hated the unicorn one and Freddie and the fairy.
Like smartest GIant (I just made up a great homeschool week of learning g for my year 1 Son around it) mainly because it doesn’t do the relentless rhyming thing.
And I like Charlie cook but the illustrations are too intriguing to read it in rhyme.

We all like tiddler.

tempnamechange98765 · 23/05/2020 18:52

Love these books! Haven't read all of them, including the smartest giant in town, tabby mctat and Charlie cook's favourite book. But my favourite has to be the Snail and the Whale. Least favourite out of the ones I've read is probably Monkey Puzzle, just because of the repetitive nature (I know some of the others are repetitive, but this one feels more so!).

buttersidedown · 23/05/2020 18:53

I haven’t read many of them so haven’t come across any I dislike. But my favourite is The Scarecrows’ Wedding. I often try to convince the children they want it for their bedtime story!

RomaineCalm · 23/05/2020 18:54

'Stick Man' was a favourite along with 'Tiddler', 'Tyrannosaurus Drip' and also the 'Gruffalo's Child' (better than The Gruffalo imo Wink)

'The Magic Paintbrush' was never popular here.

For years we always looked forward to a new JD book coming out and then suddenly you realise that DC have moved on.

In 'What the Ladybird Heard' DH and I used to have our own version of what the farmer said - it certainly wasn't 'Golly gosh!'Confused

UnderTheBus · 23/05/2020 18:54

Rhyming Rabbit Is rubbish. In fact O dont like any of the ones done by that illustrator - theres a unicorn one, one about a pair of magic shoes and one about a princess who lives in the mirror. All rubbish.

I like the Axel Scheffler illustrated ones best. My favourite is probably Stickman or The Smeds and the Smoos

lljkk · 23/05/2020 18:54

I don't warm to any of them & I especially loathe The Gruffalo.
Is Gflo a rip off of a much better quality old fable?

Vamoosh · 23/05/2020 18:55

Am I the only one who hates Paper Dolls? I find it so boring!
I love the rest though, can’t really pick a favourite!

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 23/05/2020 18:56

Such a difference of opinion with the MN jury!

I love Snail & the Whale - it's almost poetic in places and interesting vocabulary compared to some of the others. Also love Highway Rat for its echoes of the Highwayman poem and the chance to ham it up with DS "Stand and DELIVERRR" Grin

Honourable mentions to Zog, Tiddler & Tabby McTat. I find all of them nice to read.

Hate hate hate Smartest Giant. That awful 'song' repeated over and over. It's one of the few books I'd never pick to read. Gruffalo is a bit dull and Gruffalo's Child ditto.
