What songs just make you swell with emotion?

Can share why if you want or just share the song name. Or add a link so we can listen.

Attended an online funeral today and they played Highland Cathedral and realised it is always one that gets me. I was at this Proms in the Park that's seen on the video and I cried then and cried today when I heard it.

Evanescence - Missing
Lene Marlin - Maybe I'll Go
Darren Hayes - Black Out the Sun
Armin van Buuren - I Surrender

mama3bear · 25/05/2020 09:11

Hurt that someone has ridiculed and criticised my song choice which is very personal to me for reasons that I didn't share. I'm sorry that you don't like them but they are my choice Sad

Iorderedyouapancake · 25/05/2020 09:22

Ignore them @mama3bear, just an immature person who behaves like a schoolchild trying to pretend they are “cooler” than you. I’m not a Celine Dion fan usually but can still see that some of her music is very moving, personally I love It’s all coming back to me now

RobuxBriberyIsMyLifeNow · 25/05/2020 09:56

All music is subjective and decent people understand that mama so take no bloody notice. Whilst I liked the movie High Fidelity, I am cannot stand music snobbery.
I have one song I like for pretty much all artists, struggling to think of many that are anathema to me. It shows a spectacular lack of imagination to write off an artist unless you have heard every song they have ever produced.
My favourite song by Celine Dion is Falling into you but I also have a soft spot for Ashes from the Deadpool 2 soundtrack.

36degrees · 25/05/2020 10:14

Spark by Tori Amos, in fact most of Tori Amos' output. She's always been there at the toughest times in my life.

All I Want is You by U2 - used to great effect in Reality Bites.

Faster by the Manics - went back to see the Manics live after a 20 year break from them (my teenage self decided they were becoming deeply uncool dad-rock from ADFL onwards) and the acoustic version of this led to a chain of events that changed my life for the better.

Hyperballad by Bjork, it's like having a hot bath and a great night out at the same time.

Iorderedyouapancake · 25/05/2020 10:21

Are you me 36degrees? Tori has been the soundtrack to my hardest times too. Was torn between putting spark and playboy mommy so went with the latter 😄 liquid diamonds from that album is also very moving. The Dakota version of hey Jupiter is another tearjerker for me.

Am now singing faster in my head- that’s a real blast from the past, I used to be a HUGE manics fan but also went off them when they went a bit dad rock.

nevernotstruggling · 25/05/2020 10:24

That rock a bye song by Anne Marie abd some other people. I'm a cp sw. It upsets me so much I turn the radio off

massistar · 25/05/2020 10:26

John Lennon's Beautiful Boy makes me well up every time I hear it.

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 25/05/2020 10:35

Bon Jovi "livin on a prayer" (and lots more by bon Jovi), starship "we built this city", Fleetwood mac "landslide", Tom Petty "won't back down".

Imnotamagician · 25/05/2020 10:51

This may make me sound strange but baby of mine from original dumbo film. I always have to walk out the room as I cry so much. Also memory by elaine paige- cats( see a theme here lol)

SkySmiler · 25/05/2020 10:58

Maroon 5 - memories

Coldplay - fix you

Iorderedyouapancake · 25/05/2020 11:01

Oh god yes memory gets me too- usually start crying at “I was beautiful then” and then don’t stop!

portocristo · 25/05/2020 11:04

Robert Palmer every kinda people and mercy mercy me gets me every time also Isley brothers harvest for the world

2020times · 25/05/2020 11:05

@mama3bear - ignore mean girls ridiculing your song choice. I'm not a celine fan either (nothing personal - just not my preference) but "because you loved me" is a beautiful song (it's actually my song for my mum Smile)

I think the Dumbo baby mine song probably kills everyone doesn't it? It's made me sob since I was a child and I avoid it completely now I'm actually a mum

MrsExpo · 25/05/2020 11:22

That'll do Babe ... Peter Gabriel
Supermarket Flowers ... Ed Sheeran (the video makes me cry for my own mum, even though she's been gone for 13 years and I'm in my mid 60's!!)
True Companion ... Marc Cohn

... an odd selection, but those three or sure ....

Flease · 25/05/2020 11:37

Slipping through my fingers from the Mamma Mia film. Every single feckin’ time! My kids are nearly 16 and 18 so it’s that’s probably why. I love hearing all your song choices. Great thread!

Whattheduck · 25/05/2020 12:04

Time to say goodbye - Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman
Enigma variations - Elgar (both played at my grandads funeral)
Ghetto gospel - Tupac and Elton John ( played at my teenage godson’s funeral)
Cat’s in the cradle - Harry Chaplin
There you’ll be - Faith Hill
Fix you - Coldplay
Purple rain - Prince ( brings back memories of going to see him live numerous times with my dh)

SimplySteveRedux · 25/05/2020 14:11

Ghetto gospel - Tupac and Elton John

Oh yes. Sorry for your loss.

What's the point of ridiculing/criticising other people's choices? Ridiculous.

Whattheduck · 25/05/2020 15:22

@SimplySteveRedux
Thankyou I thought some might think it an odd choice but so many songs stir up different emotions and just take you back to something significant good or bad

Mrsorganmorgan · 25/05/2020 15:29

Barcelona - Freddie Mercury and Monserrat Cabal, makes the hair on my arms stand up. She has such a beautiful voice

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 25/05/2020 16:09

personally I love It’s all coming back to me now

Celine's version is lovely, but have you heard the original by Pandora's Box? It's not all that well known, but the combination of several powerful and emotional female voices is amazing.

She was outstanding - all the power that you normally get with established opera singers, but also the expressive feeling and emotion that you very often don't.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 25/05/2020 16:12

True Companion ... Marc Cohn

Beautiful, beautiful song.

herecomesgeralt · 25/05/2020 16:12

Oh I love It's All Coming Back To Me Now. It was inspired by Wuthering Heights, and I always recall the book when I hear it!

Mrsorganmorgan · 25/05/2020 16:18

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

I love her voice but I think she died recently, which is very sad.
