Personalised car number plates - yay or nay?

Just that really.

DH is so keen.

I think it's tacky and a waste of money. I genuinely can't understand why you'd want your name (or some ridiculous incarnation) as your car reg, but maybe I'm a grumpy bitch.

Thoughts?

It's funny that the people who don't like them are super judgy and quite rude, but those who do just shrug and go "I like it".

Almost like not having one makes a person superior somehow - I'm sure those making unkind remarks also do things/own items others would consider tacky and naff.

Like everything else in life some people do like them, some don't. I don't give enough of a toss to feel either way.

megletthesecond · 16/05/2020 12:33

Nay. Tacky and a waste of money.

SingleHandSue · 16/05/2020 12:33

I don’t like them at all.

I also would never use a trade company who have them on their vans, if they can afford to deck out all their vehicles they clearly over charge.

Haha! Bragging about the value of a tack status symbol doesn't make it any less tacky. But ok.

I'm def not the typical mumsnetter. But I honestly think loads of people think they are tacky not just a certain type obsessed with being properly middle class / wealthy /whatever it is they're obsessed with.

JoyceTempleSavage · 16/05/2020 12:59

I’m not bragging about the value. I was pointing out that it’s not a waste of money if you can get an actual realisable return of 85% in three years for an asset that you use every day.

AnnofPeeves · 16/05/2020 13:09

You don't need to disguise the age of your face either. Millions do though

But I'm wondering why people would want to disguise the age of their car with personalised number plates, not why people wear make up

TreacherousPissFlap · 16/05/2020 13:11

It's one of the polarising things in our relationship. DH has one and it is literally his favourite possession.

It doesn't offend me or anything but I see it as pointless and certainly wouldn't have bothered if I was on my own. As we only have one car now (DH has a works van) I get the privilege of driving round with it Hmm

Thankfully it's a fairly innocuous one and could pass as not personalised. It also has the added bonus of not dating my car at all which I've only just realised.

Sparklingbrook · 16/05/2020 13:13

I have put make up on now. DH and DS2 are not being fooled that I have become younger in the 15 minutes it took. Sad

PhoneLock · 16/05/2020 13:24

It's the same reason. Vanity.

PhoneLock · 16/05/2020 13:30

You could have donated the money it cost to charity.

Sparklingbrook · 16/05/2020 13:31

I am loving personalised number plates being exactly the same as make up. Who knew? Grin

WhenPushComesToShove · 16/05/2020 13:54

I have one which was left to me by a late much loved and missed friend

copycopypaste · 16/05/2020 13:56

I've had one for about 25 years, it's great as I never forget my registration number. Even easier now you can do it all online.

copycopypaste · 16/05/2020 13:57

Oh and for the 'make up' analogy. You can't make your car look newer. So you can put an 02 number plate in an 07 car, but you can't put an 07 plate, on an 02 car

copycopypaste · 16/05/2020 13:58

Or you could realise I'm a complete muppet and put those the wrong way round - still stands tho, you can't make your car look younger than it is Grin

Rockbird · 16/05/2020 14:01

I'm not sure why people say it's always about trying to disguise the age. I've made my car about 40 years older than it is Grin

Sparklingbrook · 16/05/2020 14:01

That's the right way around isn't it @copycopypaste? Now I am confused. Grin
But maybe the make up analogy still counts as the car can stay the same age forever. Shock Grin

Fishfingersandwichplease · 16/05/2020 14:02

Pointless waste of money imo

timetest · 16/05/2020 14:03

DH has one. I think they’re naff.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 16/05/2020 14:05

They always spell W4NK3R to me!

PinkSpring · 16/05/2020 14:07

We have one but the letters and numbers only make sense to us so it doesn't spell a name or anything.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 16/05/2020 15:06

All number plates are personalised. That's kind of the point of them. Grin

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 16/05/2020 15:07

Doesn't bother me, wouldn't want one myself but each to their own.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 16/05/2020 15:18

A friend chose her number plate when buying a new car. She was lucky that one of the options had her initials as part of it. Not a vanity plate in the strictest of terms, but as somebody who was quite forgetful it helped her remember it. I would do that, if it was an option.

emojisarentwords · 16/05/2020 16:28

Personalised plates are for knobs. Big knobs who actually have small knobs
Agreed
