Personalised car number plates - yay or nay?

Just that really.

DH is so keen.

I think it's tacky and a waste of money. I genuinely can't understand why you'd want your name (or some ridiculous incarnation) as your car reg, but maybe I'm a grumpy bitch.

Thoughts?

My friend was bought one as a present. She hated it and "accidentally" forgot to change it when she sold her car.

emojisarentwords · 16/05/2020 09:25

I'm not bothered or offended if I see someone with one, but I do think it's naff and it makes me cringe whenever I see one. Screams 'new money' and classless to me. Wouldn't get one myself so nay from me.

emojisarentwords · 16/05/2020 09:27

Oh and every time I see one it makes me think that the person is trying to hide that their car is old

I think the same when I see makeup on a face.

Sparklingbrook · 16/05/2020 09:33

Are we really comparing number plates and make up? Confused

stardance · 16/05/2020 09:34

Waste of money. Can't see the appeal at all personally.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 16/05/2020 09:35

I think these comments just indicate that everyone needs to do what makes them feel good and what they want because whatever you do, someone, somewhere will be judging it.

Who cares? You dont live your life on the basis of other people's opinions!

JudgeRindersMinder · 16/05/2020 09:35

I had one for my 40th birthday almost 10 years ago, number 40 and my initials-it cost £100 and I love it. It’s on its 3rd car now, and it’s not to disguise the age of my car as I’ve had them from new, it’s just a bit of fun.

Private plate on an Audi, I’m surprised I’m not banned from this site Grin

userxx · 16/05/2020 09:37

@JudgeRindersMinder Shall we leave together 😏

👀 🍿

AnnofPeeves · 16/05/2020 09:38

God no. They don't add anything at all to your life, it's just a way of showing off.

PhoneLock · 16/05/2020 09:39

Are we really comparing number plates and make up

Why not? Judging from the responses to this thread, there are a lot of similarities. It is only bought to satisfy the wearer's vanity, serves no real purpose and is often looks tacky.

Wherearemyminions · 16/05/2020 09:40

Have one, spent less than £500 on it quite a while ago, I like it, couldn't care less what anyone else thinks. It's all relative, I don't spend ££ on skincare or makeup or spa days , to me those things are a waste of money, but it's entirely up to people to spend their money on whatever they choose and if it brings them some pleasure then that's a bonus.

wehaveafloater · 16/05/2020 09:43

I bought my first one when I heard a friend of DH look at our car down his nose and say "oh it's an 18 plate". Bloody pompous ass. Had a private plate on by the end of the week. My DH said it's was overkill to do that, but it's done now. (It probably was an over reaction. )

Oldraver · 16/05/2020 09:44

Are we really comparing number plates and make up?

I think it's a valid point. One of the criticisms about PP is the cost. I bought one 20 years ago and it cost £300, which I still have. Recent one was £400 three and a half years ago and we will have it for years

I would never spend vast amounts of money on make up, but understand it makes others happy

Sparklingbrook · 16/05/2020 09:45

I might hang a personalised number plate off my face today on that case @PhoneLock. Grin
Strange comparison TBF.

Russellbrandshair · 16/05/2020 09:45

I have one. I love it and it lifts my mood every time I see it.
Others find them tacky- so don’t get one! I’m chuckling that anyone would actually think I give a damn what they think, if I like something I’m not going to not get it because some random person I don’t know or care about thinks it’s tacky lol.

JudgeRindersMinder · 16/05/2020 09:47

@userxx just let me grab ds, he’s away to get one for his 18th birthday (plate, not Audi 🤣)

Bargebill19 · 16/05/2020 09:54

I’m in the fence. - I don’t like the flash ones which say stuff like ‘tax’ and are on big flashy motors.
But I have no problem if you want your initial or a fun word - our local ironing lady has managed to get 1ron.
But what do I know - I bought a car that has the initials of where I live and also spells Boob - purely because I can remember it and it makes me smile.

Pleasebeafleabite · 16/05/2020 09:54

I love the fact that they irritate mumsnetters. If I didn’t have one already I would want to rush out and buy one immediately.

emojisarentwords · 16/05/2020 09:55

Haha you sound like you have a personalised number plate. Make up is often used to help one look older so your comment doesn't really fit but good attempt though well done.

TimeWastingButFun · 16/05/2020 10:07

We both have them but they're just a bit of silly fun, nothing to do with our names or anything and between them they cost less than £2000. Some of them are eye wateringly expensive and you still have to shut one eye to see the word!

WowStarsWow · 16/05/2020 10:41

@Bargebill19 1RON would be worth tens of thousands of pounds, so I looked it up and it's on a white Easy Rider which seems to be a posh mobility scooter. Is this your ironing lady? Grin

BTW, dodgy spacing and screws (and fonts, but you don't see those so much these days) are illegal. Number plates need to be easy to read.

WowStarsWow · 16/05/2020 10:43

Oh and DH and I both have them at the moment, through circumstance more than anything, as one we got with a previous car and kept it, and the other cost under £300 and was replacing one that was a gift and had sold for a few thousand. Both to disguise age of cars.

moonset · 16/05/2020 10:50

Nay. Tacky & a waste of money but if you're already shacked up with someone who thinks they're great I fear you're gonna lose the battle here.
