Personalised car number plates - yay or nay?

Just that really.

DH is so keen.

I think it's tacky and a waste of money. I genuinely can't understand why you'd want your name (or some ridiculous incarnation) as your car reg, but maybe I'm a grumpy bitch.

Thoughts?

I really dislike matching ones ( especially if the cars match too!)

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 16/05/2020 16:49

I had one bought for me, I didn't like it, didn't ever want one and still don't. I let that registration lapse.

I think it's possible to say that you don't like them without calling people pretentious, wankers, or rich-wannabes but then, what do I know? This site is chock-full of people with some quite serious personality flaws by the look of it.

Indeed. So much vitriol on this thread for something completely innocuous. Jealousy is a very ugly emotion.

It isn’t jealousy, it really isn’t.

Rightly or wrongly, personalised plates are considered a class signifier by many people who perceive them as somewhat naff.

SoftBlocks · 16/05/2020 17:19

No.

beautifulstranger101 · 16/05/2020 17:20

Thinking they are naff is totally fine, personal preference is totally fine.

But why all the hatred and vitriol? i see some really nasty, vile, rude comments on here about something that is not harming anyone else and most seem to regard as a bit of fun.
I cant imagine getting that upset about a fcking number plate - i mean, good grief, it must be fuelled by something and most likely, yes, its jealousy. You dont get that angry about something unless there is a strong emotional component- like jealousy.

PhilCornwall1 · 16/05/2020 17:29

Personalised plates are for knobs. Big knobs who actually have small knobs

My wife has a personal plate. Last time I looked she didn't have a knob, well taking me out of the equation of course! 🤔

GrapefruitGin · 16/05/2020 17:31

Nayyyy - unless you have a huge amount of disposable cash

BruceAndNosh · 16/05/2020 17:33

Mumsnet hates personalised plates.

Apparently it's ok to start a thread asking which designer handbag should I buy with a budget of £1000, but it's naff to spend a lot less than that on a Plate

Sparklingbrook · 16/05/2020 17:34

It was only a matter of time before someone said 'jealousy'. Because being jealous of people having something you don't like or want is indicative of jealousy obviously. Grin

Sparklingbrook · 16/05/2020 17:35

I wouldn't want a £1000 handbag either.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 16/05/2020 17:35

I love a good Naff Number plate thread.
It's so funny to see people getting all irate about something that doesn't affect them the tiniest bit!

Froth on!

Sparklingbrook · 16/05/2020 17:36

My MN Bingo Card for Personalised Number Plates Threads is nearly full. Grin

SpaceCadet4000 · 16/05/2020 17:42

Not for me. Someone on our street has a custom painted convertible BMW and their plate is "BIGROY" which has me in hysterics every time I see it.

BruceAndNosh · 16/05/2020 17:47

There's one regularly parked outside a house on my route to supermarket, some numbers and POO.

Now that IS naff

lazylinguist · 16/05/2020 17:51

That's implying that anything expensive is naff. Confused Personalised number plates aren't naff because they're expensive. They're naff because they're naff. Grin

Yes, I don't see why people get cross about them - I just think they are amusingly tacky!

Tennistime · 16/05/2020 17:53

I bought an old but quality motor, it had been on vanity plates so the original, age specific number had to be reinstated. Bizarrely the original number reads like a vanity plate (don’t know how it got through the system) and I’ve been approached a few times by vanity plate owners who think I’m a fellow wanker - I always put them right.

SquirtleSquad · 16/05/2020 18:29

@PhoneLock what the fuck are you on about!?

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 16/05/2020 18:31

Tacky. Beyond tacky. For people with more money than sense.

Cheesecakejar · 16/05/2020 18:34

A customer I once had at work referred to them as 'vanity plates' 😂😂😂 I'm not fussed either way, if i could afford a decent one i would probably buy one but i couldn't care less that I don't have one...

Zomblie · 16/05/2020 18:39

I should imagine that the owner of KR15 HNA (which looks like a completely normal plate) probably doesn't give two shiny shits what you think about his/her plate as when he/her sold it they banked £180,000 for it.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 16/05/2020 19:04

Good one, Zomblie!

My plate is the original and actually, it means something to me as I made up a mnemonic to help me remember it and the phrase is something that makes me smile. Means bugger all to anybody else, it's a bog-standard plate.

It's on an Audi though so I'm already on myriad hate-lists. Grin

AnnofPeeves · 16/05/2020 19:38

I have no idea at all how the intense pervasive pressure on women to look younger can in any way be compared with wanting to disguise the age of a car as Phonelock is trying to imply Confused

AWaspOnAWindowReturns · 16/05/2020 19:42

I have one. It was a gift to mark my 30th birthday and the birth of DS, from my DGP who have since passed away. It was bought as something personal, that could be kept forever, and they knew if they gave me cash it would be swallowed up with bills or house repairs. Every time I see it I'm reminded of my lovely DGP. I've bought one for each of my DC to mark their future 21st birthdays, for the same reasons. I think "tacky", and "an indicator that people have money to piss up the wall" are a little uncalled for.

Hoggleludo · 16/05/2020 19:43

@BoxyRoxy

Untrue. My friend is a billionaire and brought one for his wife for their wedding present!
