Personalised car number plates - yay or nay?

Just that really.

DH is so keen.

I think it's tacky and a waste of money. I genuinely can't understand why you'd want your name (or some ridiculous incarnation) as your car reg, but maybe I'm a grumpy bitch.

Thoughts?

Very nay.

ExpletiveDelighted · 15/05/2020 20:41

I'm not keen, a few of my friends have them and I always spot their cars out and about, I'd rather be more low key. I disagree that the ones that are just a regular registration make cars look older them they are, they are a bit more subtle but look out of place enough to make you realise they are a personal plate.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/05/2020 20:41

I once knew someone with a personalised number plate who claimed they couldn’t afford a dentist’s appointment. People prioritise different things but this is one I can’t get my head round.

Circumstances change though. I've got one and I could afford it when I bought it but I certainly couldn't afford it now and therefore wouldnt buy one.

I have one. It's a 'normal' number plate but the letters are my initials. There's a long backstory but it really peed off my ExH! 😁😁😁

Reallynowdear · 15/05/2020 20:45

Not for me but get one if you like them.

My ex-husband had them on all of his cars, I refused throughout our 20 year marriage, we were OK with that.

amusedbush · 15/05/2020 20:47

I think they're naff as fuck.

My dad got one for my mum's Christmas and she was over the moon. I had to nod and "oooh... mmm...uh huh" at it because I couldn't bring myself to actually say I liked it Blush

BrandoraPaithwaite · 15/05/2020 20:47

To me, they absolutely scream "Wanker"

Hedgehog44 · 15/05/2020 20:47

God no! Awful things.

GindependantWoman · 15/05/2020 20:48

I don't understand why people dislike them?
I see people's comments about Del Boy and real posh people wouldn't have them (some do) but nothing that makes sense and I don't see how people can be bothered or offended about something other people do that just doesn't affect them.

I don't have one as I am a night tight but have often thought about it. I wouldn't spend more than £500. The ones I look at are either my initials or I could get my name but it's almost £800 and not really worth it.

I really like it when you see really clever plays on names or words.

Katjolo · 15/05/2020 20:48

Nay

ohlookthisisjustdaftnow · 15/05/2020 20:48

Nay. Wanky.

lakeswimmer · 15/05/2020 20:50

No - don't see the point.

A relative bought his wife one and she was quite put out - didn't want people to know where she was going!

Waspnest · 15/05/2020 20:50

Nay, agree with those who think it's a waste of money. But I read somewhere that some people have them so that you can't tell that their car isn't brand new (IYSWIM).

Chocolate50 · 15/05/2020 20:51

No hate these they always belong to complete arseholes. Pretentious rubbish

usernotknown · 15/05/2020 20:52

I love them.

I don't care about what other people think though.

Chillipeanuts · 15/05/2020 20:52

Nay! Thrice nay.

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/05/2020 20:52

Just awful.

As well as that, if you call a recovery place and they need an actual number plate, they will then ask you for your VIN. I was always astounded how many people liked their car enough for a personalised plate but not enough to find a VIN.

I once asked a mechanic to just go out and point at the place I had told the driver the VIN was in because he was swearing blind it wasn't there. Wanker. Sexist, pretentious wanker.

Ginfordinner · 15/05/2020 20:54

I agree that they are for people who have money to burn. I also think they are a bit naff, but wouldn't judge anyone for having one.

I think that women having number platesthat say SUE or CATH or anything similar haven't thought it through properly. It tells the rest of the world that the car is being driven by a woman and I would worry abut a random pervert following me home.

Lockedownbutnotout · 15/05/2020 20:55

Used to hate them, thought they were pretentious. Now I’m in a position to buy a more expensive car but not brand new I think I’d quite like one, just so people wouldn’t know my car isn’t actually brand new

@MrsTerryPratchett if a car has a cherished plate from new, that is the actual reg. the age related plate is only assigned by the DVLA when the plate is removed. The cherished plate also becomes the actual reg when the age related plate is removed.

I know this because it is an absolute faff to deal with when people want one on their leased cars.

We also deal with maintenance through recovery companies and no issues there.

Ask a driver what their ViN is tho and it'll be a while until you get any response 🤪

icansmellburningleaves · 15/05/2020 21:00

A big fat waste of money. Very show-offy.

OneOfTheGrundys · 15/05/2020 21:00

No. Not at all classy. Just a lot of money for something that cheapens the look of any car.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 15/05/2020 21:00

Noooo havent you seen the good place? Personalised numberplates take you to straight to the bad place ie hell!

rossKemp · 15/05/2020 21:00

So so tacky
