Personalised car number plates - yay or nay?

ilovewinterpansies · 15/05/2020 20:20

Just that really.

DH is so keen.

I think it's tacky and a waste of money. I genuinely can't understand why you'd want your name (or some ridiculous incarnation) as your car reg, but maybe I'm a grumpy bitch.

Thoughts?

It depends a bit on the number plate.

For instance 50 GWR for Graham R Wilson who also likes trains is good

JU10 SNW for Sue and Neil Wilson who married on 10th July is just tenuous

So tenuous that only Sue and Neil would see the connection unless is was pointed out to them. So what's the harm?

Why would anyone need to disguise the age of a car? What doesn't make sense to me is that people say they don't care what other people think of their personalised plates, yet they do seem to care what other people think of the age of their car Confused

PhoneLock · 16/05/2020 11:36

You don't need to. You don't need to disguise the age of your face either.

Millions do though.

JoesExotic · 16/05/2020 11:38

Tacky. With one exception...there's a drain cleaning company in our area which has T-URD and P-POO (or similar)
I smile every time I see them.

Lonelycrab · 16/05/2020 11:39

Nay. Very tacky imo.

Ihavechildren · 16/05/2020 11:40

I could be persuaded about a proper old fashioned (really expensive!) one like ABC1

The ones that use numbers to form letters and/or slightly misspell names, yuk.

Sparklingbrook · 16/05/2020 11:40

I don't wear make up to disguise the age of my face. Confused

I know a friend has them to disguise the age of the car but she has a new car every 2 years anyway.

PhoneLock · 16/05/2020 11:45

I don't wear make up to disguise the age of my face.

Why do you wear it? Vanity?

PuppyMonkey · 16/05/2020 11:48

I wouldn’t say I found them “wanky” but on the other hand I wouldn’t be in the slightest impressed with one, and I don’t understand why anybody would feel the need to waste money on one. Bit strange and utterly pointless all round tbh.Confused

Naaamechangedofcourse · 16/05/2020 11:49

Personalised plates are for knobs. Big knobs who actually have small knobs
Agreed

Rookie93 · 16/05/2020 11:52

My DP has a number plate he's grown fond of and it's been moved to newer vehicles over time. He's so fond he's used the same 'name' for his company, so for him it's worth the money. At least I don't have to keep remembering new plate details 😀

AgeLikeWine · 16/05/2020 11:54

I’m not a fan of personalised plates, and would never buy one myself. They do seem to be a status symbol among a certain type of self-made wealthy person who wants everyone to know how successful they are. Fine for those who need that sort of external validation, but I don’t.

I do know some people with plates who were given them as presents, though. They can be an answer to the question ‘what do you buy someone who has everything?’

kedooo · 16/05/2020 11:56

I completely agree with you OP! Find them very tacky but each to their own

Tootletum · 16/05/2020 11:57

Naff and tacky. If money's really burning that much of a hole in your pocket give it to charity instead.

overtly · 16/05/2020 11:58

@JudgeRindersMinder my personal plates are on my white RR, before that on my m sport. Guess I'm a twat too.

Due to the length of time I'v had my plates they show my car as much older than it actually is. I'm definitely not a car expert but I find it very easy to estimate the age of a car without looking at the number plate so those who are using them to disguise the age of the vehicle it's probably pointless.

Ihavechildren · 16/05/2020 11:59

The good ones can be excellent investments so it's not really "wasting" money. I wouldn't want one though.

Russellbrandshair · 16/05/2020 12:01

If money's really burning that much of a hole in your pocket give it to charity instead

This could apply to ANY purchase that someone online considers to be “unnecessary”! You could argue that about any possession 😆

peanutsandcream · 16/05/2020 12:17

Mine was a present. No way would I have bought one. I don't really like them but have had mine for many years on different cars. I have got used to it being my reg.

Sparklingbrook · 16/05/2020 12:21

Why do you wear it? Vanity?

Not sure why I have to justify wearing make up on a thread about personalised number plates TBH. Grin I like wearing make up, I always have. I feel more confident and 'myself' when I wear it. I hope that's ok!

Rockbird · 16/05/2020 12:22

Yay. Mine just has my initials on it so not glaringly obvious but I love it. It makes me happy when I see my car, I doubt anyone else even notices it.

Rightbutno · 16/05/2020 12:27

Really tacky. Honestly depending on who you are around socially and professional people will judge you for it.

JoyceTempleSavage · 16/05/2020 12:30

Mine was a present three years ago from then DH which cost £3,000. I was offered £5,500 for it earlier this year.

Not bad for a tacky status symbol.

It used to mildly entertain me to drive round with my plate annoying my XH after my divorce but now I think it’s going to please me even more thinking how much it aggravates a Better Class of MNer even more

Livingoffcoffee · 16/05/2020 12:31

Completely agree OP. My DH and his entire family have them. Cost an absolute fortune. I honestly don't understand it.
