Personalised car number plates - yay or nay?

Just that really.

DH is so keen.

I think it's tacky and a waste of money. I genuinely can't understand why you'd want your name (or some ridiculous incarnation) as your car reg, but maybe I'm a grumpy bitch.

Thoughts?

So tacky

Pipandmum · 16/05/2020 07:18

They're called 'vanity plates' in the US. Says it all really.

MaMaMyCorona · 16/05/2020 07:22

Nay! It's so tacky and pretentious

They’re like having eyelashes on your headlights.

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 16/05/2020 07:42

I have one but you wouldn’t realise as it’s in the current style of plates. it’s my initials, year of birth, & my nickname Eg

AS63 ANI

Obviously not the real plate. And it makes my car look older than it is - so it’s not about that for me. So shoot me.

Mind you around here we have
WAG
G SPOT

ThighThighofthigh · 16/05/2020 07:45

LTB!

I saw one that said BLOKE once, I thought that was funny

ThighThighofthigh · 16/05/2020 07:46

Not a great idea if you're an armed robber though, people could remember the plate easily.

HeronLanyon · 16/05/2020 07:52

Nay with bells on.

Having said that the last new car I bought I spent longer choosing the registration plate than the car ! From a list of available - normal plate - but got a ‘good’ one and avoided some unfortunate letter combos.

Personalised seem to be on two categories - Royal/diplomatic and tacky/crude/rude - or is that one category ? Grin

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 16/05/2020 07:55

I love mine and I really couldn't give a toss what anyone else thinks, I buy stuff for me, not for the approval of other people!

PhilCornwall1 · 16/05/2020 07:56

If I was going to put one on a car now, I'd definitely go for crude, just to shock my mother. She disapproves of so much I do for no reason, so I'd give her something to really get her teeth into.

BL10 JOB would give her the vapours!!

Ughmaybenot · 16/05/2020 07:59

I have one, I know they’re very marmite, but I bought it for myself on my escape from an abusive relationship as a treat, and it’s almost symbolic to me in a way. Completely self indulgent and that’s okay sometimes.
Admittedly, for those who hate them, I made it even worse by having it on my Audi to start with, a brand of car which we all know gives you honours access to the wanker club 😂 but I didn’t care 😂
It’s now on my L200 pickup truck, and I still love it.

I chuckled at this. This might make you feel better- mine is a BMW, I'm pretty sure that qualifies me to be a FAR bigger wanker than you Grin

A colleague of mine has just got an Audi. Her justification is "I'm a wanker already, so I'm just confirming it!!".

I've also had an Audi, that was a company car, but had no choice (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!!). The Fleet Manager took great pleasure in informing me I had joined an "exclusive club". My membership ended after 3 years. Can't say this too loud, it was a nice car. Shhhh!!

redwoodmazza · 16/05/2020 08:16

I bought a really cheap one in late 1980's.
I still use it now but it's only a letter, a number and my 3 initials.
I hate personalised plates when the spacing is messed with though - it makes them look so pretentious.

Ughmaybenot · 16/05/2020 08:21

@AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter ah congratulations, that truly is the position of power in the Wankers Club Grin

@PhilCornwall1 I used to say the same 😂 it’s okay, I believe your excuses Wink

Tartan333 · 16/05/2020 08:27

They are really tacky. They are the adult version of buying a ruler or cup with your name on from a seaside tat shop when you were a child.

PhilCornwall1 · 16/05/2020 08:29

@Ughmaybenot Oh ok I'll come clean. I didn't choose the car as it was there already when I joined, as it had been ordered and the person who it was for walked out, so I got it, but............ I really liked that car. Blush

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 16/05/2020 08:31

ah congratulations, that truly is the position of power in the Wankers Club

Thanks, wankers unite!

Ughmaybenot · 16/05/2020 08:50

@PhilCornwall1 you broke easier than I thought Grin no judgement buddy, I absolutely loved my Audi. It was an extra wanky s-line Quattro, lowered a touch, all that shit. It flew like shit off a shovel... and ground out every single day on our lane... and the roads around home... it was beautifully impractical Grin

@alexiscarringtoncolbydexter we should get jackets ps fantastic username Grin

PhoneLock · 16/05/2020 08:53

Mine was given to me as a present. It is just a very short number. It doesn't spell anything, nor is it my name or initials. It be been moved from car to car and I do like the familiarity of it.

To be honest, I didn't realise that they caused so much angst.

PhoneLock · 16/05/2020 08:55

*It has been

PhilCornwall1 · 16/05/2020 09:01

It was an extra wanky s-line

Grinmine was an S-Line too. It was a quick motor and built like a brick outhouse. I'm Mr Pensioner now with a Vauxhall Insignia. Looks ok, but dodgy build quality.

sourcreamnchives · 16/05/2020 09:02

Highly naff

Sparklingbrook · 16/05/2020 09:05

If you get one as a present that must be horrible. You have no choice but to put it on.
Someone I know got one, it was sort of her name and a bit of her surname but not really.
Just odd.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 16/05/2020 09:22

You're on! Mine has to have enormous shoulder pads though.
In preparation for my next bitch fight with Krystal Grin
