Personalised car number plates - yay or nay?

Just that really.

DH is so keen.

I think it's tacky and a waste of money. I genuinely can't understand why you'd want your name (or some ridiculous incarnation) as your car reg, but maybe I'm a grumpy bitch.

Thoughts?

No real opinion. Have made a comment on a few that were funny, or ridiculous. I assume whoever has one is rather wealthy.
I can’t imagine having enough money to justify one, but if people want one it doesn’t bother me

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 15/05/2020 21:09

Don't most modern cars have the VIN on the windscreen. I didn't know this and when I moved country I checked the manual to make sure I could show the VIN to the testing centre for re-registration in the new country. When I got there the woman said "Oh, you don't need to open the bonnet, it's probably on the windscreen. Oh yes, here it is."

PhoneLock · 15/05/2020 21:09

My DH bought two on a whim after he came back from the pub one night. I was a bit Hmm.

Now I actually like them because they are very short.

I’ve got one. 🤷🏻‍♀️

StarsOnAMat · 15/05/2020 21:30

I have one on both cars in my household. They’re bog standard makes that you see thousands of on the road and I’m not an arsehole or a wanker. I just like having it on my car. The only downside is when my mother sees my car and knows I’m in Tesco so comes looking for me.

Ifonlyiweretaller · 15/05/2020 21:31

I've had mine for 20 years...not a majorly expensive one at the time (letter, 3 identical numbers, 3 letters that spell my name) and was bought with the car. I've transferred it to every car i've owned since. I love it.

Kittykatmacbill · 15/05/2020 21:33

Nope.

It’s a good way of indicating to the world you are a bad driver though. Always give personalised plates a tonne of room as I assume that will do something random.

MadisonAvenue · 15/05/2020 21:41

We have one but only people who know our first names and surname would know it’s a personalised plate.

ItsGoingTibiaK · 15/05/2020 21:44

For those saying they’re a bit ‘Del Boy’, I think you’ll find they’re actually ‘D31 80Y’.

(Tacky, pointless waste of money, IMO).

Chewbecca · 15/05/2020 21:45

Naff.

PenOrPencil · 15/05/2020 21:45

No. Unless you want/need to signpost to the world that you are a self-absorbed idiot with more money than sense.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 15/05/2020 21:46

if they are funny, or pertinent then fair enough but otherwise not for me

Neighbours..the entire family all drive about with their first initial and 3 letter business initials and dd's inlaws have "normal" plates with their names worked in.... Tommy and Maria ...TOM and MAR **

** names changed to protect the ignorant

eejits! the lot of them! :o

SausageSimon · 15/05/2020 21:46

I like them if they don't try spell something, mine are whatever at the start then my initials

SquirtleSquad · 15/05/2020 21:48

Sorry but I think they make the owner look like a massive..

Personalised car number plates - yay or nay?
Oldraver · 15/05/2020 21:49

I'm not keen on the contrived ones where you have to move the letters/number or squint to see what it's supposed to say

I have one on an old car that has my initials and nkickname

I bought OH one with his surname on..if you hae a five letter surname and dont need an I or O it's easy to do.

No one knows it a personal plate and OH loves it

Beamur · 15/05/2020 21:49

Nay.

Canyoutellilikrchocolate · 15/05/2020 21:50

Nay

Guiltypleasures001 · 15/05/2020 21:50

overnightangel · 15/05/2020 21:52

It’s like paying a lot of money for a really shit haircut

Sparklingbrook · 15/05/2020 21:52

Ooh we haven't had a personalised number plate thread for a while.

Not for me but my whole family have them Blush

Floralnomad · 15/05/2020 21:53

Nay , very tacky .

Oldraver · 15/05/2020 21:56

I did I've had 2 they never lost money

My plate is probably worth 100 times the car that's not hard though

DamnShesaSexyChick · 15/05/2020 21:57

I’ve got one, I love it tbh.

Pedallleur · 15/05/2020 22:14

No if you try to hard with illegal spacing or screw heads trying to make II into H. Yes if means something to you e.g. H15 (his) or/and is an investment. Someone I knew bought a v.expensive Porsche 911 years ago and it came with the plate A911 ONA When he sold that car on, that plate put money on the car as the next buyer wanted it.

StrawberryRaven · 15/05/2020 22:14

AWFUL. The very definition of ostentatiousness.

I think they are only acceptable on crap cars (an old lady locally drives an old polo with a 2 digit plate and I think her pretty cool as the plate must be worth far FAR more than the car), and on fun business plates that help make your dog grooming business or whatever more memorable.

I assume anyone else with one is a bit of a pretentious and insecure twat. They cost money, and you've basically paid money to say 'I've paid money to look like I have money, because everyone knows I paid money for this plate'.

Utterly frivolous purchase that serves no other purpose than impressing equally vacuous people.
