Personalised car number plates - yay or nay?

Just that really.

DH is so keen.

I think it's tacky and a waste of money. I genuinely can't understand why you'd want your name (or some ridiculous incarnation) as your car reg, but maybe I'm a grumpy bitch.

Thoughts?

Tacky

SimonJT · 15/05/2020 22:17

I have one, but I’m Asian so it’s a must 😂 it was a bit pricey, I’ve had it 9 years.

I've got one.
It was a gift.
I like it.
I try hard to to be a 'pretentious and insecure twat' or make preachy judgements based on a piece of plastic on someone's car.

I wouldn't buy it for myself, but it's no more ostentatious or frivelous than an expensive bag, watch, beauty treatment etc.

It's pricey to change every 3/4 years if you have a company car or lease though.

IndigoApple · 15/05/2020 22:21

Came onto this thread to say definitely not but I've just spent the past 20 min on a site putting in a few different combinations and how I sort of want one! Dangerous after a few gins!

PeterPomegranate · 15/05/2020 22:23

Nay. I’m sorry I find them very naff. Spend your money on something else.

PeterPomegranate · 15/05/2020 22:25

@simonjt Ha ha. I do see them a lot round here (large Indian diaspora)

Rhodri · 15/05/2020 22:28

I have one to conceal the age of my car. It’s not a twatty one that spells a word. It’s just an unreleased plate that doesn’t imply a specific year. So as long as my car looks tidy it isn’t obvious that it’s old.

Sparklingbrook · 15/05/2020 22:28

If I had a personalised plate that was worth lots of money I would sell it. Grin

lazylinguist · 15/05/2020 22:30

Nay. Tacky and pointless.

Bouledeneige · 15/05/2020 22:33

Just why? What a waste of money and so naff. No one I know round be seen dead with one.

Gulsink · 15/05/2020 23:24

No.........no. No.

overtly · 15/05/2020 23:33

Me, DH, FILs, MIL and my DPs all have one. Doesn't bother me that people find them tacky I find it really useful to have the same plate continuously.

AvoidingRealHumans · 15/05/2020 23:36

Why do people want to disguise the age of their car? Confused
People can easily check the year your car is from using your plate so a bit pointless really.
Are people that materialistic?

Waspnest · 15/05/2020 23:50

Yes I think some people see a new car as a status symbol (maybe not so much since the rise of readily available car finance or company cars). A lot of personalised plates don't give away the date of registration (I think).

Waspnest · 15/05/2020 23:52

If I had a personalised plate that was worth lots of money I would sell it. Me too but I think garages have cottoned on to that!

OutComeTheWolves · 15/05/2020 23:55

Dh works in an industry that's very shallow big on how you present yourself. He has one on his car because he feels turning up to a meeting in an obviously older car would negatively alter how people view him. We can't afford to keep changing our car every year so a personalised plate is a cheaper option.

Purpletigers · 15/05/2020 23:58

Definitely not !

newtb · 16/05/2020 00:06

Nay

The worst I saw was OBE1/1OBE on either a Bentley or Rolls near Altrincham.

And 1ACA

but the best was V6CUL - cul is arse in French

SimonJT · 16/05/2020 05:46

@AvoidingRealHumans At my old workplace if you were someone who would visit clients and travel by car it couldn’t be more than four years old. Lots of people got round this by buying an early version of a new model and sticking a personal plate on.

AvalancheKit · 16/05/2020 06:21

T4CKY

EventRider1 · 16/05/2020 06:35

Me and DH have matching ones.

I really couldn't care less about having a private plate on the cars but DH really wanted them so he bought them. If it makes him happy then 🤷🏼‍♀️

My only annoyance with them is I have to make sure I behave when driving and can't beep or flip anyone off for being an idiot as my plate makes my car very easy to pick out from the crowd 🤦🏼‍♀️ it doesn't always stop me though and I never hear the end of it from DH.

thecognoscenti · 16/05/2020 06:41

Pointless, tacky, vain. An excellent way of showing off the fact that you have money to waste on rubbish.

Movinghouseatlast · 16/05/2020 06:45

No, they are pointless. Unfortunately if I see someone with one I think they must be a bit of a twat.

PhilCornwall1 · 16/05/2020 07:05

We've got one on my wife's car, it was from when we only had one car and have had it for years, it just gets transferred. It was dirt cheap and don't even think about it.

Not got one on mine as it's a company car. If it was my own car I wouldn't bother.
