Malteaser cake recipe - help a Catholic out

Help on an Ecumenical matter please Grin So I've been dipping into the world of traybakes - I can make a pretty respectable caramel square (nice, thick, chewy caramel!) and Mars bar crispy square, but I need a good recipe for Malteaser cake.

I tried the BBC Good Food recipe the other day and it didn't have that lovely feeling of your pupils dilating with the sweetness of it all like a good traybake normally has. Am I doomed to never get it right because of my lack of Prod blood? Help! How can getting the right ratio of digestive biscuits, butter, syrup and chocolate be so hard?!

I'm normally a good baker! Honest!

Chef Kevin Dundon has a Supervalu video / does an ad on tv, showing how to make Malteaser tray bake - he makes it as a round cake.
Google it - Kevin Dundon Malteaser Cake

Can you have a round traybake?

LadyEloise · 10/05/2020 11:00

It might be a Catholic one .Grin
He does it in a rectangular tin too.

This is probably really outing, but here is a round traybake birthday cake I made for a 60th birthday last year. This served approx 80 people.

Bottom layer - malteser
2nd layer - mint aero
3rd layer - mars bar
Top layer - fifteen

Jellytots wow wee. Now that’s my kinda cake.
Do you take orders? 😬

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 10/05/2020 15:35

Wow JellyTots that looks amazing. How many of the guests slumped into a sugar coma? Grin

The Great Prod Bake Off

As a Southerner I would watch that . Doing my bit for cross community relations like.

I thought my mother was the only person who made cream cheese and grape sandwiches. I'm thrilled that someone else's mother did too, even if it did drive him off to live in England Wink

No ones mentioned Fahan's church recipes yet have they? It's the old paper pamphlets updated for the age of the internet www.fahanchurch.org/recepies.htm

I've been meaning to make chocolate tarmac for the kids for ages but haven't got around to it. I'm starving after this thread so might so check the cupboards Grin

Tommorrowsanewday · 10/05/2020 19:07

Flavia just when I thought my day couldn’t get any better you come along with your Fahan link. My eyes were like 👀.

Bosco who would you like to see accompanying me as judges on the TGPBO? 😬

Lunawuna · 10/05/2020 19:23

Wow Jellytots that’s peak Prod, good effort!

@Tommorrowsanewday well we’d need a celebrity prod. So I’m open to suggestions.

Actually, Bono is 60 today and his mother was CofI does he count?

eggandonion · 10/05/2020 19:36

I think we need a northern prod, I assume Lynda Bryan is one? Or big Jim McDonald off corrie looks like he'd appreciate a good feed?
Poor big Mervyn is no longer with us.

eggandonion · 10/05/2020 19:38

I suppose it is inappropriate to suggest Iris Robinson?

AngelaScandal · 10/05/2020 19:48

Julian from the UTV? We were very familiar with him. Iris would be an interesting choice alright...

JellyTotsGrewTooBig · 10/05/2020 19:58

Jimmy Nesbitt would be a class judge.

JellyTotsGrewTooBig · 10/05/2020 19:59

@Tommorrowsanewday I only take orders in my dreams! (Long held dreams actually, but unlikely to ever happen!)

#changing my name to PeakProd

Tommorrowsanewday · 10/05/2020 20:03

What about Graham Norton.
Big Jim, “here, al tell ye this, an al tell ye no more me oul mucker. Thon was a quare tasty boyo. So it was 😂😂😂
Bono’s got the job. As a fellow COIer I have to keep it in the family.
Colm Eastwood can be the Paul Holywood eye candy.

opinionatedfreak · 10/05/2020 20:04

West of Scotland upbringing here. The traybake thing had definitely crossed with the cars! My Mum made a really good tiffin, and I remember mint traybake/ malteaser tray bake etc. at birthday parties and other events.

However, i didn't have a fifteen until I was in my late twenties and a Norn Ireland colleague made them.

I've tried and failed to replicate.

Anyone want to share a recipe that works as none of the ones I've tried thus far has hit the mark.

The other thing that I've subsequently worked out is divisive is Top Hats - birthday party staple in Scotland/ NI but English friends report never seeing them before on the odd occasion I make them now.

eggandonion · 10/05/2020 20:06

Iris and Julian, but James Nesbit looks more like he'd eat savoury stuff? And celebrity chef types? I used to live in east Anglia, there was a tv chef called Patrick on the local news. He was slightly flamboyant, and sprinkled every dish with chopped parsley. He was from Ulster but suspect he might not have been protestant.

eggandonion · 10/05/2020 20:08

Dd1 has introduced top hats to her colleagues in Dublin, their minds are blown. Also a biscuit thing involving Oreos.

isabellerossignol · 10/05/2020 20:09

Pamela Ballantine could judge. She'd be eyeing up Colm Eastwood and making innuendos.

JasperRising · 10/05/2020 20:10

Ok, neither Protestant nor from Northern Ireland so I have to ask, who in earth came up with an apple and mars bar sandwich?? and why???

JellyTot's cake looks incredible - I've never seen such deep traybake!

BeatrixPottersAlterEgo · 10/05/2020 20:11

Barra Best would be a good judge, but he'd have to change his name to Barry and let on he was related to George

MillicentMartha · 10/05/2020 20:17

I thought 15s recipe was built in? 15 digestives, 15 marshmallows cut into 4, 15 glacé cherries cut up, slightly variable amount of condensed milk 150-200ml and 100g desiccated coconut?

MissisBee · 10/05/2020 20:47

RIP Big Mervyn.
I think Pam would be better as a presenter than a judge - I think she's the sort who would "watch her figure", so wouldn't want to eat too much.
