Woke up at stupid o'clock and started a mental rummage through my cupboards and fridge. Have got up now leaving DP (who's 150 miles from elderly family and a bit down) in bed, and decided to make a lemon/orange drizzle cake. Haven't got a loaf tin but got something in remotely the right shape. Also only have duck eggs (as they were the last ones left when I last went shopping.) I will post a pic when it's ready....hope it's edible, don't fancy slinging out a load of perfectly good ingredients!
Anyone else baking today?

Bread rolls again today - but omg - where is all the flour? There's a restriction on Ocado, has the whole nation started baking now, or are they hoarding flour for just in case?

onlyhereforthefood · 29/03/2020 13:44

I made peanut butter cookies today to drop off to a relative (well, to their doorstep!)

zowiewowie · 29/03/2020 14:12

I'm making cheese straws today. Comfort snack as my mom always made them and I miss being able to see her. Feeling FAR too frivolous with the use of the flour and butter !Blush

I made m & m cookies with two left over pouches of peanut and crispy m & ms. The best thing is this recipe uses bread flour instead of plain and you can literally throw in any add in instead of chocolate chips. They are chewy and so delicious:

Here is the link incase anybody is interested:

I will be making these again even when plain flour is available again as they are so yummy.

I made ( not baked ) chocolate mousse with a very soft avacado
( choc powder, splash milk ,vanilla and honey )
It’s delicious and great for fussy kids who won’t eat veg .

Jack Monroe's five minute flatbread (added cheese and toppings to make them into pizzas). Very speedy and yummy tea, no butter/eggs/oil required Smile

Mominatrix · 29/03/2020 20:14

Just made a batch of raspberry muesli muffins for breakfast tomorrow.

Banana bread
Soda bread
Carrot cake
And a soup...

All ready for the week. But just to add a disclaimer that I used to do this before the Coronavirus too!! I'm finding it increasingly annoying that ppl are buying all of the flour and yeast!! Hmm

ivykaty44 · 29/03/2020 21:30

Is there any flour in the supermarkets again?
I haven’t been for 12 days & there was little flour, pasta or loo roll

Yesterdayforgotten · 29/03/2020 21:41

Not plain but you may get a hold of bread flour or SR oh and coconut flour. Toilet rolls are okay now as I think most of the idiots who stock piled it havent needed it!

Yesterdayforgotten · 29/03/2020 21:43

ivykaty44 not the same selection as usual but you can get dried spaghetti, lasagne sheets and some fresh pasta and ravioli.

SinkGirl · 29/03/2020 22:30

Can you make bread successfully with plain flour? I have some as I bake often (cakes usually) but wasn’t sure whether there was enough gluten to make bread

Might finally get around to making my own starter, been meaning to for ages!

SinkGirl · 29/03/2020 22:32

Oh and I forgot to add the pic of my loaf. No idea what it’s like as I detest bananas but the boys are certainly happy with it!

You can make bread with plain flour. For brioche, I only use plain flour. It is also fine to do a pain de mie/Pullman loaf.

Bowerbird5 · 30/03/2020 00:19

I don’t think we should be making food for anyone outside our household.

We had apple crumble tonight. Still have some of the Barm Brack left.
Large Tesco had no plain flour. I have some left and two bags of SR flour just emptied into Tupperware. I have plenty of eggs thankfully as we live in the country. My hen isn’t laying yet. Need to get some more but not going out.

mooboy · 30/03/2020 03:20

The virus does not spread via food.

Yesterdayforgotten · 30/03/2020 09:20

'I don’t think we should be making food for anyone outside our household.'

Why? @Bowerbird5
If prepared hygenically and left on doorstep how is that any different from an online food delivery being dropped off?

drspouse · 30/03/2020 09:33

There is someone on another thread saying they would bin any bread a neighbour baked for them. How awful!

Mominatrix · 30/03/2020 09:35

@Bowerbird5, have a read of this.

Food is associated with zero reported cases of coronavirus.

Yesterdayforgotten · 30/03/2020 10:09

How awful and what a waste drspouse Shock

Yesterdayforgotten · 30/03/2020 10:10

Hopefully people will become more aware of what is safe and what isn't as there seems to be alot of confusion and misconceptions around this virus.

ivykaty44 · 30/03/2020 11:47

SinkGirl

Have a look for soda bread recipes, probably get away with plain flour.

I made savoury scones with out egg & half the recipe, as they don’t last more than a day. If you want I’ll share the recipe

Haveitheright · 30/03/2020 12:03

Chocolate cake yesterday- almost gone.
Cookies today- note the gap!
Now very low on butter and have no eggs left.

I've have had a friend deliver self raising flour & butter, so can make lemon and poppy seed tray bake. I follow the Mary berry recipe but halve the baking powder. it worked really well last time. I also have a lime so may put lime zest in to give a little zing. to busy today, so will bake tomorrow
